The goal of fine-grained image description generation techniques is to learn detailed information from images and simulate human-like descriptions that provide coherent and comprehensive textual details about the image content. Currently, most of these methods face two main challenges: description repetition and omission. Moreover, the existing evaluation metrics cannot clearly reflect the performance of models on these two issues. To address these challenges, we propose an innovative Fine-grained Image Description Generation model based on Joint Objectives. Furthermore, we introduce new object-based evaluation metrics to more intuitively assess the model’s performance in handling description repetition and omission. This novel approach combines visual features at both the image level and object level to maximize their advantages and incorporates an object penalty mechanism to reduce description repetition. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method significantly improves the CIDEr evaluation metric, indicating its excellent performance in addressing description repetition and omission issues. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Any-Angle Routing Algorithm for Microfluidic Biochips Driven by Flow Path

Continuous-flow microfluidic biochips (CFMBs) have become a hot research topic in recent years due to their ability to perform biochemical assays automatically and efficiently. For the first time, PathDriver+ takes the requirements of the actual fluid transportation into account in the design process of CFMBs and implements the actual fluid transport and removal, and plans separate flow paths for each transport task, which have been neglected in previous work. However, PathDriver+ does not take full advantage of the flexibility of CFMBs routing because it only considers the optimization of flow channel length for the global routing in the mesh model, except for the detailed routing. In addition, PathDriver+ only considers the X architecture, while the existing work shows that the any-angle routing can utilize the routing resources more efficiently and shorten the flow channel length. To address the above issues, we propose a flow path-driven arbitrary angle routing algorithm, which can improve the utilization of routing resources and reduce the flow channel length while considering the actual fluid transportation requirements. The proposed algorithm constructs a search graph based on constrained Delaunay triangulation to improve the search efficiency of routing solutions while ensuring the routing quality. Then, a Dijkstra-based flow path routing method is used on the constructed search graph to generate a routing result with a short channel length quickly. In addition, in the routing process, channel reuse strategy and intersection optimization strategy are proposed for the flow path reuse and intersection number optimization problems, respectively, to further improve the quality of routing results. The experimental results show that compared with the latest work PathDriver+, the length of channels, the number of ports used, and the number of channel intersections are significantly reduced by 33.21%, 11.04%, and 44.79%, respectively, and the channel reuse rate is i

The rehearsal strategy is widely used to alleviate the catastrophic forgetting problem in class incremental learning (CIL) by preserving limited exemplars from previous tasks. With imbalanced sample numbers between old and new classes, the classifier learning can be biased. Existing CIL methods exploit the long-tailed (LT) recognition techniques, e.g., the adjusted losses and the data re-sampling methods, to handle the data imbalance issue within each increment task. In this work, the dynamic nature of data imbalance in CIL is shown and a novel Dynamic Residual Classifier (DRC) is proposed to handle this challenging scenario. Specifically, DRC is built upon a recent advance residual classifier with the branch layer merging to handle the model-growing problem. Moreover, DRC is compatible with different CIL pipelines and substantially improves them. Combining DRC with the model adaptation and fusion (MAF) pipeline, this method achieves state-of-the-art results on both the conventional CIL and the LT-CIL benchmarks. Extensive experiments are also conducted for a detailed analysis. The code is publicly available 1 .

A Decentralized Threshold Credential Management with Fine-Grained Authentication for VANETs

In Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), vehicles must authenticate their identities before accessing services. However, existing authentication schemes based on anonymous credentials still face single-point failure in multi-authority scenarios. In addition, in traditional anonymous credential schemes, the public key of credential authority is used directly to verify the credential, which may increase the risk of vehicle privacy being misused. To address these issues, we propose a decentralized threshold credential management system with fine-grained authentication for VANETs. The decentralized credential management architecture is proposed for VANETs with multiple credential authorities, each credential authority consists of multiple credential managers who issue credentials using the threshold mechanism, effectively solving the single-point failure. Based on this architecture, we design a fine grained, privacy-preserving authentication scheme that allows vehicles to autonomously perform selective attribute disclosure, credential aggregation, and randomization before requesting verification from the Cloud Service Provider, thereby achieving a balance between privacy preservation and authentication efficiency. The security proofs and analysis show that our scheme satisfies the target security properties. Performance evaluations indicate that our scheme enables efficient, flexible credential management and authentication in VANETs while ensuring privacy preservation. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

Control Logic Routing for Continuous-Flow Microfluidic Biochips Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning

With the advancement of electronic design automation, continuous-flow microfluidic biochips have become one of the most promising platforms for biochemical experiments. This chip manipulates fluid samples in milliliters or nanoliters by utilizing internal microvalves and microchannels, and thus automatically performs basic biochemical experiments, such as mixing and detection. To achieve the correct bioassay function, the microvalves deployed inside the chip are usually managed by a multiplexer-based control logic, and valves receive control signals from a core input through the control channel for accurate switching. Since biochemical reactions typically require high sensitivity, the length of control paths connecting each valve needs to be reduced to ensure immediate signal propagation, and thus to reduce the signal propagation delay. In addition, to reduce the fabrication cost of chips, a vital issue to be addressed in the logic architecture design is how to effectively reduce the total channel length within the control logic. To address the above issues, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-based control logic routing algorithm to minimize the signal propagation delay and total control channel length, thereby automatically constructing an efficient control channel network. The algorithm employs the dueling deep Q-network architecture as the agent of the deep reinforcement learning framework to evaluate the tradeoff between signal propagation delay and total channel length. Besides, the diagonal channel routing is implemented for the first time for control logic, thus fundamentally improving the efficiency of valve switching operations and reducing the fabrication cost of the chip. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can effectively construct a high-performance and low-cost control logic architecture. © 2025 Science Press. All rights reserved.

Self-supervised pre-training followed by fine-tuning is a potent paradigm for few-shot learning, leveraging extensive unlabeled data with remarkable efficacy. Current self-supervised methods often lean towards Vision Transformers (ViTs) rather than CNN-Transformer hybrid architectures, which generally demonstrate superior performance. However, this reliance on ViTs can lead to poor perception of local features by the model. The challenge lies in designing a suitable proxy task for hybrid architectures like CNN-Transformers, which have significant structural differences. Additionally, the current organization of CNN-Transformer hybrid backbones is often sequential, hindering collaboration during pre-training and the acquisition of robust representations. To address these issues, we propose Self-Supervised Collaborative CNN-Transformer (S2CCT) for few-shot medical image segmentation. This framework introduces three innovative designs: (1) a composite proxy task based on image masking and image super-resolution tailored for CNN-Transformer hybrid architectures, enabling the backbone to acquire robust representations during pre-training that can be transferred to downstream tasks;(2) a parallel CNN-Transformer architecture that better attends to multi-scale features in images, making it more suitable for dense prediction tasks like image segmentation;(3) a sparse and dense feature fusion module to enhance collaboration between the two encoders. Experiments demonstrate that S2CCT outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods on two public medical image segmentation benchmarks, i.e., ACDC and KiTs19. Constrained Squared Sine Derived Adaptive Algorithm: Performance and Analysis

A constrained squared sine derived adaptive (CSSDA) algorithm is proposed in this paper, which provides better steady-state behavior than existing algorithms in impulsive-noise environments. The devised CSSDA is constructed via constructing a constrained cost function on the basis of squared sine functioned system estimate error. Theoretical analysis of the CSSDA is presented and compared with the simulations. The simulation results show that the theoretical analysis agrees well with simulations, helping to verify the effectiveness and correctness of the analysises. Also, the performance of the CSSDA is superior to the recent popular constraint adaptive algorithms for system identifications in a variety of environments with non-Gaussian impulsive-noises. © 2022, The Authors. The Affine-Projection Maximum Asymmetric Correntropy Criterion (APMACC) is constructed, drawing upon the fundamental principles of the maximum asymmetric correntropy criterion and an affine-projection scheme. The APMACC algorithm incorporates the asymmetric Gaussian model as a kernel function within the Affine-Projection (AP) algorithm framework, thereby endowing it with robustness against asymmetrically distributed noise. Furthermore, the bound for step-size is established in the literature. Simulation results demonstrate that the APMACC has fast convergence and low steady-state.

Gathering reliable labeled samples for polarimetric synthetic aperture (PolSAR) image classification is laborious. Moreover, applying a trained classifier to new domains often leads to noticeable performance degradation due to domain disparities. Therefore, this paper proposes the novel complex-valued cross-domain (CD) few-shot learning classification (CCFSLC) method for PolSAR images to address these issues. Firstly, the transferrable knowledge learning module (TKLM) with a complex-valued feature encoder (CVFE) is trained using source data with sufficient labeled samples. Then, the deep few-shot learning module (DFSLM), constructed using the pre-trained CVFE, is trained by episodes in both source and target domains, with only minimal target labeled samples. Meanwhile, the adversarial domain adaptation module (ADAM) is employed to eliminate domain shift. The proposed CCFSLC mainly focuses on exploring discriminative information from raw PolSAR data, while reducing the domain gap to recognize novel categories in unseen domains with only a few annotated samples. Experiments on typical PolSAR datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The currently constructed millimeter wave imaging system has the problems of long sampling time and more sampling points of antenna units, and the use of compressed perception algorithm can improve the imaging quality when the number of sampling points are much smaller than the Nyquist distance sampling. The traditional compressed perception algorithm can achieve better sparse recovery than the matched filter imaging algorithm, but there is a large dimension of the measurement matrix and high computational complexity. For the problems of difficult data processing and large dimensions of measurement matrix, a sparse imaging regularization model is constructed based on approximate observation, and an improved soft threshold iterative algorithm is used with adaptive step size, which improves the convergence performance, reduces the computational complexity of the sparse recovery dramatically and achieves a better quality of sparse imaging than the traditional compressed perception algorithm.
