With the economic developments, high speed railway has been paid many attentions in China and medium- short term planning of Chinese high speed railway network has been formed and most of the railways have been started into operations. In this paper, graph theory and complex network theory are adopted to assess the reliability of Chinese high speed railway network. The topological characteristics and real distances between pairs of stations are discussed to investigate the reliability of Chinese high-speed rail network. Several parameters are presented to investigate the topological characteristics and the reliability and robustness of the network subject to failures. The parameter called unit degree betweenness is proposed to assess the transport capacity of lines connecting with the nodes. The largest degree node-based attacks and the highest betweenness node-based attacks are involved into Chinese high speed railway network to assess the topological reliability and robustness. The results show that the highest betweenness node-based attacks are more effective to destroy the network than the largest degree node-based attacks. Moreover, the cumulative degree distribution and the real mileages of railways between pairs of stations can be fitted by Gauss functions, and the distribution of real shortest distances over all pairs of stations of the network is fitted by a normal distribution function. By the simulations, the critical stations, Guangzhou Station, Zhengzhou Station and Jinan Station for the largest degree node-based attacks, and Wuhan Station, Xuzhou Station and Shijiazhuang Station for the highest betweenness node-based attacks, can be obtained in this paper. © 2011 IEEE.

A method based on multi-agents and ANN(Artificial Neural Network)was proposed to solve the pursuit-evasion task in continuous timevarying *** to this method,several autonomous agents with 8 circular sector sensors and an ANN controller were used to form a coordinated behavior to capture the *** evolve the controller,NEAT(Neuro Evolution of Augmenting Topologies)and PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization)method were used to optimize the *** simulation experiments show that both methods can successfully evolve the controller to capture the evaders,while NEAT requires less swarm members and consume less time comparing to PSO method.

Transient fault tolerance and system safety enhancement based on system theory

Transient faults are hard to be detected and located due to their unpredictable nature and short duration, and they are the dominant causations of system failures, which makes it necessary to consider transient fault-tolerant design in the development of modern safety-critical industrial system. In this paper an approach based on system theory is proposed to tolerate the transient faults in tunnel construction wireless monitoring and control systems (TCWMCS), in which the effects of transient faults are expressed by dysfunction of interactions among software applications. After analyzing the dysfunctional interactions of the system by the operational process model and educing the causes of dysfunction in the functional control diagram, a safety enhancement way is proposed for the designers, in which effictive safety constraints are set up to tolerate the transient faults. The experiment evaluation indicated that the effects of transient faults could be exposed by the causal factors of dysfunctional interactions and system safety could be enhanced by the enforcement of appropriate constraints. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Deblurring camera-based document image is an important task in digital document processing, since it can improve both the accuracy of optical character recognition systems and the visual quality of document images. Traditional deblurring algorithms have been proposed to work for natural-scene images. However the natural-scene images are not consistent with document images. In this paper, the distinct characteristics of document images are investigated. We propose a content-aware prior for document image deblurring. It is based on document image foreground segmentation. Besides, an upper-bound constraint combined with total variation based method is proposed to suppress the rings in the deblurred image. Comparing with the traditional general purpose deblurring methods, the proposed deblurring algorithm can produce more pleasing results on document images. Encouraging experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. © 2011 IEEE.

In formal language theory of two-dimensions, 2D picture grammars are powerful tools to generate picture languages. In this work, we incorporate the idea of membrane systems (also called P systems) into 2D picture grammars, thus introducing a new kind of picture language generating devices, named P systems with 2D picture grammars. Inspired by the structure and functioning of living cells, such a system has a hierarchical membrane structure, symbol array objects and evolution rules of 2D picture grammars. In each region delimited by the membrane structure, array objects can evolve in a parallel manner according to evolution rules present in the region, like the way biochemical objects evolve in living cells or organisms. The computational result of P system with 2D picture grammars is the set of pictures (rectangular arrays) present in a specific output membrane when the system halts. We obtain several comparison results, which show that with the membrane structure, the generating power of Siromoney matrix grammar, 2D context-free grammar and basic puzzle grammar can be enlarged.

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is an increasingly popular technique for data processing and analysis. For an incomplete data matrix, the weighted nonnegative matrix factorization (WNMF) is employed to decompose it. But the searching step size in WNMF is not optimal along the given searching direction. This paper studies the incomplete nonnegative matrix factorization (INMF) and proposes an accelerated algorithm. First, INMF is transformed into solving alternatively two nonnegative least squares (NNLS) problems. For each NNLS problem, the exact step size is chosen along the searching direction. Then, the complexity of NNLS problems is analyzed. Finally, experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms WNMF.

This paper proposes a improved non-local means (NLM) filter for image denoising. Due to the drawback that the similarity is computed based on the noisy image, the traditional NLM method easily generates the artifacts in case of high-level noise. The proposed method first preprocesses the noisy image by Gaussian filter. Then, a moving window at each pixel of the noisy image is chosen as the search window, and meanwhile, a improved calculation method of spatial distance based on the preprocessed image is used for computing the similarity. Finally, combining the improved distance with search window based on the noisy image, the intensity of each pixel is restored as the traditional NLM method. The standard images are used to evaluate restoration performance of the proposed method. Additionally, the application on medical image denoising also demonstrates that our method is practical.

A low-cost device using acoustic method for measuring open-end tube length is developed. The proposed device is aimed to get the length of the tubes which are piled up together, and only one end of which is available in the warehouse or dumping areas. The device contains the emitting and receiving probes to echo the sound pulse and receive the reflection sound wave, and has been developed with discrete component circuits whose key part is the logical control circuit based on ARM. Experiments are performed in the open tubes with the lengths between 0.85 m to 6 m. The measurement error is below 0.5 cm. For the tubes blocked by the cement or earth, the device can detect the location of obstruction automatically. Based on the acoustic method, experiments are also conducted in the blocked tubes based on Matlab software, and the analysis of the reflection wave is given.

The analysis of the carotid artery wall is of paramount importance in clinical practice. Especially, the intima-media thickness is a risk index for some of the most severe acute cerebrovascular pathologies, hence, an accurate segmentation of the different layers of the carotid artery is needed. IMT is usually manually measured on longitudinal B-mode ultrasound images. In the past ten years, many computer-based techniques for intima-media thickness measurement have been proposed to overcome the limits of manual segmentation, but almost all of them require a certain degree of user interaction. In this paper we proposed a novel approach for the completely user-independent segmentation of the common carotid artery wall. Our algorithm is designed for the extraction of the intima and media layers of the distal carotid wall in ultrasound images. It is based on integrated approach consisting of common carotid artery region identification, contour initialization with threshold segmentation, intima-lumen segmentation with Snake, and media-adventitia segmentation with GVF-Snake that enables the automated tracing of the carotid walls. The acoustic impedance's difference is employed to locate common carotid artery region. Finally, the characterization of the algorithm in terms of segmentation error was evaluated with a set of 40 common carotid artery ultrasound images and compared to the segmentation traced by a trained operator. Experiments showed that a mean error lower than 1.3 pixel both on the intima and media layers was obtained, which is comparable to that obtained by means of operator dependent techniques. © 2011 IEEE.

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) has been applied to restore or maintain the muscle activity of paralyzed patients who suffer from spinal cord injuries and related neural impairments for several decades. In this paper, a portable and low-cost versatile stimulator for multichannel TES applications is described. The microcontroller-based programmable stimulator with four bipolar output channels send arbitrarily specified electrical pulses to the element in the electrode array for enabling the complex schemes of muscles. The amplitude and phase of each pulse in the stimulus sequence are independently variable, and the four channels are independently programmable, allowing a wide variety of stimulus patterns. We also designed an output circuit that can provide bi-phasic, voltage-regulated, charge-balanced outputs while avoiding the electrochemical erosion of electrode due to charge accumulation. The proposed stimulator has provided an opportunity for further study of a potential novel electrical stimulator with closed-loop stimulation paradigm suitable for a variety of FES applications, both for experimental and clinical studies. © 2011 IEEE.
