Strain controlled thermal regulator realized in two-dimensional black and blue phosphorene in-plane heterostructure

The reversible phase transition of two-dimensional material allotropes induced by strain engineering has promising applications in nanoelectromechanical systems and memories. Here, we report a series of black and blue phosphorene superlattice (BBPS) can be formed by reversible phase transition between them. The phase transition is with low-energy barrier and can be well regulated by strain engineering, until black phosphorene phase is fully transformed into blue phosphorene phase under strain of ε = 23%. At room temperature, BBPS exhibits a high phase transition rate of about 106 Hz, which enables reversible phase transition rapidly. Beyond, the unique in-plane heterostructure of BBPS suppresses phonon transmission, lowering thermal conductivity to only 25.6% of black phosphorene. Beyond, nonequilibrium Green's function calculations indicate the thermal conductivity crossing the black-blue phosphorene heterojunction suddenly drops to only 1/3 that of black phosphorene. Therefore, strain engineering can not only achieve reversible phase transition but also modulate the thermal conductivity in very large range, which is excellent in the field of heat flow manipulation and thermal management.

Practical security of twin-field quantum key distribution with optical phase-locked loop under wavelength-switching attack

The twin-field class quantum key distribution (TF-class QKD) has experimentally demonstrated the ability to surpass the fundamental rate-distance limit without requiring a quantum repeater, as a revolutional milestone. In TF-class QKD implementation, an optical phase-locked loop (OPLL) structure is commonly employed to generate a reference light with correlated phase, ensuring coherence of optical fields between Alice and Bob. In this configuration, the reference light, typically located in the untrusted station Charlie, solely provides wavelength reference for OPLL and does not participate in quantum-state encoding. However, the reference light may open a door for Eve to enter the source stations that are supposed to be well protected. Here, by identifying vulnerabilities of an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) in the OPLL scheme, we propose and demonstrate a wavelength-switching attack on a TF-class QKD system. This attack involves Eve deliberately manipulating the wavelength of the reference light to increase mean photon number of prepared quantum states, while maintaining stable interference between Alice and Bob as required by TF-class QKD protocols. The maximum observed increase in mean photon number is 8.7%, which has been theoretically proven to compromise the security of a TF-class QKD system. Moreover, we have shown that with well calibration of the modulators, the attack can be eliminated. Personalized Federated Learning on Heterogeneous and Long-Tailed Data via Expert Collaborative Learning

Personalized Federated Learning (PFL) aims to acquire customized models for each client without disclosing raw data by leveraging the collective knowledge of distributed clients. However, the data collected in real-world scenarios is likely to follow a long-tailed distribution. For example, in the medical domain, it is more common for the number of general health notes to be much larger than those specifically related to certain diseases. The presence of long-tailed data can significantly degrade the performance of PFL models. Additionally, due to the diverse environments in which each client operates, data heterogeneity is also a classic challenge in federated learning. In this paper, we explore the joint problem of global long-tailed distribution and data heterogeneity in PFL and propose a method called Expert Collaborative Learning (ECL) to tackle this problem. Specifically, each client has multiple experts, and each expert has a different training subset, which ensures that each class, especially the minority classes, receives sufficient training. Multiple experts collaborate synergistically to produce the final prediction output. Without special bells and whistles, the vanilla ECL outperforms other state-of-the-art PFL methods on several benchmark datasets under different degrees of data heterogeneity and long-tailed distribution. Linear programming is a key technique for analysis and verification of numerical properties in programs, neural networks, etc. In particular, in program analysis based on abstract interpretation, many numerical abstract domains (such as Template Constraint Matrix, constraint-only polyhedra, etc.) are designed on top of linear programming. However, most state-of-the-art linear programming solvers use floating-point arithmetic in their implementations, leading to an approximate result that may be unsound. On the other hand, the solvers implemented using exact arithmetic are too costly. To this end, this paper focuses on advancing rigorous linear programming techniques based on floating-point arithmetic for building sound and efficient program analysis. Particularly, as a supplement to existing techniques, we present a novel rigorous linear programming technique based on Fourier-Mozkin elimination. On this basis, we implement a tool, namely, RlpSolver, combining our technique with existing techniques to lift effectiveness of rigorous linear programming in the scene of analysis and verification. Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have significantly improved performance in natural language processing tasks. However, their ability to generalize to dynamic, unseen tasks, particularly in numerical reasoning, remains a challenge. Existing benchmarks mainly evaluate LLMs on problems with predefined optimal solutions, which may not align with real-world scenarios where clear answers are absent. To bridge this gap, we design the Agent Trading Arena, a virtual numerical game simulating complex economic systems through zero-sum games, where agents invest in stock portfolios. Our experiments reveal that LLMs, including GPT-4o, struggle with algebraic reasoning when dealing with plain-text stock data, often focusing on local details rather than global trends. In contrast, LLMs perform significantly better with geometric reasoning when presented with visual data, such as scatter plots or K-line charts, suggesting that visual representations enhance numerical reasoning. This capability is further improved by incorporating the reflection module, which aids in the analysis and interpretation of complex data. We validate our findings on NASDAQ STOCK dataset, where LLMs demonstrate stronger reasoning with visual data compared to text. The Stochastic Parallel Gradient Descent (SPGD) algorithm is a widely used model-free optimization algorithm in adaptive optical systems. However, when affected by noise, the SPGD algorithm may incorrectly estimate the gradient, resulting in a significant decrease in its performance and limitations in its application in complex environments. To address this issue, this paper introduces the optimal estimation algorithm and adds a self-checking process to the SPGD algorithm, proposing a Kal-SPGD algorithm. The feasibility of the Kal-SPGD algorithm is verified through simulation and experimentation. The experimental results show that compared with the standard SPGD, the use of the Kal-SPGD algorithm can reduce the signal amplitude variance by up to 92.15%. Ensuring safety through set invariance has proven to be a valuable method in various robotics and control applications. This paper introduces a comprehensive framework for the safe probabilistic invariance verification of both discrete- and continuous-time stochastic dynamical systems over an infinite time horizon. The objective is to ascertain the lower and upper bounds of liveness probabilities for a given safe set and set of initial states. The liveness probability signifies the likelihood of the system remaining within the safe set indefinitely, starting from a state in the initial set. To address this problem, we propose optimizations for verifying safe probabilistic invariance in discrete-time and continuous-time stochastic dynamical systems. These optimizations are constructed via either using the Doob’s nonnegative supermartingale inequality-based method or relaxing the equations described in [30,32], which can precisely characterize the probability of reaching a target set while avoiding unsafe states. The proteomics data analysis pipeline based on the shotgun method requires efficient data processing methods. The parallel algorithm of mass spectrometry database search faces the problems of rapidly expanding database size but low scalability. The heterogeneous database search algorithm based on deep learning is an effective way to solve this problem. Still, the deep learning-based distributed parallel database search algorithm is lacking. This paper analyzes the database searching computational load using a neural network and designs ReSLB, a workflow for the restricted search of mass spectrometry data based on GPU cluster and neural network scoring algorithm. This work aims to ensure the high scalability of future deep learning-based mass spectrometry distributed databases. In the performance estimation of 256 GPUs, the load imbalance of less than 30% and the parallel efficiency of 60% are achieved. Compared with state-of-the-art, the time cost is reduced by 75%, and the parallel efficiency from 1 to 256 GPUs is 3.6x higher than that. © 2022 IEEE.
