Enterprises currently face the challenge of reducing production cycles and costs and utilizing existing cases for making changes and iterations has emerged as a viable solution. However, the acquisition and modification of historical cases present their challenges. To address this, the present paper proposes an intelligent design method based on reinforcement learning that aims to meet the demand for efficient and high-quality design solutions in the field of engineering design. This method comprises four key steps: case characterization, matching, retrieval, and selection. By employing case characterization and matching, users can acquire sets of similar cases that align closely with their specific requirements. Building upon this foundation incorporates a combination of reinforcement learning and weight order cross-reconstruction to generate more proposals. Subsequently, the multi-attribute decision-making method is utilized to select the extended set of design schemes. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through its successful application to a radar design case. © 2023 IEEE.

AME4163: Principles of Engineering Design is a design, build and test course offered at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, USA. Throughout the semester students are expected to reflect on authentic and immersive experiences and write Take-aways and Learning Statements. At the end of the semester each student submits a summative Semester Learning Essay. Between 2019-2021 we collected about 10,000 Take-aways and Learning Statements from the Semester Learning Essays of nearly 400 students. In this paper, we attempt to help instructors gain insight of what students have learned through these materials and thence improve the delivery of the course in the future. We analyze their Take-aways from summative Semester Learning Essays by using dictionary-based sentiment analysis to assess students' subjective feelings toward what they have learned. The results prove that we gain insight into their learning thereby providing instructors with evidence-based guidance on modifying the course from different perspectives. The method proposed is generalizable to courses that involve authentic immersive experiences. © 2023 IEEE.

Digital transformation in manufacturing has become a trend with the continuous development of cloud computing and edge computing. The production process of firearms components is highly challenging and quality problems in the production process may directly affect the safety of people's lives and property. Thus, this paper proposes a production-quality early warning method for firearms components based on cloud-edge collaboration. Real-time early warning and rapid processing for abnormal conditions in the production process are realized based on cloud data analysis and edge intelligent prediction, thereby improving production efficiency and quality. The cloud edge collaboration framework is developed for cloud training of the long short-term memory models and real-time sample edge acquisition, enhancing the adaptability of quality early warning algorithms under specific conditions and the real-time quality of early warning for firearms components. © 2023 ACM.

Human-robot collaboration (HRC) plays an important role in human-centric manufacturing, which requires cooperative robots to have the ability of collaborate with human autonomously. It is very complex to understand the intention of human during the assembly process, therefore, we proposed a method of autonomous HRC assembly driven by the fusion of large language model (LLM) and digital twin in this paper. The assembly state is recognized from two perspectives, including the perception of key parts based on transfer learning and YOLO, and perceive operator actions based on LSTM and attention mechanism. In order to improve the autonomy of HRC, a collaborative task decision method driven by fine-tuning LLM based on assembly domain knowledge is proposed. A case study of reducer assembly is presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

When natural or man-made disasters occur at sea, a maritime unmanned rescue system-of-systems (MURSoSs), as an important guarantee for the safety of people's lives and property, has a rapid response to emergency rescue services. In the design process of MURSoSs, it is often faced with problems such as unexplainable mechanisms and inaccurate modeling due to the characteristics of multi-level coupling and irregular emergence. A design method of MURSoSs based on an attention Transformer is proposed. First, this paper decomposes the MURSoSs into a multi-level organizational structure composed of individual performance, group structure, and overall effectiveness. Second, the maritime unmanned rescue simulation environment is constructed, to obtain the multi-level evolution data of group structure and overall effectiveness under different individual performance, and the attention Transformer is used to mine the functional correlation relationship between levels. Finally, the experimental simulation prediction is carried out by using this function relationship. Taking the design of MURSoSs as an example, the results show that the constructed model accurately quantifies the correlation relationship between levels and effectively reveal the internal logic of the emergence process of maritime rescue. © 2024 IEEE.

In industry 4.0/5.0, Smart manufacturing systems are typically complex systems that can be adjusted to deal with demand fluctuation through reconfigurable software/hardware. The emergence of digital twin as enabler technology can promote the operation efficiency of smart manufacturing systems. However, the modelling processes of digital twin of smart manufacturing systems is inefficient due to their complicated structures in general. Besides, the frequent reconfiguration of smart manufacturing systems and the differentiation among smart manufacturing systems will increase the burden of digital twin modelling. Therefore, a reconfigurable modelling method for digital twin of smart manufacturing systems is proposed in this paper. First, a reconfigurable modelling framework based on open architecture is proposed to provide basic model scenario for digital twin of smart manufacturing systems. Second, the reconfiguration of digital twin is elaborated from three dimensions, including reconfigurable virtual model, reconfigurable mapping, and reconfigurable scene. Gaussian Process Regression Modeling of Satellite Antenna Thermal Deformation: A New Approach for High-Dimensional Inputs

Satellite antennas are critical to space communications but are vulnerable to thermal deformations in extreme space environments. Predicting and controlling these deformations has become an important research direction, which highly depends on the prediction accuracy. To accurately predict these deformations, thermal deformation modeling requires the discretization of the field. This study introduces a novel approach that utilizes Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) to model the thermal deformation in satellite antennas. To overcome GPR’s limitation of high-dimensional problem, our approach integrates GPR with adaptive projection dimensionality reduction which is based on the assumption of a low-dimensional subspace and independent of gradient information. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves a goodness of fit closely comparable to active subspace methods that utilize gradient information, which is often unknown in many situations. In practical engineering cases of satellite antenna thermal deformation, our method shows higher predictive accuracy compared to standard GPR and GPR combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) dimensionality reduction, especially in scenarios with limited data. By implementing GPR in a reduced-dimensional space, our method significantly enhances prediction accuracy. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Automatic optimization algorithms play an important role in vehicle body lightweight design;however, the existing methods are still inefficient and result in excessive iterations that escalate both time and costs. Current interactive optimization strategies partially mitigate this issue but fall short in offering a broad spectrum of manipulation points and auxiliary information model, essential for optimizing design efficiency and accuracy. As such, we introduce a novel approach, "Human-in-the-Loop based method for Vehicle Body Lightweight Design" (HIL-VBLD). This method seamlessly integrates human decision-making with optimization algorithms to reduce unproductive iterations. HIL-VBLD comprises two key components: (1) a novel interaction mode offering multiple manipulation points including constraint modification, algorithm switching, and selection of solutions of interest (SOI);(2) A comprehensive auxiliary information model aids in decision-making for designers. Our analysis underscores HIL-VBLD's efficacy, evidenced by a 54.5% reduction in iteration cycles for genetic algorithm using SOI selection. Algorithm switching led to a 4.5% mass reduction, circumventing local optimum pitfalls associated with gradient algorithms. Additionally, the auxiliary information model contributed to a further 1.25% mass reduction, enhancing optimization robustness. Compared to conventional automatic algorithm switching strategies, HIL-VBLD maintains equivalent accuracy with 23.9% fewer iterations. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
