A brain-computer interface (BCI) enables direct communication between the human brain and external devices. Electroencephalography (EEG) based BCIs are currently the most popular for able-bodied users. To increase user-friendliness, usually a small amount of user-specific EEG data are used for calibration, which may not be enough to develop a pure data-driven decoding model. To cope with this typical calibration data shortage challenge in EEG-based BCIs, this paper proposes a parameter-free channel reflection (CR) data augmentation approach that incorporates prior knowledge on the channel distributions of different BCI paradigms in data augmentation. Experiments on eight public EEG datasets across four different BCI paradigms (motor imagery, steady-state visual evoked potential, P300, and seizure classifications) using different decoding algorithms demonstrated that: 1) CR is effective, i.e., it can noticeably improve the classification accuracy;2) CR is robust, i.e., it consistently outperforms other data augmentation approaches in the literature;and, 3) CR is flexible, i.e., it can be combined with other data augmentation approaches to further increase the performance. We suggest that data augmentation approaches like CR should be an essential step in EEG-based BCIs. Our code is available online. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A novel Parallel-Based Lifting Algorithm （PBLA） for Discrete Wavelet Transform （DWT）, exploiting the parallelism of arithmetic operations in all lifting steps, is proposed in this paper. It leads to reduce the critical path latency of computation, and to reduce the complexity of hardware implementation as well. The detailed derivation on the proposed algorithm, as well as the resulting Very Large Scale Integration （VLSI） architecture, is introduced, taking the 9/7 DWT as an example but without loss of generality. In comparison with the Conventional Lifting Algorithm Based Implementation （CLABI）, the critical path latency of the proposed architecture is reduced by more than half from （4Tm ＋ 8Ta）to Tm ＋ 4Ta, and is competitive to that of Convolution-Based Implementation （CBI）, but the new implementation will save significantly in hardware. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture has good performance in both increasing working frequency and reducing area.

In this paper, neural networks based on linearly translated features (LTFs) are presented. LTFs including uniform, non-uniform, and multiple translation vectors are embedded into feedforward neural networks. Learning algorithms are presented for the neural networks. Learning capabilities of the neural networks are analyzed. Experimental results on approximation' identification, and evaluation problems are reported to substantiate the efficacy of the neural networks and learning algorithms.

intelligent industrial manufacturing heavily relies on structured knowledge. Named Entity Recognition (NER), an essential technique for extracting structured knowledge from text, has garnered significant research interest. However, current NER approaches face difficulties in handling multiple levels of entity nesting in knowledge extraction, especially within the manufacturing context. To address this issue, we present an Anchor Span-based NER (ASNER) approach for accurately and efficiently extracting manufacturing text knowledge. This method combines token and span classification. Initially, the head and tail features of the entity are extracted, with the corresponding anchor span of potential entities generated based on a boundary match neural network to localize the entities. Subsequently, token spatial contextual features are extracted using biaffine attention and convolutional neural networks, and classification categories are assigned to the anchor span-filtered entity features. Experimental studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ASNER approach. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we investigate the split equality problems in Hilbert spaces. We propose an iterative algorithm with self-adaptive step-size for solving split equality prob-lems. Influence maximization refers to selecting a group of nodes from a social network, which obtains the largest influence spread under a cascade model. However, most of the existing works only focused on the influence and ignored the diversity of influenced crowd. Thus, scholars have raised the issue of diversified social influence maximization recently, using the category information of nodes to design diversity indicator and introducing a trade-off parameter to balance the two objectives influence and diversity as one single objective for optimization. In fact, the category information of nodes in the network is usually difficult to be collected, thus the definition of diversity based on nodes' categories is not very general and accurate. In addition, it is very difficult to set the trade-off parameter, especially when there is no prior knowledge in real applications. To this end, we employ overlapping community structure information to design the diversity of nodes without any node's additional (e.g. category) information. Due to the two objectives of influence and diversity may be conflicting, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm named MOEA-DIM is proposed to optimize the two objectives simultaneously, which does not need to set the tradeoff parameter between the two objectives. In MOEA-DIM, a network reduction strategy based on overlapping community structure is suggested to greatly reduce the search space. In addition, a population initialization strategy based on random walk is designed to accelerate the convergence of the algorithm. Experiments on six real-world datasets show that the proposed algorithm MOEA-DIM has promising performance in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency.

PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a type of small non-coding RNAs which bind with the PIWI proteins to exert biological effects in various regulatory mechanisms. A growing amount of evidence reveals that exosomal piRNAs are potential biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases. Effective methods for the prediction of exosomal piRNAs are the foundation of piRNA functional research. In this study, we propose an end-to-end deep network for identifying exosomal piRNAs based on features learned from natural language processing (NLP) models for sequence embedding with attention mechanism. First, a benchmark dataset is constructed by processing piRNA subcellular localization annotated data and sequence data. Moreover, bagging positive unlabeled learning is applied to get the reliable negative set. Finally, we treat a piRNA sequence as a sentence and its k-mer subsequence as a token. Sequence embedding models with self-attention mechanism is designed to extract features from exosome piRNA sequences, which are used for the prediction task. Compared with three competing methods, our model achieves the best performance and reveals the key factors of exosomal piRNA sequences by the attention mechanism. Our model characterizes exosomal piRNAs and could be beneficial for researchers to investigate exosomal piRNAs’ functions.

Redundancy makes soft manipulators manage to complete a variety of tasks in complex environments. However, a pseudo-inverse kinematics controller for redundant soft manipulators simply maximizes the manipulability while ignoring some material constraints, e.g., actuation saturation and control noise. As manipulability is the indicator for the dexterity of motion in all directions of the redundant soft manipulators, this work proposes an optimization based controller, where the manipulability and robustness are optimized for a cable-driven redundant soft manipulator to adapt actuation saturation and control noise. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

In this paper, we revisit the problem of enlarging the domain of attraction for linear systems with asymmetric actuator saturation. We partition the state space into several regions according to the sign of each input and rewrite the linear system subject to asymmetric actuator saturation as an equivalent switched system, each subsystem of which is associated with one partition of the state space and is a linear system subject to symmetric actuator saturation. Based on this equivalent representation of the system, we present a Lyapunov function, which is composed of a set of quadratic functions associated with matrices that are not required to be positive definite. We establish sufficient conditions for regional stability and, based on them, formulate optimization problems to enlarge the estimate of the domain of attraction. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In clinical problems, numerous factors are usually involved in a medical syndrome. New advances in medicine provide a broad range of diagnosis methods to cover all aspects of a disease. However, huge amounts of raw information may confuse clinicians and decrease decision accuracy. Computerized knowledge extraction is an active area of research in medical informatics. This paper suggests a new medical data mining approach using an advanced swarm intelligence data mining algorithm. Considering medical knowledge discovery difficulties, this approach addresses common issues such as missing value management and interactive rule extraction. Here, surgery candidate selection in temporal lobe epilepsy is the main target application. However, the general idea can be applied to other medical knowledge discovery problems. Experimental results show noticeable performance improvement in the final rule-set quality while the method is flexible and fast.
