Preserving Topology of Network Systems: Metric, Analysis, and Optimal Design

Preserving the topology from being inferred by external adversaries has become a paramount security issue for network systems (NSs), and adding random noises to the nodal states provides a promising way. Nevertheless, recent works have revealed that the topology cannot be preserved under i.i.d. noises in the asymptotic sense. How to effectively characterize the non-asymptotic preservation performance still remains an open issue. Inspired by the deviation quantification of concentration inequalities, this paper proposes a novel metric named trace-based variance-expectation ratio. This metric effectively captures the decaying rate of the topology inference error, where a slower rate indicates better non-asymptotic preservation performance. We prove that the inference error will always decay to zero asymptotically, as long as the added noises are non-increasing and independent (milder than the i.i.d. condition). Then, the optimal noise design that produces the slowest decaying rate for the error is obtained. More importantly, we amend the noise design by introducing one-lag time dependence, achieving the zero state deviation and the non-zero topology inference error in the asymptotic sense simultaneously. Extensions to a general class of noises with multi-lag time dependence are provided. Comprehensive simulations verify the theoretical findings. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Transmission-Constrained Consensus of Multiagent Networks

This article studies the consensus problem for multiagent systems with transmission constraints. A novel model of multiagent systems is proposed where the information transmissions between agents are disturbed by irregular distortions or interferences (named transmission constraint functions), and this model is universal which can be applied in many cases, such as interval consensus and discarded consensus. In the transmission-constrained consensus problem, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition that agents can converge to state consensus. Furthermore, a more general case is studied in which the system reaches an equilibrium. Based on some techniques of stability theory, the existence, uniqueness, and stability of the system equilibrium point can be proven, which means the system can reach an asymptotically stable equilibrium. Moreover, the state values of the equilibrium are only decided by the network structure and transmission constraint functions but not the agents' initial states. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the proposed theorems and corollaries. © 2014 IEEE.

This study introduces an innovative approach for gesture recognition in smart wearable devices using a deep domain adaptation model, focusing on the challenges posed by heterogeneous user environments and the need for precise, adaptable, and personalized gesture recognition systems. Traditional methods based on machine learning and deep learning techniques, while effective, struggle with the variance in data distribution among different users, leading to accuracy challenges. To address this, the study proposes the Domain Kernel-Alignment Adaptation Network (DKAN) model, utilizing a new Kernel-Aligned Multi-kernel Maximum Mean Discrepancy (KAMMD) method within deep networks. By calculating kernel alignments between source and target domains and adjusting weights of Gaussian kernels accordingly, DKAN emphasizes features conducive to transfer learning, enabling more accurate cross-user gesture recognition. The model achieves a significant average accuracy of 97.3% across 21 gestures, highlighting its potential in practical applications. This advancement addresses challenges in traditional gesture recognition methods and sets a new direction for future research in smart wearable technology. © 2024 Technical Committee on control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based seizure sub-type classification enhances clinical diagnosis efficiency. Source-free semi-supervised domain adaptation (SF-SSDA), which transfers a pre-trained model to a new dataset with no source data and limited labeled target data, can be used for privacy-preserving seizure subtype classification. This paper considers two challenges in SF-SSDA for EEG-based seizure subtype classification: 1) How to effectively fuse both raw EEG data and expert knowledge in classifier design? 2) How to align the source and target domain distributions for SF-SSDA? We propose a Knowledge-Data Fusion based SF-SSDA approach, KDF-MutuaISHOT, for EEG-based seizure subtype classification. In source model training, KDF uses Jensen-Shannon Diver-gence to facilitate mutual learning between a feature-driven Decision Tree-based model and a data-driven Transformer-based model. To adapt KDF to a new target dataset, an SF-SSDA algorithm, MutualSHOT, is developed, which features a consistency-based pseudo-label selection strategy. Experiments on the public TUSZ and CHSZ datasets demonstrated that KDF-MutualSHOT outperformed other supervised and source-free domain adaptation approaches in cross-subject seizure subtype classification. © 2024 IEEE.

Bagging and Boosting Fine-Tuning for Ensemble Learning

Ensemble learning aggregates outputs from multiple base learners for better performance. Bootstrap aggregating (bagging) and boosting are two popular such approaches. They are suitable for integrating unstable base learners with large variance and weak base learners with large bias, respectively, but not base learners with small variance and/or bias, e.g., support vector machine, regularized logistic regression, and ridge regression. This article proposes two novel ensemble-learning-based fine-tuning approaches, boosting fine-tuning (BF) and bagging and boosting fine-tuning (BBF), to fine-tune learners with small variance and/or bias for better performance. BF embeds boosting in a single hidden layer neural network. In each iteration, BF first uses the Newton's method to generate a temporary training set, and then trains a boosting learner on it. BBF combines BF and bagging. It first uses bootstrap to obtain multiple replicas of the training set, and then trains a BF learner on each replica. Extensive experiments on 46 real-world datasets demonstrated that BBF is flexible, robust, and effective, and can fine-tune many popular classifiers to achieve better generalization performance. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper solves the event-triggered robust consensus problem of disturbed multi-agent systems (MASs) in fully distributed fashion. First, a distributed extended state observer (DESO) is developed for appropriately estimating system states and external disturbances. Then, by utilising these estimates, a fully distributed event-triggering control protocol, that composes of an adaptive distributed controller to avoid using global information while maintaining desired consensus property, and a novel hybrid dynamic event-triggering mechanism (ETM) to save communication resources, is put forward for the MASs. It is notable that an auxiliary differential equation is incorporated in the triggering condition, with which, positive minimum interevent times (MIETs) are available to ease the hardware implementation, while being with adaptive coefficients, the proposed hybrid dynamic ETM can be independent of any global information. Finally, the obtained main results are testified via a numerical example. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Semisupervised domain adaptation (SSDA) aims at training a high-performance model for a target domain using few labeled target data, many unlabeled target data, and plenty of auxiliary data from a source domain. Previous works in SSDA mainly focused on learning transferable representations across domains. However, it is difficult to find a feature space where the source and target domains share the same conditional probability distribution. Additionally, there is no flexible and effective strategy extending existing unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) approaches to SSDA settings. In order to solve the above two challenges, we propose a novel fine-tuning framework, semisupervised transfer boosting (SS-TrBoosting). Given a well-trained deep learning-based UDA or SSDA model, we use it as the initial model, generate additional base learners by boosting, and then use all of them as an ensemble. More specifically, half of the base learners are generated by supervised domain adaptation, and half by semisupervised learning. Furthermore, for more efficient data transmission and better data privacy protection, we propose a source data generation approach to extend SS-TrBoosting to semisupervised source-free domain adaptation (SS-SFDA). Extensive experiments showed that SS-TrBoosting can be applied to a variety of existing UDA, SSDA, and SFDA approaches to further improve their performance. © 2020 IEEE.

Dear Editor, This letter investigates the prescribed-time stabilization of linear singularly perturbed systems. Due to the numerical issues caused by the small perturbation parameter, the off-the-shelf control design techniques for the prescribed-time stabilization of regular linear systems are typically not suitable here. To solve the problem, the decoupling transformation techniques for time-varying singularly perturbed systems are combined with linear time-varying high gain feedback design techniques.

Multi-Human Pose Estimation by Deep Learning-Based Sequential Approach for Human keypoint Position and Human Body Detection

Recent multimedia and computer vision research has focused on analyzing human behavior and activity using images. Skeleton estimation, known as pose estimation, has received a significant attention. For human pose estimation, deep learning approaches primarily emphasize on the keypoint features. Conversely, in the case of occluded or incomplete poses, the keypoint feature is insufficiently substantial, especially when there are multiple humans in a single frame. Other features, such as the body border and visibility conditions, can contribute to pose estimation in addition to the keypoint feature. Our model framework integrates multiple features, namely the human body mask features, which can serve as a constraint to keypoint location estimation, the body keypoint features, and the keypoint visibility via mask region-based convolutional neural network (Mask-RCNN). A sequential multi-feature learning setup is formed to share multi-features across the structure, whereas, in the Mask-RCNN, the only feature that could be shared through the system is the region of interest feature. By two-way up-scaling with the shared weight process to produce the mask, we have addressed the problems of improper segmentation, small intrusion, and object loss when Mask-RCNN is used, for instance, segmentation. Accuracy is indicated by the percentage of correct keypoint, and our model can identify 86.1% of the correct keypoints. © 2023, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
