Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) has been applied to restore or maintain the muscle activity of paralyzed patients who suffer from spinal cord injuries and related neural impairments for several decades. In this paper, a portable and low-cost versatile stimulator for multichannel TES applications is described. The microcontroller-based programmable stimulator with four bipolar output channels send arbitrarily specified electrical pulses to the element in the electrode array for enabling the complex schemes of muscles. The amplitude and phase of each pulse in the stimulus sequence are independently variable, and the four channels are independently programmable, allowing a wide variety of stimulus patterns. We also designed an output circuit that can provide bi-phasic, voltage-regulated, charge-balanced outputs while avoiding the electrochemical erosion of electrode due to charge accumulation. The proposed stimulator has provided an opportunity for further study of a potential novel electrical stimulator with closed-loop stimulation paradigm suitable for a variety of FES applications, both for experimental and clinical studies.

The paper focuses on two mechanisms, multiscale relevance and visual saliency, in web image search. First, in most current web image search engines, such as Google image Search, Yahoo image Search and so on, people judge the relevance of search results by the thumbnails and then click through the thumbnails to check if the corresponding image is really relevant. Basically the thumbnail and the corresponding image give the multiscale representations of the image. The second is that from visual point of view, it is obvious that salient images would be easier to catch users' eyes and more likely to be clicked than cluttered ones in low-level vision. In this paper, we build a multiscale saliency model and apply it to re-rank the results from web image search engines. Experimental results show that the model can achieve an average precision (AP) [1] of as high as 97%, and it improves the results of Google image search significantly.

We present an unequal decoding power allocation (UDPA) approach for minimization of the receiver power consumption subject to a given quality of service (QoS), by exploiting data partitioning and turbo decoding. We assign unequal decoding power of forward error correction (FEC) to data partitions with different priority by jointly considering the source coding, channel coding and receiver power consumption. The proposed scheme is applied to H.264 video over additive white Gaussion noise (AWGN) channel, and achieves excellent tradeoff between video delivery quality and power consumption, and yields significant power saving compared with the conventional equal decoding power allocation (EDPA) approach in wireless video transmission.

This paper presents a novel dense disparity estimation method using phase matching and color segmentation. In the proposed method, the initial disparity map is firstly obtained by an improved phase-based stereo matching solution. The solution effectively restrains two tough problems of phase singularities and phase wrap, in a coarse-to-fine approach, by using Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DT CWT) to extract the phase of the stereo images. The initial disparity is then refined by color segmentation and disparity plane fitting. Segmentation-based methods have an advantage of well representation of disparities on discontinuous region. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is superior in generating disparity maps with high accuracy and clean edges.

Simple yet effective feature extraction is crucial for content- based image retrieval (CBIR). In this paper we propose a novel type of regional feature, which is called edge region color autocorrelogram (ERCAC). It aims to combine the color and shape characteristics of image jointly, by capturing both color distribution of image and spatial correlation of edge points with a structure-based early fusion. Hence, both color information and sketch information are encoded into a single representation. Experimental results show that our method has better performance on the task of TRECVID 2005 concept detection.
