We investigate the basin of attraction properties and its boundaries for chimera states in a circulant network of Hénon maps. It is known that coexisting basins of attraction lead to a hysteretic behaviour in the diagrams of the density of states as a function of a varying parameter. Chimera states, for which coherent and incoherent domains occur simultaneously, emerge as a consequence of the coexistence of basin of attractions for each state. Consequently, the distribution of chimera states can remain invariant by a parameter change, as well as it can suffer subtle changes when one of the basins ceases to exist. A similar phenomenon is observed when perturbations are applied in the initial conditions. By means of the uncertainty exponent, we characterise the basin boundaries between the coherent and chimera states, and between the incoherent and chimera states, respectively. This way, we show that the density of chimera states can be not only moderately sensitive but also highly sensitive to initial conditions. This chimera's dilemma is a consequence of the fractal and riddled nature of the basins boundaries. Coupled dynamical systems have been used to describe the behaviour of real complex systems, such as power grids, neuronal networks, economics, and chemical reactions. Furthermore, these systems can exhibit various kinds of interesting nonlinear dynamics, e.g. synchronisation, chaotic oscillations, and chimera states. The chimera state is a spatio-temporal pattern characterised by the coexistence of coherent and incoherent dynamics. It has been observed in a great variety of systems, ranging from theoretical and experimental arrays of oscillators, to in phenomena such as the unihemispheric sleep of cetaceans. We study the chimera state in a circulant network of Hénon maps, seeking to determine how the density of states in the network depends on the system parameters and the initial conditions. Consensus networks with time-delays over finite fields

In this paper, we investigate the consensus problem in networks with time-delays over finite fields. The delays are categorised into three cases: single constant delay, multiple constant delays, and time-varying bounded delays. For all cases, some sufficient and necessary conditions for consensus are derived. Furthermore, assuming that the communication graph is strongly connected, some of the obtained necessary conditions reveal that the conditions for consensus with time-delays over finite fields depend not only on the diagonal entries but also on the off-diagonal entries, something that is intrinsically distinct from the case over real numbers (where having at least one nonzero diagonal entry is a sufficient and necessary condition to guarantee consensus). In addition, it is shown that delayed networks cannot achieve consensus when the interaction graph is a tree if the corresponding delay-free networks cannot reach consensus, which is consistent with the result over real numbers. As for average consensus, we show that it can never be achieved for delayed networks over finite fields, although it indeed can be reached under several conditions for delay-free networks over finite fields. Finally, networks with time-varying delays are discussed and one sufficient condition for consensus is presented by graph-theoretic method. © 2015 Taylor & Francis.

A robust optical flow-based visual odometry method using a single onboard camera is proposed in this paper. To improve the quality of the noisy optical flows, a correction method across multiple frames is developed. Furthermore, the optical flows in the plane at infinity are detected and removed as these optical flows have very low signal to noise ratio for robot translation estimation. Finally, a RANSAC approach for robot ego-motion estimation is proposed. Physical experiments are carried out and the results show that the proposed method is able to estimate the camera trajectory robustly with reasonable accuracy.

This paper studies the aperiodic sampled-data control for the sliding-mode control (SMC) scheme of fuzzy systems with communication-induced delays via the event-triggered method. In practice, it is impossible to update control in continuous manner;thus, an event-based control technique has become popular with the advantage that the control task is executed only if it is triggered by an event. In this paper, the event-based sliding-mode control (ESMC) is designed for each linear subsystem of the global fuzzy model first. Then, the conditions for "fuzzily" amalgamated ESMC are discussed to stabilize the global fuzzy model. This ensures that the SMCis executed only when necessary. Furthermore, the results are extended to the fuzzy systems with communication-induced delays. Finally, case studies are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the derived results. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper presents new theoretical results on the multistability analysis of a class of recurrent neural networks with nonmonotonic activation functions and mixed time delays. Several sufficient conditions are derived for ascertaining the existence of 3n equilibrium points and the exponential stability of 2n equilibrium points via state space partition by using the geometrical properties of activation functions and algebraic properties of nonsingular M-matrix. Compared with existing results, the conditions herein are much more computable with one order less linear matrix inequalities. Furthermore, the attraction basins of these exponentially stable equilibrium points are estimated. It is revealed that the attraction basins of the 2n equilibrium points can be larger than their originally partitioned subspaces. Three numerical examples are elaborated with typical nonmonotonic activation functions to substantiate the efficacy and characteristics of the theoretical results. © 2015 IEEE.

Gene over-expression or under-expression is closely associated with human diseases, which contributes to phenotypic variations and diversity. To our best knowledge, there is no single open specific resource available to provide the association information between gene over- or under-expression and various diseases. In this study, we presented a comprehensive disease-associated over- and under-expressed gene database （OUGene） based on our proposed text mining pipeline and several open curated databases. It contains total 41,269 unique associa- tions between 7,238 over- or under-expressed genes and 1,480 diseases, which are supported by 81,974 evidence sentences from 56,442 articles. The OUGene is compre- hensive and covers most important therapeutic areas. Meanwhile a new scoring system is designed to rank the associations based on benchmarking against hand-curated data. OUGene provides an easy-of-use web interface for researchers to analyze these data and visualize the associ- ated networks, which can give insights to the complex relationships between over- and under-expressed genes and diseases at a system level. Human salience of pedestrians images is distinctive and has been shown importantly in person re-identification (or pedestrians identification) problem. Thus, how to obtain the salient area of pedestrian images is important for this salience based pedestrians identification problem. In this paper, we first show that this kind of salient area detection can be formulated as a kind of outlier detection problem, and then propose a novel unsupervised salience learning method using a local outlier-detection technique for person re-identification task. The main feature of the proposed salience computation method is that it exploits both distance and density information simultaneously. Experimental results on several datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed salience based person re-identification method. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Two types of novel cellular neural networks based on mem-elements are proposed, namely, MC-CNN and *** MC-CNN lets a memcapacitor replace the conventional linear capacitor of a cellular neural network cell. This improvement takes advantage of the nanoscale of memcapacitor and its natural nonlinearity, which makes the MC-CNN more compact and the output function simplified. Mathematical analysis of stability and simulation of image processing is presented to verify the feasibility and performance of MC-CNN. The EM-CNN is an economical improvement of the memristor synapse cellular neural network. In the EM-CNN, based on the symmetry of CNN templates, the amount of memristors and voltage-controlled current source is largely reduced. Thus, the EM-CNN is not only economical on the fabricating cost of CNN but also possesses a simpler cell structure which is beneficial to better implementation of CNN.

The operation of splicing on words was introduced by Tom Head while proposing a theoretical model of DNA recombination. Subsequent investigations on splicing on linear and circular strings of symbols have resulted in a number of theoretical properties. A different kind of splicing on two words, referred to as flat splicing, has been considered recently. This operation is extended to flat splicing on picture arrays, thus defining a new model of generation of digitized pictures, which is called as array flat splicing system (AFS). Results on the generative power of AFS in comparison with certain well-known picture array defining models and certain non-closure results are obtained.
