Current protein nuclear localization assays encounter multiple challenges that underscore the constraints of conventional biochemical assays and sequence-based procedures. This paper highlights the emerging interest in utilizing artificial intelligence to surmount these limitations. Specifically, a supervised deep learning algorithm, employing the HTRNN model, is presented to identify mechanisms responsible for the nuclear location of proteins. This methodology embraces an entire data-driven end-to-end structure, making expert experience or previous biological knowledge unnecessary. By utilizing amino acid sequence features from both the head and tail regions, the algorithm displays remarkable detection and generalization capabilities, which have been validated by experimental results on present tagged nuclear location protein datasets. Overall, the data-driven algorithm plays a crucial role in enhancing the identification of protein nuclear localization properties.

RGB-thermal semantic segmentation is a potential solution for reliable semantic scene understanding under adverse weather and complex lighting conditions. However, past studies have primarily focused on the design of fusion paradigms. Unfortunately, these methods have not fully considered the modality differences caused by different imaging mechanisms, thereby reducing the performance of pixel-level semantic analysis. In response to this issue, this paper proposes an innovative Cross-Modality Comprehensive Feature Aggregation Network (CFANet). This method first designs a Cross-Modality Feature Rectification Module (CFRM) to align modality differences;then, it constructs a Global-Local Fusion Module (GLF) to sharpen object edges and refine the segmentation map. Results on two urban scene understanding datasets demonstrate that CFANet can effectively aggregate multi-layer deep features and outperform existing advanced deep learning methods in scene understanding performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Learning Second-Order Attentive Context for Efficient Correspondence Pruning

Correspondence pruning aims to search consistent correspondences (inliers) from a set of putative correspondences. It is challenging because of the disorganized spatial distribution of numerous outliers, especially when putative correspondences are largely dominated by outliers. It is more challenging to ensure effectiveness while maintaining efficiency. In this paper, we propose an effective and efficient method for correspondence pruning. Inspired by the success of attentive context in correspondence problems, we first extend the attentive context to the first-order attentive context and then introduce the idea of attention in attention (ANA) to model second-order attentive context for correspondence pruning. Compared with first-order attention that focuses on feature-consistent context, second-order attention dedicates to attention weights itself and provides an additional source to encode consistent context from the attention map. For efficiency, we derive two approximate formulations for the naive implementation of second-order attention to optimize the cubic complexity to linear complexity, such that second-order attention can be used with negligible computational overheads. We further implement our formulations in a second-order context layer and then incorporate the layer in an ANA block. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method is effective and efficient in pruning outliers, especially in high-outlier-ratio cases. Compared with the state-of-the-art correspondence pruning approach LMCNet, our method runs 14 times faster while maintaining a competitive accuracy. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia, and early diagnosis is crucial for delaying and treating AD. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), a widely used medical imaging technique, offers rich temporal and spatial data, which has led researchers to explore various feature extraction methods based on rs-fMRI images for AD identification. However, the related work still suffers from insufficient utilization of temporal and spatial information which leads to unsatisfactory early diagnosis. In this study, we propose a dual-branch fusion model to extract spatial-temporal features from rs-fMRI images. Our proposed model can extract temporal features at different levels. We developed a Class Activation Sequence (CAS) branch, which is a structure that emphasizes the function of each temporal node throughout the whole time series. Additionally, we created a time-domain local branch for local feature extraction. Further, we designed a fusion module for the model to describe temporal contextual relationships and fuse features at various levels. We tested the performance of the model on the ADNI dataset, and the experimental results show that compared with other algorithms, the dual-branch fusion model achieves higher classification accuracy on several classification tasks including early diagnosis, which proves the advantage of the dual-branch fusion model in temporal and spatial feature extraction for rs-fMRI images, and our work also provides a foundation for the temporal domain characterization of rs-fMRI images.

Multitask learning (MTL) is a promising field in machine learning owing to its capability to improve the generalization performance of all tasks by sharing knowledge among the related tasks. MTL has attracted a large amount of attention in the multitask-related community. In recent years, with the rapid development of distributed machine learning, MTL in a distributed environment becomes a hot research topic. Although MTL can reap great fruit in a distributed environment, the sensitive information, such as photos and voice recordings of the owner, in distributed data may be leaked during training. Consequently, in the distributed settings, one prominent challenge of MTL is to prevent the disclosure of sensitive private data. In this article, we propose a novel approach, federated multitask learning (FMTL), which applies federated learning to MTL in a distributed environment in order to protect the MTL model from being leaked and to better optimize the utility of the MTL model. In FMTL, all the participants independently train their local models on their own dataset in parallel and only transmit their model updates to the central server for aggregation at every epoch. As a result, their learning accuracy is enhanced beyond what is achieved only on their own training data. In this manner, it can achieve the best tradeoff between the utility and privacy: participants not only preserve the privacy of their own data, but also benefit from the models of other participants. The experimental results on annotated facial landmarks in the wild (AFLW) and annotated faces in the wild (AFW) benchmark datasets verify the effectiveness of our framework. © 2020 IEEE.

C2P-Net: Comprehensive Depth Map to Planar Depth Conversion for Room Layout Estimation

Room layout estimation seeks to infer the overall spatial configuration of indoor scenes using perspective or panoramic images. As the layout is determined by the dominant indoor planes, this problem inherently requires the reconstruction of these planes. Some studies reconstruct indoor planes from perspective images by learning pixel-level or instance-level plane parameters. However, directly learning these parameters has the problems of susceptibility to occlusions and position dependency. In this paper, we introduce the Comprehensive depth map to Planar depth (C2P) conversion, which reformulates planar depth reconstruction into the prediction of a comprehensive depth map and planar visibility confidence. Based on the parametric representation of planar depth we propose, the C2P conversion is applicable to both panoramic and perspective images. Accordingly, we present an effective framework for room layout estimation that jointly learns the comprehensive depth map and planar visibility confidence. Due to the differentiability of the C2P conversion, our network autonomously learns planar visibility confidence by constraining the estimated plane parameters and reconstructed planar depth map. We further propose a novel approach for 3D layout generation through sequential planar depth map integration. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method across all evaluated panoramic and perspective datasets. © 1979-2012 IEEE.

It is a positive trend for hemiplegia with wearable robots in rehabilitation training. Recently, wearable Supernumerary Robotic Limb (SRL) is rising to a hot spot. The difficulty in modeling SRL for hemiplegia is how to make the SRL mechanism match the human upper and lower limbs' size and function simultaneously. In this paper, a simplified model of a four Degree of Freedoms (DOFs) universal SRL (USRL) is introduced. Based on workspace similarity, which is evaluated by Jaccard Index (JI), we establish a multi-object optimization (MOO) model. By applying the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, we have found the optimal SRL mechanism parameters that meet the requirement of the human upper limb and the cane simultaneously. Meanwhile, a few impact factors are discussed briefly in the present proposal. The simulation results show that the USRL has a sound match with the human and could assist the hemiplegia subject as a supplemental limb. © 2021 IEEE.

In today’s ever-changing world, the ability of machine learning models to continually learn new data without forgetting previous knowledge is of utmost importance. However, in the scenario of few-shot class-incremental learning (FSCIL), where models have limited access to new instances, this task becomes even more challenging. Current methods use prototypes as a replacement for classifiers, where the cosine similarity of instances to these prototypes is used for prediction. However, we have identified that the embedding space created by using the relu activation function is incomplete and crowded for future classes. To address this issue, we propose the Expanding Hyperspherical Space (EHS) method for FSCIL. In EHS, we utilize an odd-symmetric activation function to ensure the completeness and symmetry of embedding space. Additionally, we specify a region for base classes and reserve space for unseen future classes, which increases the distance between class distributions. Pseudo instances are also used to enable the model to anticipate possible upcoming samples. During inference, we provide rectification to the confidence to prevent bias towards base classes. We conducted experiments on benchmark datasets such as CIFAR100 and miniimageNet, which demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Model-independent event-based consensus of multiple Euler-Lagrange systems with input disturbances

This paper investigates leaderless consensus (LLC) and leader-follower consensus (LFC) issues of multiple Euler-Lagrange systems (MELSs) with uncertain system parameters and input disturbances. Firstly, by utilizing event-based control strategy, event-based consensus protocols are proposed to achieve LLC and LFC, respectively. Then, to confirm that no Euler-Lagrange (EL) system will exhibit Zeno behavior under the above event-based consensus protocols, we show that the low bound of event-triggering interval is strictly positive for any time instants. Distinct with the existing related works, the proposed event-triggered consensus protocols only rely on local sampled state, and are irrelevant to the system parameters. Finally, some simulation examples are presented to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed event-based consensus algorithms. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
