How to make full use of the limited energy available and prolonging the survival time of node is a major concern in research on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). This paper presented an improved approach based on Directed Diffusion Protocol (DDP) which could meet the features of WSN, such as data-oriented, many-to-one transmissions and low energy costs, together with data aggregation mechanisms which emphasized on cascading timeouts, to eliminate the redundancy caused by the transmission of large amounts of data. This modified protocol prohibited the direct forwarding of central nodes, balancing data traffic of different sensors between the source and the sink, and proved to be able of reducing total network flows, energy consumptions and prolonging the lifetime of the network through simulations.

It is significant to research the work safe and emergency management information system (PSEMIS) in large-scale hydroelectric project. This paper analyses the reviews and China Three Gorges Project Corporation work safety and emergency management status and business needs, proposes the overall framework of the system design. The basis of the work safety management system and emergency management system is the safety risk control and hazards classification standards. The paper discusses the safety risk control and hazards classification standards;analyses the main function modules of the work safety and emergency management application software systems respectively;and discusses the hazards risk assessment and identification standards, business model design, systems integration, digital contingency plans and other key technical problems. © 2009 IEEE.

M-elitist evolutionary algorithm and its application to V-BLAST system

A new algorithm named as M-elitist Evolutionary Algorithm (MEA) is presented with low complexity and high performance to approach the performance of Maximum-Likelihood(ML) detection, for solving the problem of the high complexity of ML detection in real-time Vertical- Bell laboratories LAyered Space-Time (V-BLAST) communication system. The simulation of one knapsack problem validates the effectiveness of MEA to solve combinatorial optimization problems. Furthermore, the simulation of V-BLAST communication system shows that the MEA-based detection algorithm can approach the performance of ML well, and is superior to the detection algorithm based on standard genetic algorithm and that based on clonal selection algorithm as well as some classical ones.

A new path planning method for UAV in static workspace is presented. The method can find a nearly optimal path in short time which satisfies the UAV kinematic constraints. The method makes use of the skeletons to construct the graph of the planning space considering the configuration of the obstacles and utilizes the graph to find a shortest collision-free path, and a novel technique is utilized to convert the free path into a feasible path. The method can be applied to different applications and easy to be implemented. Experimental results showed that the path planning can be done in a fraction of second on a contemporary workstation (2-3 seconds) under the condition of satisfying the kinematic constraints. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Intensive task-oriented repetitive physical therapies need be provided by individualized interaction between the patients and the rehabilitation specialists to improve hand motor performance for those survived from stroke and traumatic brain injury. The goal of this research is to develop a novel wearable device for robotic assisted hand repetitive therapy. We designed a pneumatic muscle (PM) driven therapeutic device that is wearable and provides assistive forces required for grasping and finger extension. The robot has two distinct degrees of freedom at the thumb and all other fingers. The embedded sensors can feedback position and force information for robot control and quantitative evaluation of task performance. It is potential of providing supplemental at-home therapy in addition to in the clinic treatment. To realize the trajectory tracking control, a fuzzy PID controller is designed for the proposed device. The experimental results show angle tracking control of the robotic hand using the fuzzy PID controller has better performance than that using a conventional PID controller.

Convolution is an important and useful operation in the fields of digital signal processing. In this paper, based on the previous work of performing discrete Fourier transform (DFT) via linear sums of discrete moments, we have made development to eliminate multiplications in discrete Fourier transforms by performing appropriate bit operations and shift operations in binary system, which can be implemented by integer additions of fixed points; then using the convolution theorem with the DFT, we compute the convolution with two DFTs, a point-by-point product, and an inverse DFT. Our algorithm involves fewer multiplications and can deal with arbitrary length signals.

M-elite coevolutionary algorithm for numerical optimization

The M-elite coevolutionary algorithm (MECA) is proposed for high-dimensional unconstrained numerical optimization problems based on the concept of coevolutionary algorithm and elitist strategy. In the MECA, the individuals with high fitness, called elite population, is considered to play dominant roles in the evolutionary process. The whole population is divided into two subpopulations which are elite population composed of M elites and common population including other individuals, and team members are selected to form M teams by M elites acting as the cores of the M teams (named as core elites) respectively. If the team member selected is another elite individual, it will exchange information with the core elite with the cooperating operation defined in the paper;If the team member is chosen from the common population, it will be led by the core elite with the leading operation. The cooperating and leading operation above are defined by different combinations of several crossover operators or mutation operators. The algorithm is proved to converge to the global optimization solution with probability one. Tests on 15 benchmark problems show that the algorithm can find the global optimal solution or near-optimal solution for most problems tested. Compared with three existing algorithms, MECA achieves an improved accuracy with the same number of function evaluations. Meanwhile, the runtime of MECA is less, even compared with the standard genetic algorithm with the same parameter setting. Moreover, the parameters of the MECA are analyzed in experiments and the results show that MECA is insensitive to parameters and easy to use. © by Institute of Software, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The study of the second order motion in biological vision is a new source of inspiration for algorithms and research directions in computer vision. In this paper, the second order motion can be divided into three typical group according to the modulation types: spatial modulate motion, temporal modulate motion and spatio-temporal modulate motion. Experiments are conducted on the first order motion perception based on correlation model and the second order motion perception by correlation model preceded with a nonlinear process called texture grabber. The computational results are consistent with the previous suggestion that the second order motions are processed by nonlinear system.

Discrete Hartley transform (DHT) is an important tool in digital signal processing. In this paper, based on our previous work of performing DHT via linear sums of discrete moments, we have made development to eliminate multiplications in discrete Hartley transforms by performing appropriate bit operations and shift in binary system, which can be implemented by integer additions of fixed points. An efficient and regular systolic array is designed to implement it, and the complexity analysis is also given. Different to other fast Hartley transforms, our algorithm can deal with arbitrary length signals and get high precision. The approach is also applicable to multi-dimensional DHT and DHT inverses.

Looking for small universal computing devices is a natural and well investigated topic in computer science. Recently, this topic was also investigated in the framework of spiking neural P systems. One of small universality results is that a small weakly universal extended spiking neural P system with 12 neurons was constructed. In this paper, a new way is introduced for simulating register machines by spiking neural P systems, where only one neuron is used for all instructions of register machine; in this way, we can use less neurons to construct universal spiking neural P system. Specifically, we give a smaller weakly universal spiking neural P system that uses extended rules and has only 9 neurons.
