This paper proposes a novel system for generating 1-D m-scroll, 2-D m×n-grid multi-scroll, 3-D m×n×l-grid multi-scroll chaotic attractors (GMSCAs) via switching piecewise linear (PWL) function. First, a third-order linear system satisfying certain conditions is introduced as the original system. Then, by adding stair function, saturated function series and hysteresis function series to the third-order linear system, respectively, GMSCAs are generated along a certain line, or plane, or in the whole state space. Besides, some basic dynamical behaviors of the controlled system are investigated and numerical simulations are given to verify the effectiveness of this method.

Spiking neural P systems with anti-spikes （ASN P systems） are variant forms of spiking neural P systems, which are inspired by inhibitory impulses/spikes or inhibitory synapses. The typical feature of ASN P systems is when a neuron contains both spikes and anti-spikes, spikes and anti-spikes wil immediately annihilate each other in a maximal way. In this paper, a restricted variant of ASN P systems, cal ed ASN P systems without anni-hilating priority, is considered, where the annihilating rule is used as the standard rule, i.e., it is not obligatory to use in the neuron associated with both spikes and anti-spikes. If the annihilating rule is used in a neuron, the annihilation wil consume one time unit. As a result, such systems using two categories of spiking rules （identified by （a, a） and （a,a^-）） can achieve Turing completeness as number accepting devices.

An efficient MRF embedded level set method for image segmentation

This paper presents a fast and robust level set method for image segmentation. To enhance the robustness against noise, we embed a Markov random field (MRF) energy function to the conventional level set energy function. This MRF energy function builds the correlation of a pixel with its neighbors and encourages them to fall into the same region. To obtain a fast implementation of the MRF embedded level set model, we explore algebraic multigrid (AMG) and sparse field method (SFM) to increase the time step and decrease the computation domain, respectively. Both AMG and SFM can be conducted in a parallel fashion, which facilitates the processing of our method for big image databases. By comparing the proposed fast and robust level set method with the standard level set method and its popular variants on noisy synthetic images, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, medical images, and natural images, we comprehensively demonstrate the new method is robust against various kinds of noises. In particular, the new level set method can segment an image of size 500 x 500 within 3 s on MATLAB R2010b installed in a computer with 3.30-GHz CPU and 4-GB memory. © 2014 IEEE.

In this paper, quantitative analysis was implemented to reveal the mechanism of temperature distributions inside cross-flow stack. For this purpose, a differential model of planar cross-flow SOFC stack was built. The effectiveness of this model on describing temperature distributions were full validated by experiments on single cell and a 40-cell stack. Then, the quantitative analysis was given from two aspects, namely heat produced by reactions and heat transmission between gases and solid layer. Particularly, we rigorously revealed the non-intuitive phenomenon that the fuel temperatures were decreasing inside SOFC stack along the fuel flow direction. Moreover, the research idea and the analytical method proposed in this paper also apply to co-flow and counter-flow SOFC.

The rapid progress in the research and development of electronics, sensing, signal processing, and communication networks has significantly advanced the state of applications of intelligent transportation systems(ITS). However, efficient and low-cost methods for gathering information in large-scale roads are lacking. Consequently, wireless sensor network(WSN) technologies that are low cost, low power, and self-configuring are a key function in ITS. The current state of the art of application scenarios of WSNs for urban transportation is captured in this paper, where solutions are discussed under their related application schemes. This paper also points out the potential application scenarios and design requirements of WSN for urban transportation.

A human motion intent estimation algorithm based on laser ranger finder and force sensors is designed for a walking-aid robot. By applying the proposed algorithm to the robot, the user can operate the walking-aid robot more fluently, comfortably and safely. A walking-aid or rehabilitation robot normally estimates the user's motion intention by measuring the interactive forces between human and robot. Whereas, the human motion should be represented as a coordination between the arms and the legs movements. This study therefore proposes a human motion intent estimation algorithm by fusing the motion intentions detected by the force sensors and the laser ranger finder, which are used to monitor the movements of arms and legs respectively. A special arrangement of push-pull force sensors is implemented for estimating the human motion intention I from user's operations on the handles. Meanwhile the human motion intention II is extracted by a laser ranger finder observing the user's movement of legs. A multi-sensor fusion algorithm is employed to fuse these two estimates. Experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed human motion intent estimation algorithm.

A large electrolytic capacitor is always used to make dc-link voltage stable in a single-phase to three-phase power converter. However, the large electrolytic capacitor occupies a large volume and has a short lifetime as to the home appliances. And additional PFC circuit is needed to correct the grid current. In order to settle these issues, a converter without electrolytic capacitor is studied in this paper. The q-axis current reference is modified for the high grid power factor operation. And the d-axis current reference is generated to achieve the flux-weakening control and to improve the waveform of the output currents and. Proportional-resonant controllers are adopted to obtain the better current performance. The simulation results verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed method.

In the coming aging society, it is extremely important to develop devices, which can support and aid the elderly in their daily life. In this paper a multi-sensor based human motion intention recognition algorithm is proposed for walking-aid robot. The mechanism of walking-aid robot was first introduced. Then human intent motion was estimated by force sensors and LRF respectively. A new concept called intentional motion (IM) is proposed to quantitatively describe this moving intention and then estimated by conventional Kalman filter. Based on the two human intent motions estimated by force sensors and LRF, IM can be online inferred by applying Kalman filter method. Finally, the validity of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by the experiments. The experimental results show that the user feels more natural and comfortable when our multi-sensor based human motion intention recognition algorithm is applied.

In this study we modified the local binary pattern operator (LBP) to obtain the robust invariant texture patterns for image texture classification. The modified method will be able to calculate patterns which are invariant for translation, scaling, rotation and reflection. Therefore, the modified LBP is called R-LBP. Although many variation of LBP have been proposed, most of them cannot detect and recognize the patterns of reflection. Both clockwise and counter clockwise coding is used in the proposed R-LBP operator in order to derive a minimum code to representing the pattern. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective in determining the invariant patterns for image texture classification. © 2015 ACM.

Traditional computer portrait caricature system mainly take the method that exaggerate and deform real images directly, that lead the facial image background also been deformed when exaggerate facial image. If in pretreatment stage, we segmented the characters and background of the input image, and then do the subsequent processing, the problem may be solved. But for better portrait caricature effects, we need an excellent segmentation algorithm. So, we propose an improved Grabcut image segmentation algorithm and use it to extract the prospect character image for exaggeration and deformation. In practical application, we separate deform and exaggerate the foreground characters image with TPS method, then fuse it with the original or new background picture, get the final image. Application proves, the method solves the background deformation problem well, and improves the quality and rate of image segmentation, caricature synthesis effect reality and natural. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
