The analysis of the carotid artery wall is of paramount importance in clinical practice. Especially, the intima-media thickness is a risk index for some of the most severe acute cerebrovascular pathologies, hence, an accurate segmentation of the different layers of the carotid artery is needed. IMT is usually manually measured on longitudinal B-mode ultrasound images. In the past ten years, many computer-based techniques for intima-media thickness measurement have been proposed to overcome the limits of manual segmentation, but almost all of them require a certain degree of user interaction. In this paper we proposed a novel approach for the completely user-independent segmentation of the common carotid artery wall. Our algorithm is designed for the extraction of the intima and media layers of the distal carotid wall in ultrasound images. It is based on integrated approach consisting of common carotid artery region identification, contour initialization with threshold segmentation, intima-lumen segmentation with Snake, and media-adventitia segmentation with GVF-Snake that enables the automated tracing of the carotid walls. The acoustic impedance's difference is employed to locate common carotid artery region. Finally, the characterization of the algorithm in terms of segmentation error was evaluated with a set of 40 common carotid artery ultrasound images and compared to the segmentation traced by a trained operator. Experiments showed that a mean error lower than 1.3 pixel both on the intima and media layers was obtained, which is comparable to that obtained by means of operator dependent techniques. © 2011 IEEE.

With the wide use of power conversion devices, harmonic currents are being injected into the power grid. Shunt Active Power Filters (SAPF) is a power electronic device to compensate the harmonic currents caused by nonlinear loads. As the foundation of the harmonics recognition and compensation, harmonic extraction techniques are becoming more and more important. This paper proposes a new harmonic extraction method based on the Echo State Networks (ESN). ESN is a new type of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), which has much faster training speed than other types of RNN. To evaluate the dynamic system modeling capability of the ESN, the ESN with different dynamic reservoir size are discussed. The performance of the ESN based harmonic extraction method is compared with traditional methods and method based on multilayer perceptron networks (MLP). The ESN algorithm is trained and tested in MATLAB. © 2011 IEEE.

Memristor has received significant attentions since Strukov et al released their invention on April 30, 2008 at Nature Letters. Based on the model of Strukov et al, analytic expression of the internal state is obtained by applying voltage to the device. By using the constant in the expression of the internal state, memory property of the memristor is explained. © 2011 IEEE.

Deblurring camera-based document image is an important task in digital document processing, since it can improve both the accuracy of optical character recognition systems and the visual quality of document images. Traditional deblurring algorithms have been proposed to work for natural-scene images. However the natural-scene images are not consistent with document images. In this paper, the distinct characteristics of document images are investigated. We propose a content-aware prior for document image deblurring. It is based on document image foreground segmentation. Besides, an upper-bound constraint combined with total variation based method is proposed to suppress the rings in the deblurred image. Comparing with the traditional general purpose deblurring methods, the proposed deblurring algorithm can produce more pleasing results on document images. Encouraging experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. © 2011 IEEE.

Traditional image matching algorithm based on gray correlation provides accurate results but it is time-consuming because of large amount of calculation. An improved gray correlation based image matching algorithm based on multi-core DSP is proposed to speed up the matching velocity with the acceptable margin of errors. With the development of portable embedded image processer, especially the multi-core DSPs for parallel computing to speed up the process, these image matching algorithms need to be transplanted to these embedded system. Experiments based on CPU in the form of Visual C++6.0 application program and multi-core Digital Signal Processor(DSP) verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, making it applicable to embedded image processing system with a multi-core DSP. © 2011 IEEE.

Stroke and heart attack, which could be led by a kind of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease named asatherosclerosis, would seriously cause human morbidity and mortality. And the carotid artery of intima-media thickness (IMT) is a key indicator to the disease. With the development of computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) technology, Ultrasound imaging, being real-time, economic, reliable, safe, and now seems to become a standard in vascular assessment methodology especially for the measurement of IMT. This review is an attempt to discuss the clinical relevance of measurements in clinical practice at first, and then followed by the challenges that one has to face when approaching the segmentation of ultrasound images. Secondly, the paper is presentation of common used methods for the IMT segmentation and measurement. An overview of summary and future perspectives is given in conlusion finally. © 2011 IEEE.

The capacity for walking is an important assessment to reflect the ability about how the patients who have movement disorders to control their lower limbs. Electroencephalography (EEG), which can describe brain activities, has been widely used in the field of neural engineering. The present study investigates 2D scalp topography mapping while the subjects perform gait-like movements with the assistance of a dynamic tilt table. Based on the result, we concluded that the motor function and the most nerve circuit of lower limbs in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients in level D are as normal as healthy human. © 2011 IEEE.

Speckle is a granular noise that inherently exists in all types of coherent imaging systems. This paper presents a quantitative study on five despeckling methods such as frost filter, kuan filter, speckle reducing an isotropic diffusion, homomorphic filter and wavelet filter. We select six objective evaluation parameters, such as signal-to-ratio, contrast signal-to-noise ratio, figure of merit, least absolute error, edge protection factor, signal-to-minimum mean square error ratio, to quantify the performance of these filters. The comparative study will provide some parameter comparative reference for selecting a suitable filter in the ultrasound image processing. © 2011 IEEE.

Heart rate (HR) signal analysis is widely used in the medicine and medical research area. Physical activities (PA) are commonly recognized to greatly affect the changes of heart rate. A method of Evolutionary Neural Network - Neuro-evolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) is used to build a PA-based HR predictor model. Through special coding, crossover and mutation operator, NEAT can implement network topology and connectivity weights evolution simultaneously. The common problem in evolutionary neural network, like competing conventions, how to protect the new innovation are effectively solved. The experimental results demonstrated the application potential of the approach. © 2011 IEEE.
