In the past decades, stroke has become the worldwide common cause of death and disability. It is well known that ischemic stroke is mainly caused by carotid atherosclerosis. As an inexpensive, convenient and fast means of detection, ultrasound technology is applied widely in the prevention and treatment of carotid atherosclerosis. Recently, many studies have focused on how to quantitatively evaluate local arterial effects of medicine treatment for carotid diseases. So the evaluation method based on feature combination was proposed to detect potential changes in the carotid arteries after atorvastatin treatment. And the support vector machine (SVM) and 10-fold cross-validation protocol were utilized on a database of 5533 carotid ultrasound images of 38 patients (17 atorvastatin groups and 21 placebo groups) at baseline and after 3 months of the treatment. With combination optimization of many features (including morphological and texture features), the evaluation results of single feature and different combined features were compared. The experimental results showed that the performance of single feature is poor and the best feature combination have good recognition ability, with the accuracy 92.81%, sensitivity 80.95%, specificity 95.52%, positive predictive value 80.47%, negative predictive value 95.65%, Matthew's correlation coefficient 76.27%, and Youden's index 76.48%. And the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was also performed well with 0.9663 of the area under the ROC curve (AUC), which is better than all the features with 0.9423 of the AUC. Thus, it is proved that this novel method can reliably and accurately evaluate the effect of atorvastatin treatment. © 2016 SPIE.

We consider deep learning (DL) for event classification using electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements of brain activities. We proposed HDNN or hierarchical deep neural network, and CNN4EEG, a new convolution neural network (CNN). Both DL models are designed to improve the representation of spatial and local temporal correlations inherent in EEG data. These models were tested for image target prediction in a time-locked rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) experiment. The performances were compared with the state-of-the-art RSVP classification algorithms including HDCA and XDAWN and with other popular machine learning algorithms. The results show that global spatial local temporal CNN (CNN4EEG) achieved a 13% improvement over the best competing non-DL algorithm and a 9% improvement over canonical CNN for image processing, and a 6% over deep neural network (DNN). Our results suggest that the unique design of temporal and spatial filters in CNN4EEG can improve the representation of EEG data, hence the prediction performance. © 2018, Ubiquitous International. Constructing multi-modality and multi-classifier radiomics predictive models through reliable classifier fusion

Radiomics aims to extract and analyze large numbers of quantitative features from medical images and is highly promising in staging, diagnosing, and predicting outcomes of cancer treatments. Nevertheless, several challenges need to be addressed to construct an optimal radiomics predictive model. First, the predictive performance of the model may be reduced when features extracted from an individual imaging modality (e.g. PET, CT, MRI) are blindly combined into a single predictive model. Second, because many different types of classifiers are available to construct a predictive model, selecting an "optimal" classifier for a particular application is still challenging. In this work, we developed multi-modality and multi-classifier radiomics predictive models that address the aforementioned issues in currently available models. Specifically, a new reliable classifier fusion strategy was proposed to optimally combine output from different modalities and classifiers. In this strategy, modality-specific classifiers were first trained, and an analytic evidential reasoning (ER) rule was developed to fuse the output score from each modality to construct an optimal predictive model. One public datasets and two clinical case studies were performed to validate model performance. The experimental results indicated that the proposed ER rule based radiomics models outperformed the traditional models that rely on a single classifier or simply use combined features from different modalities. Immune particle swarm optimization of linear frequency modulation in acoustic communication

With the exploration of the ocean, underwater acoustic communication has attracted more and more attention in recent years. The underwater acoustic channel is considered to be one of the most complicated channels because it suffers from more serious multipath effect, fewer available bandwidths and quite complex noise. Since the signals experience a serious distortion after being transmitted through the underwater acoustic channel, the underwater acoustic communication experiences a high bit error rate （BER）. To solve this problem, carrier waveform inter- displacement （CWlD） modulation is proposed. It has been proved that CWlD modulation is an effective method to decrease BER. The linear frequency modulation （LFM） carrier-waves are used in CWlD modulation. The performance of the communication using CWID modulation is sensitive to the change of the frequency band of LFM carrier-waves. The immune particle swarm optimization （IPSO） is introduced to search for the optimal frequency band of the LFM carrier-waves, due to its excellent performance in solving complicated optimization problems. The multi-objective and multi- peak optimization nature of the IPSO gives a suitable description of the relationship between the upper band and the lower band of the LFM carrier-waves. Simulations verify the improved perfor- mance and effectiveness of the optimization method.

An assignment-driven multi-consensus problem of multi-agent systems with heterogeneous delays is investigated in this paper. By introducing a concept of intelligent adjustment factor, a distributed impulsive protocol is designed, in which only the delayed sampled relative positions to neighbors and the relative position to the last sampling state are utilized. Combined with the characteristic of impulsive control, three steps of model transformation are performed, and the assignment-driven multi-consensus problem of the original continuous-time system is converted to the stability problem of a discrete-time expanded analogous error system. A necessary and sufficient criterion is derived to guarantee the assignment-driven multi-consensus of the multi-agent system. An interesting simulation is proposed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical result and reveal the effect of intelligent adjustment factors on the assignment-driven multi-consensus.

Bone scintigraphy is widely used to diagnose bone diseases. Accurate hotspot segmentation is a critical task for tumor metastasis diagnosis. In this paper, we propose an interactive approach to detect and extract hotspots in thoracic region based on a new multiple instance learning (MIL) method called EM-MILBoost. We convert the segmentation problem to a multiple instance learning task by constructing positive and negative bags according to the input bounding box. In order to be robust against noisy input, we train a region-level hotspot classifier with EM-MILBoost and develop several segmentation strategies based on it. The experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms other methods and is robust against various noisy input.

Chimera states in spatiotemporal dynamical systems have been investigated in physical, chemical, and biological systems, and have been shown to be robust against random perturbations. How do chimera states achieve their robustness? We uncover a self-adaptation behavior by which, upon a spatially localized perturbation, the coherent component of the chimera state spontaneously drifts to an optimal location as far away from the perturbation as possible, exposing only its incoherent component to the perturbation to minimize the disturbance. A systematic numerical analysis of the evolution of the spatiotemporal pattern of the chimera state towards the optimal stable state reveals an exponential relaxation process independent of the spatial location of the perturbation, implying that its effects can be modeled as restoring and damping forces in a mechanical system and enabling the articulation of a phenomenological model. Not only is the model able to reproduce the numerical results, it can also predict the trajectory of drifting. Our finding is striking as it reveals that, inherently, chimera states possess a kind of "intelligence" in achieving robustness through self adaptation. The behavior can be exploited for controlled generation of chimera states with their coherent component placed in any desired spatial region of the system. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. The classical ant colony algorithm for vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW) has problems of low efficiency, slow convergence and prematurity. And the discrete ant colony optimization (DACO) is proposed for these problem. It adopts the one-dimensional discrete coding that can make the data structure simpler and bring in faster convergence speed. In addition, self-convergence mode is used to calculate the optimal vehicle number rather than setting the optimal vehicle number at the beginning, which makes the algorithm more flexible and accelerates the convergence speed effectively. The time window and vehicle load are not considered in the optimization process, when ants complete the whole process and then the path is explained, this move not only expands the ant search scope but also improves the efficiency of the algorithm. The above highlights make the most of the selfadaptation and self-regulating mechanism, which effectively reduces the probability of the local optimal solution at the same time. Experimental results for Solomon benchmark test problems indicate that DACO outperforms both in reducing time and space complexity in the premise of not affecting the accuracy. Based on the idea of 'q—count' of certain subwords of a word and generalizing the notion of Parikh matrix of a word, the notion of Parikh q—matrix of a word over an ordered alphabet was introduced. On the other hand, with a two-dimensional picture array of symbols arranged in rows and columns, two kinds of upper triangular matrices, known as row and column Parikh matrices have also been introduced and investigated. Here combining these two kinds of matrices of a picture array, we introduce row/column Parikh q—matrix of an array, leading to the concept of q—ambiguity of a picture array. Results relating to q—ambiguity of picture arrays are derived in the context of these Parikh q—matrices of arrays.
