A statistical method for no-reference image quality assessment

This paper proposes a statistical method for no-reference image quality assessment using steerable pyramid decomposition without any prior knowledge about the distortions of the original image. Because the means of (log2 of) subband coefficient amplitudes (MLSCAs) of the natural images have certain statistical properties independent of their contents, a predicted MLSCAs based on these properties can be considered as a reference index for describing the distorted images. A subband distortion is then defined as the difference between the predicted and real MLSCA of the distorted image. A set of weights for the subbands is used to combine the subband distortions into a quality score. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms six no-reference algorithms using natural scene statistics. 1553-9105/Copyright © 2014 Binary information Press

Spiking neural P systems with astrocytes (SNPA systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. In this work, we investigate the reversibility in SNPA systems as well as the computing power of reversible SNPA systems. It is proved that reversible SNPA systems are universal even if the forgetting rules and the feature of delay in spiking rules are not used, and each neuron contains only one spiking rule. The result suggests that the astrocytes do play a key role in achieving a desired computing power for reversible SNPA systems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

This paper presents a simple but effective sentence-length informed method to select informative sentences for active learning (AL) based SMT. A length factor is introduced to penalize short sentences to balance the "exploration" and "exploitation" problem. The penalty is dynamically updated at each iteration of sentence selection by the ratio of the current candidate sentence length and the overall average sentence length of the monolingual corpus. Experimental results on NIST Chinese–English pair and WMT French-English pair show that the proposed sentence-length penalty based method performs best compared with the typical selection method and random selection strategy. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In this work, inspired from this biological motivation that in living cells, the execution time of different biological processes is difficult to know precisely and very sensitive to environmental factors that might be hard to control, the computational efficiency and universality of timed P systems with membrane creation are investigated. Specifically, we give a time-free solution to SAT problem by a family of P systems with membrane creation in the sense that the correctness of the solution is irrelevant to the times associated with the involved rules. We further show that time-free P systems with membrane creation are computationally universal. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

This paper studies the containment and group dispersion control for a multi-robot system in the presence of dynamic leaders. Each robot is represented by a doubleintegrator dynamic model and a distributed control algorithm is developed to drive the multi-robot system to follow a group of dynamic leaders with containment and group dispersion behaviors. The effectiveness of the algorithm is then verified on a multi-robot control platform.

Spiking neural P systems (SN P systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. In this work, we consider SN P systems with the restriction: at each step the neuron with the maximum number of spikes among the neurons that can spike will fire (if there is a tie for the maximum number of spikes stored in the active neurons, only one of the neurons containing the maximum is chosen non-deterministically). We investigate the computational power of such sequential SN P systems that are used as language generators. We prove that recursively enumerable languages can be characterized as projections of inverse-morphic images of languages generated by that sequential SN P systems. The relationships of the languages generated by these sequential SN P systems with finite and regular languages are also investigated. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

DNA-based information processing includes storage, addressing, transporting and error-correction, etc. Here we describe a feasible model that can extract and transport the information from specified sources to targeted destinations. This model is established based on the DNA nanotechnologies of hybridization, DNA strand displacement and nanoparticle aggregation reactions. By adding the extracting strands, the data strands of specified sources can be extracted, and then transported to the targets by the transporting strands. The result could be detected by observing the change of color through the naked eyes. Theoretical analysis indicates that thismodel could achieve the parallel information extracting and transporting from different specified sources to different targeted destination, which offers a realistic technology for the flexibility of managing information. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

During the strip laminar cooling process, the switching of cooling valves is decided by different operating modes, initial and rolling-terminating conditions. Aimed at shortening the development cycle and at the same time assuring the quality and regularity of the controlling program, this paper has designed a hot strip laminar cooling prediction software adopting the RTW code generating technique. First, the Simulink model of the cooling process is built. Second, the model is converted by RTW into C code which can launch without Matlab. Finally, the graphical user interface design is completed with the generated code incorporated in. Experiment shows that the software developed with this method can gain the same results as Simulink model. The work of manual coding is substantially reduced. The combination of convenient modeling of Simulink and flexible GUI designing of VC can provide better reliability and practicability than traditional software developing. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
