Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive form of memory loss that worsens over time. Detecting it early, when memory issues are mild, is crucial for effective interventions. Recent advancements in computer technology, specifically Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs), have proven to be powerful tools for analyzing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data comprehensively. In this study, we developed a GCN framework for diagnosing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) by examining the functional connectivity (FC) derived from resting-state functional MRI (rfMRI) data. Our research systematically explored various types and processing methods of FC, evaluating their performance on the OASIS-3 dataset. The experimental results revealed several key findings. On the one hand, the proposed GCN exhibited significantly superior performance over both the baseline GCN and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) models, with statistically significant differences. It attained the highest average accuracy of 80.3% and a peak accuracy of 88.2%. On the other hand, the GCN frame work obtained using individual FCs showed overall slightly better performance than the one using global FCs. However, it is important to note that GCNs using global networks with appropriate connectivity can achieve comparable or even better performance than individual networks in certain cases. Finally, our results also indicate that the connectivity within specific brain regions, such as VIS, DMN, SMN, VAN, and FPC, may play a more significant role in GCN-based MRI classification for MCI diagnosis. These findings significantly contribute to the understanding of neurodegenerative disorders and offer valuable insights into the diverse ap plications of GCNs in brain analysis and disease detection. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Learning-based face hallucination methods have received much attention and progress in past few decades. Specially, position-patch based approaches have been proposed to replace the probabilistic graph-based or manifold learning-based ones. As opposed to the existing patch based methods, where the input image patch matrix is converted into vectors before combination coefficients calculation, in this paper, we propose to directly use the image matrix based regression model for combination coefficients computation to preserve the essential structural information of the input patch matrix. For each input low-resolution (LR) patch matrix, its combination coefficients over the training image patch matrices at the same position can be computed. Then the corresponding high-resolution (HR) patch matrix can be obtained with the LR training patches replaced by the corresponding HR ones. The nonlocal self-similarities are finally utilized to further improve the hallucination performance. Various experimental results on standard face databases indicate that our proposed method outperforms some state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of both visual quantity and objective metrics.

With the idea of divide and rule, there exist two different forms of semantic features flowing in the two stage instance segmentation paradigms. They are the global features at the image level and the instance features at the region-wise. The most significant distinction of the two macro-semantic morphological features lies in the different relevance of neighborhood features caused by background noise. Hence, we should consider different situations and make different schemes. Notice that the fields-of-view determines the range of local features that can be perceived in the convolution operation and implies the representation capability of the network. To this end, for FPN and Mask Head in two stage paradigms, we propose a more efficient methodology with Group-Inception and Asymmetric-Inception modules. This proposed methodology can act as a drop-in replacement to upgrade the plain convolution operation, which enables the network to look more via modeling long-range dependencies. Our method is simple yet effective. Quantitatively, we can significantly improve the state-of-the-art frameworks, including Mask R-CNN, Mask Scoring R-CNN, Cascade Mask R-CNN, and HTC by about 1.2%–2.2% AP on MS COCO test-dev yet with fewer parameters and FLOPs. Moreover, the proposed approach achieves competitive performances on the Scapes, KINS and SBD datasets. The source code of our method will be made available. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Multi-view learning improves the learning performance by utilizing multi-view data: data collected from multiple sources, or feature sets extracted from the same data source. This approach is suitable for primate brain state decoding using cortical neural signals. This is because the complementary components of simultaneously recorded neural signals, local field potentials (LFPs) and action potentials (spikes), can be treated as two views. In this paper, we extended broad learning system (BLS), a recently proposed wide neural network architecture, from single-view learning to multi-view learning, and validated its performance in monkey oculomotor decision decoding from medial frontal LFPs and spikes. We demonstrated that medial frontal LFPs and spikes in non-human primate do contain complementary information about the oculomotor decision, and that the proposed multi-view BLS is a more effective approach to classify the oculomotor decision, than several classical and state-of-the-art single-view and multi-view learning approaches. We design a distributed coordinated guiding vector field (CGVF) for a group of robots to achieve ordering-flexible motion coordination while maneuvering on a desired two-dimensional (2D) surface. The CGVF is characterized by three terms, i.e., a convergence term to drive the robots to converge to the desired surface, a propagation term to provide a traversing direction for maneuvering on the desired surface, and a coordinated term to achieve the surface motion coordination with an arbitrary ordering of the robotic group. By setting the surface parameters as additional virtual coordinates, the proposed approach eliminates potential singularity of the CGVF and enables both the global convergence to the desired surface and the maneuvering on the surface from all possible initial conditions. The ordering-flexible surface motion coordination is realized by each robot to share with its neighbors only two virtual coordinates, i.e. that of a given target and that of its own, which reduces the communication and computation cost in multi-robot surface navigation. Segmentation of colorectal cancerous regions from 3D Magnetic Resonance (MR) images is a crucial procedure for radiotherapy which conventionally requires accurate delineation of tumour boundaries at an expense of labor, time and reproducibility. While deep learning based methods serve good baselines in 3D image segmentation tasks, small applicable patch size limits effective receptive field and degrades segmentation performance. In addition, Regions of interest (RoIs) localization from large whole volume 3D images serves as a preceding operation that brings about multiple benefits in terms of speed, target completeness, reduction of false positives. Distinct from sliding window or non-joint localization-segmentation based models, we propose a novel multitask framework referred to as 3D RoI-aware U-Net (3D RU-Net), for RoI localization and in-region segmentation where the two tasks share one backbone encoder network. With the region proposals from the encoder, we crop multi-level RoI in-region features from the encoder to form a GPU memory-efficient decoder for detail-preserving segmentation and therefore enlarged applicable volume size and effective receptive field. To effectively train the model, we designed a Dice formulated loss function for the global-to-local multi-task learning procedure. Based on the efficiency gains demonstrated by the proposed method, we went on to ensemble models with different receptive fields to achieve even higher performance costing minor extra computational expensiveness. Extensive experiments were subsequently conducted on 64 cancerous cases with a four-fold cross-validation, and the results showed significant superiority in terms of accuracy and efficiency over conventional state-of-the art frameworks. In conclusion, the proposed method has a huge potential for extension to other 3D object segmentation tasks from medical images due to its inherent generalizability. The fault-tolerant consensus of linear singular multi-agent systems (SMASs) is studied in this paper. Firstly, a general dynamic adaptive event-triggered mechanism (ETM) is proposed, and its special cases include the existing dynamic ETM and static ETM. Then, based on this dynamic ETM, a new distributed dynamic adaptive event-triggered fault-tolerant controller (DAETFTC) is designed. Then the consensus problem is discussed for the linear SMASs via the proposed DAETFTC. Moreover, we establish novel sufficient conditions to ensure that all agents of the linear SMAS can reach consensus asymptotically. In addition, it is prove that Zeno behavior can be strictly excluded. Finally, the obtained results are simulated by a numerical example. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a joint gain and input design method for observer-based asymptotic active fault diagnosis, which is based on a newly-defined notion named the excluding degree of the origin from a zonotope. Using the excluding degree, a quantitative specification is obtained to characterize the performance of set-based robust fault diagnosis. Furthermore, a single gain design method and a joint gain and input design method are proposed, respectively. This is the first work to achieve a joint observer gain and input design for set-based active fault diagnosis. Compared with the existing methods that design gains and input separately, the proposed joint gain and input design method has advantages to exploit the fault diagnosis potential of observer-based schemes. Achieving high-precision measurements in a large field of view (FOV) is a challenging task. The accuracy of vision measurements is determined by the quality of camera calibration, which is influenced by the pose of the target. To obtain suitable target pose, a target pose optimization method based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) is proposed. Firstly, the target pose optimization problem is modelled as a Markov decision process (MDP). Secondly, a multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) algorithm for target pose optimization is designed by parameter sharing mechanism. Finally, optimization algorithm is adopted to camera calibration process. The calibration experiment was carried out under the large FOV of 4600 mm × 2300 mm. The results show that the back-projection error was 0.198 mm, the relative error of the diagonal length of target (505.847 mm) was 0.789 mm, and the success rate of large FOV camera calibration was 98.5%.
