Fuzzy c-means based clustering algorithms are frequently used for Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy classifier antecedent parameter estimation. One rule is initialized from each cluster. However, most of these clustering algorithms are unsupervised, which waste valuable label information in the training data. This paper proposes a supervised enhanced soft subspace clustering (SESSC) algorithm, which considers simultaneously the within-cluster compactness, between-cluster separation, and label information in clustering. It can effectively deal with high-dimensional data, be used as a classifier alone, or be integrated into a TSK fuzzy classifier to further improve its performance. Experiments on nine UCI datasets from various application domains demonstrated that SESSC based initialization outperformed other clustering approaches, especially when the number of rules is small. Mem Brain: An Easy-to-Use Online Webserver for Transmembrane Protein Structure Prediction

Membrane proteins are an important kind of proteins embedded in the membranes of cells and play crucial roles in living organisms, such as ion channels,transporters, receptors. Because it is difficult to determinate the membrane protein's structure by wet-lab experiments,accurate and fast amino acid sequence-based computational methods are highly desired. In this paper, we report an online prediction tool called Mem Brain, whose input is the amino acid sequence. Mem Brain consists of specialized modules for predicting transmembrane helices, residue–residue contacts and relative accessible surface area of a-helical membrane proteins. Mem Brain achieves aprediction accuracy of 97.9% of ATMH, 87.1% of AP,3.2 ± 3.0 of N-score, 3.1 ± 2.8 of C-score. Mem BrainContact obtains 62%/64.1% prediction accuracy on training and independent dataset on top L/5 contact prediction,respectively. And Mem Brain-Rasa achieves Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.733 and its mean absolute error of13.593. Curves generated by traditional evaluating functions contain large amount of local extremums, easily leading to focal-plane misjudgments. We propose a new clarity evaluation method based on spectral radius. The spatial information is converted into frequency domain by Discrete Cosine Transformation, then a sector that contains more than 99 percent of the total spectrum energy is extracted, and the radius of this sector is employed to estimate the degree of clarity of current image. Since the scope of spectral radius is steady and limited to image size, it provides effective reference for selection of lower limit of spectral radius which is utilized to avoid local fluctuation and maintain the unimodality of evaluation curves. The experimental results demonstrate that the spectral radius based evaluation method forms curves with fewer local extremums and better robustness.

Abnormal resting-state EEG power and impaired inhibition control in young smokers

Exposure to nicotine during adolescence may cause neurophysiological changes and increase the risks of developing nicotine dependence;it can even lead to lifelong smoking. The intake of nicotine may also lead to abnormal patterns of oscillatory brain activity and inhibition control deficits. However, little is known about the specific relationship between oscillatory brain activity during the resting state and inhibition control capacity in young smokers. In the present study, we acquired resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) data from thirty-four young smokers and 39 age-matched non-smoking controls. Inhibition control performance was measured by a Go/NoGo task. Compared with non-smoking controls, we detected reduced low-frequency delta band activity in the frontal, central and posterior cortices of young smokers. Furthermore, young smokers committed more errors in response to infrequent NoGo trials. Notably, we demonstrated that delta absolute power in the frontal region was negatively correlated with NoGo errors and that alpha power in the central region was positively correlated with NoGo errors in non-smoking controls but not in young smokers. These findings may suggest that these inhibitory control processes were associated with alterations in oscillatory brain activity during the resting state. Our findings suggest that alterations of power spectra in delta bands may act as a useful biomarker of inhibitory control performance and provide a scientific basis for the diagnosis and treatment of nicotine addiction in adolescents. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

The fault detection task in lithium-ion battery management system (BMS) is critical to the safety and reliability of rechargeable and hybrid electric vehicles. To explicitly account for inevitable errors of battery model parameters, a robust fault detection method is proposed in this paper. The residual generator is established by exploiting an equivalent circuit model. The effect of uncertainties on the residual is parametrized as polynomial dependence on probabilistic uncertain parameters and noises. Then Gaussian mixtures are adopted to derive the residual distribution. To account for residual uncertainties in the detection decision, the weighted sum of distances from the generated residual to each Gaussian component of the residual distribution is proposed. Simulation results illustrate that our proposed method outperforms the conventional approach that does not consider parametric uncertainties.

In this paper, the robust containment control problem of the leader-following multi-agent systems with input saturation and input additive disturbance is addressed, where the followers can be informed by multiple leaders. With the help of the lowand-high gain feedback technique and the high-gain observer approach, a distributed control algorithm for each agent is firstly designed by using the observed output information, then sufficient conditions are provided to guarantee the semi-global robust containment of the system. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to verify the correctness of the theoretical results.

Synaptic learning with augmented spikes

Traditional neuron models use analog values for information representation and computation, while all-or-nothing spikes are employed in the spiking ones. With a more brain-like processing paradigm, spiking neurons are more promising for improvements on efficiency and computational capability. They extend the computation of traditional neurons with an additional dimension of time carried by all-or-nothing spikes. Could one benefit from both the accuracy of analog values and the time-processing capability of spikes? In this paper, we introduce a concept of augmented spikes to carry complementary information with spike coefficients in addition to spike latencies. New augmented spiking neuron model and synaptic learning rules are proposed to process and learn patterns of augmented spikes. We provide systematic insight into the properties and characteristics of our methods, including classification of augmented spike patterns, learning capacity, construction of causality, feature detection, robustness and applicability to practical tasks such as acoustic and visual pattern recognition. The remarkable results highlight the effectiveness and potential merits of our methods. Importantly, our augmented approaches are versatile and can be easily generalized to other spike-based systems, contributing to a potential development for them including neuromorphic computing. Multi-level graph convolutional network with automatic graph learning for hyperspectral image classification

Nowadays, deep learning methods, especially the Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), have shown impressive performance in hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. However, the current GCN-based methods treat graph construction and image classification as two separate tasks, which often results in suboptimal performance. Another defect of these methods is that they mainly focus on modeling the local pairwise importance between graph nodes while lack the capability to capture the global contextual information of HSI. In this paper, we propose a Multi-level GCN with Automatic Graph Learning method (MGCN-AGL) for HSI classification, which can automatically learn the graph information at both local and global levels. By employing attention mechanism to characterize the importance among spatially neighboring regions, the most relevant information can be adaptively incorporated to make decisions, which helps encode the spatial context to form the graph information at local level. Moreover, we utilize multiple pathways for local-level graph convolution, in order to leverage the merits from the diverse spatial context of HSI and to enhance the expressive power of the generated representations. To reconstruct the global contextual relations, our MGCN-AGL encodes the long range dependencies among image regions based on the expressive representations that have been produced at local level. Then inference can be performed along the reconstructed graph edges connecting faraway regions. Finally, the multi-level information is adaptively fused to generate the network output. In this means, the graph learning and image classification can be integrated into a unified framework and benefit each other. Extensive experiments have been conducted on three real-world hyperspectral datasets, which are shown to outperform the state-of-the-art methods. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

To realize the commercialization of SOFC, it must be ensured that it can work efficiently and stably. SOFC fault diagnosis becomes an essential part of the research. Due to the strong coupling of faults in the stack, this paper uses neural network algorithm to detect and diagnose faults. The simulation results verify that through the diagnosis of the test sample, the recognition rate of the test sample by the network is found to be 95%, which explains the neural network fault diagnosis model established in this paper on identifying the normal working state of the stack, the electrode stacking of the stack, and the gas leakage fault of the stack has good effectiveness and accuracy.

This paper aims at reducing the calibration effort of EEG-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). More specifically, in the context of cross-subject classification, we correct covariate shift of EEG data from different subjects, so that a classifier trained on auxiliary subjects can also be applied to a new subject, without any labeled trials from the new subject. Methods: We propose two approaches to enhance the performance of a state-of-the-art Riemannian space transfer learning (TL) algorithm: 1) trials selection, which resamples trials from the auxiliary subjects so that they become more consistent with those of the new subject;and, 2) channel selection, which reduces the number of channels and hence makes the Riemannian space computations more accurate and efficient. Results: We tested the proposed approaches on two motor imagery datasets. The results verified that they can enhance the performance of the state-of-the-art TL algorithm. Conclusion and significance: Our proposed approaches make the state-of-the-art TL algorithm more effective and efficient.
