Currently the DSP applications such as multimedia processing raise the demands to IC designers for more flexibility, higher performance and shorter time-to-market. To solve these problems, this paper proposed a novel reconfigurable operator based IC design methodology for multimedia applications. Four kinds of reconfigurable operators and their logic meanings are introduced in this paper as well as the design flow. An archetypal reconfigurable circuit with 4*4 reconfigurable computing operator, reALU, is implemented in our research using SMIC 0.18 um CMOS, achieving the performance 2.4 GOPS at 150 Mhz at 1.62 v. Several algorithms such as SAD and DCT are mapped into the array processor, which show the better performance than the traditional digital signal processors.

Nowadays mobile multimedia raise the demand of higher performance, larger amounts of flexibility as well as strict energy constrains. Reconfigurable multimedia array processor (ReMAP) provides architecture with high programmable coarse-grained computational resources and flexible interconnect. To reduce the power consumption of memory access, we present an approach for computing control of the reconfigurable processor. By configuring the operation and settling down the data path of computational resources as initialization, data stream in processor accomplishing algorithm implement without access context memory frequently, which can achieve barely the same energy consumption as ASICs.

OFDM is facing great opportunities and challenges in current broadband communication era. These opportunities and challenges derive from the native advantages and disadvantages of OFDM technology respectively. Too high PAPR is one of the main problems that prevent OFDM from being used more generally in broadband systems. Many approaches such as clipping and filtering, coding, SLM, PTS, and tone reservation have been studied to reduce the peak magnitude of OFDM symbols. In these approaches, tone reservation is considered as one of the most promising methods because of no additional distortion, no side information, and low implementation cost. In this paper, a novel tone reservation scheme is presented. Its essential idea is that a subcarrier selected from all reserved subcarriers for PAPR reduction should have a phase close to one of phi, pi/2+phi, pi+phi and -pi/2+phi, at the peak location in time domain, where phi is the phase of the peak sample. This results in no complex multiplication and division in the novel scheme. In addition, the floating positions of such selected subcarriers in frequency domain are helpful to the convergence of the algorithm. The simulation results show that the scheme can provide good performance and fast convergence.

IEEE 802.11 b and g standards, which are compatible with each other, are combined to provide higher-performance wireless communication with more options of data rates. In order to meet the upgrading demands of 802.11 standards and other standards using DSSS and OFDM as the pivotal algorithms of physical-layer parts, a SOC (or ASIC+DSP) solution is used to realize the baseband system. The paper firstly introduces the features of the 802.11b/g PHY, and then gives the architecture and layout of BX501, the chip designed and taped out in SMIC 0.18-micron technology. The paper also presents the testing results that prove the chip can fulfill the modulation/demodulation functions of the 802.11b/g PHY. At last, a conclusion is made that points out the importance of system-level verification.

In OFDM system, because of sensitivity to carrier frequency offset, frequency offset must be compensated before DFT in the receiver. In this paper, we present a maximum likelihood estimation for carrier frequency offset, based on OFDM symbol has no virtual sub-carriers. The estimation are compose of two parts, blind estimation makes use of cyclic prefix for every symbol and data-aid estimation makes use of two consequent OFDM symbols which are similar or relative to each other. Data-aid estimation performs well and simulation result converges upon Cramer-Rao lower bound. Blind estimation performs inferior, but it can be used in tracking mode.
