We design a distributed coordinated guiding vector field (CGVF) for a group of robots to achieve ordering-flexible motion coordination while maneuvering on a desired two-dimensional (2D) surface. The CGVF is characterized by three terms, i.e., a convergence term to drive the robots to converge to the desired surface, a propagation term to provide a traversing direction for maneuvering on the desired surface, and a coordinated term to achieve the surface motion coordination with an arbitrary ordering of the robotic group. By setting the surface parameters as additional virtual coordinates, the proposed approach eliminates potential singularity of the CGVF and enables both the global convergence to the desired surface and the maneuvering on the surface from all possible initial conditions. The ordering-flexible surface motion coordination is realized by each robot to share with its neighbors only two virtual coordinates, i.e. that of a given target and that of its own, which reduces the communication and computation cost in multi-robot surface navigation. Impulse control of chaos in the exible shaft rotating-lifting system of the mono-silicon crystal puller

Chaos is shown to occur in the flexible shaft rotating-lifting (FSRL) system of the mono-silicon crystal puller. Chaos is, however, harmful for the quality of mono-silicon crystal production. Therefore, it should be suppressed. Many chaos control methods have been proposed theoretically and some have even been used in applications. For a practical plant displaying harmful chaos, engineers from a specified area usually face with the challenge to identifying chaos and to suppressing it by using a proper method. However, despite of the existing methods, chaos control method selection in the FSRL system is not a trivial task. For example, for the OGY method, if one cannot find a practical adjustable parameter, then the OGY method cannot be applied. An impulsive control method is being proposed which is efficiently able to suppress chaos in the FSRL system. The selection of the control parameters is obtained by using the Melnikov method. Simulation results show the correctness of our theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed chaos control method. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Cilin is one of the most popular semantic knowledge bases in Chinese information processing. Due to its coding scheme and taxonomical arrangement, some semantic relations among words are not explicitly shown. Our work aims to characterize its semantic relations by adding tags and compound codes to optimize the taxonomy and hierarchy of Cilin. Experiment results show that using the tag-augmented Cilin as a knowledge base improves the performance in the task of semantic similarity measurement.

Direction-Constrained control for Efficient Physical Human-Robot Interaction under Hierarchical Tasks

This paper proposes a control method to address the physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI) challenge in the context of hierarchical tasks. A common approach to managing hierarchical tasks is Hierarchical Quadratic Programming (HQP), which, however, cannot be directly applied to human interaction due to its allowance of arbitrary velocity direction adjustments. To resolve this limitation, we introduce the concept of directional constraints and develop a direction-constrained optimization algorithm to handle the nonlinearities induced by these constraints. The algorithm solves two sub-problems, minimizing the error and minimizing the deviation angle, in parallel, and combines the results of the two sub-problems to produce a final optimal outcome. The mutual influence between these two sub-problems is analyzed to determine the best parameter for combination. Additionally, the velocity objective in our control framework is computed using a variable admittance controller. Traditional admittance control does not account for constraints. To address this issue, we propose a variable admittance control method to adjust control objectives dynamically. The method helps reduce the deviation between robot velocity and human intention at the constraint boundaries, thereby enhancing interaction efficiency. We evaluate the proposed method in scenarios where a human operator physically interacts with a 7-degree-of-freedom robotic arm. The results highlight the importance of incorporating directional constraints in pHRI for hierarchical tasks. Compared to existing methods, our approach generates smoother robotic trajectories during interaction while avoiding interaction delays at the constraint boundaries. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. In this paper, rather than have a fixed constant matrix in the sandwich control of the nonlinear system, a fuzzy control matrix was used. In addition, simple inequalities that do not require additional computational time and skills in computer programming were used rather than the usual LMI. The result of this method is that the period T required in the control process is shorter and the control time is also reached much faster or reduced compared to the existing sandwich methods that used constant matrices. In other words, the control time of this method is shorter than the control time achieved when using constant matrices. Besides, this method also can be used to control more nonlinear chaotic systems such as Lorenz's, Rossler's and Chen's systems. Numerical simulations were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method.

In this paper, we propose a novel method based on color space volume and multimodal histogram thresholding (MHT) for leukocyte segmentation in human blood smear images under the rapid staining condition. The proposed method first defines a new color space volume to highlight the leukocyte's nucleus region, and it then uses the MHT method to extract the nucleus. Then, the proposed method takes the central region in the superpixel segmentation result as an initial leukocyte region, and it then uses the MHT method to extract the leukocyte region. Finally, the cytoplasm is obtained by subtracting the nucleus region from the leukocyte region. Experimental results on a dataset containing 300 leukocyte images under rapid staining condition show that the proposed method provides a higher segmentation accuracy than the counterparts.

Tongue image segmentation is a crucial step in developing an automatic tongue diagnosis system. After exploring characteristics of image thresholding in different color spaces, we propose a simple and effective tongue image segmentation method. Specifically, the proposed method first extracts an initial tongue body region by performing image thresholding on the transformed hue component in HSI (Hue, Saturation, and Intensity) color space. Then, one of two image thresholding results on the red component of an original tongue image is adaptively selected to find the gap region between the tongue body root and the upper lip. Finally, the initial tongue body region is refined by removing fake object regions such as the upper lip to obtain final tongue image segmentation result. Experimental results on a tongue image dataset containing 200 subjects demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Silicon crystal puller (SCP) is a key equipment in silicon wafer manufacture, which is, in turn, the base material for the most currently used integrated circuit (IC) chips. With the development of the techniques, the demand for longer mono-silicon crystal rod with larger diameter is continuously increasing in order to reduce the manufacture time and the price of the wafer. This demand calls for larger SCP with increasing height, however, it causes serious swing phenomenon of the crystal seed. The strong swing of the seed causes difficulty in the solidification and increases the risk of mono-silicon growth *** main aim of this paper is to analyze the nonlinear dynamics in the FSRL system of the SCP. A mathematical model for the swing motion of the FSRL system is derived. The influence of relevant parameters, such as system damping, excitation amplitude and rotation speed, on the stability and the responses of the system are analyzed. The stability of the equilibrium, bifurcation and chaotic motion are demonstrated, which are often observed in practical situations. Melnikov method is used to derive the possible parameter region that leads to chaotic motion. Three routes to chaos are identified in the FSRL system, including period doubling, symmetry-breaking bifurcation and interior crisis. The work in this paper explains the complex dynamics in the FSRL system of the SCP, which will be helpful for the SCP designers in order to avoid the swing phenomenon in the SCP. This paper proposes a seam carving algorithm based on saliency. This algorithm makes saliency detection to the source image. Images are classified according to the gray-scale of saliency detection. Adding different energy protection methods, it can protect the foreground area of a subject and detailed areas of the edge. Then the cumulative energy map is calculated. According to the principle of deleting the minimum energy pixel, single pixel-wide carves chosen to be deleted or copied. The experimental result shows that the algorithm avoids image restoration caused by extracting too many pixels in saliency area and non equal-ratio scaling. It reduces the deformed structures caused by displacement of edge pixel and also improves the integrity of algorithm. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

Short-Term Hybrid Prognostics of Fuel Cells: A Comparative and Improvement Study

Accurately predicting the performance degradation trend of fuel cells helps take measures in advance and prolong the service life of the stack, which led to the creation of a novel hybrid forecasting approach. The first grey model prediction method based on residual exponential smoothing optimization (ES-R-GM) can capture the voltage deterioration trend. The integration of two different ES techniques, specifically the double ES (ES2) and cubic ES (ES3), is explored to investigate their effect on improving the predictive accuracy of the GM model. The second method of the adaptive network fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) can characterize local nonlinear behaviour. The simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is utilized to optimize ANFIS results under different fuzzy rule selection strategies. The outcomes of the two types of prediction methods mentioned above are combined to create a hybrid prediction using the data fusion method and the moving window technique. Different hybrid methods are evaluated under general conditions and further detailed optimization. The proposed hybrid framework is verified by the data obtained from the experimental platform. Moreover, when applied to consistent public datasets, the hybrid approach maintains its robustness and accuracy compared with other prognostic methods. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
