A federated learning (FL) system first needs to use heterogeneous clients to recruit data, and then perform data training locally on the client to finish model training for preserving users’ data privacy. Yet clients still face the cost of computational energy consumption on model training and parameter transmission and are reluctant to join federated learning platform. Thus, incentive mechanisms are needed when inviting numerous clients to help train the global model. However, static pricing cannot adjust data size adaptively to minimize cost due to client random arrival for participation and incomplete information about computing cost. Moreover, how to balance data sampling time and model training for finite time horizons is under-explored. Therefore, in this paper, a two-phase FL model consisting of the data recruitment phase and model training phase is formulated to study the clients’ incentive mechanism design under incomplete information about clients’ arrivals and their private costs. First, we propose a dynamic pricing scheme for homogeneous clients that offer time-dependent monetary returns to clients by considering the tradeoff between the total payment to clients and the model accuracy loss. We show that the pricing should increase over time in the data-sampling phase due to data aging. Then we obtain the best time partition between data sampling and training phases under a closed-form dynamic pricing solution. It is shown that a small data recruitment threshold should be allocated if the client’ training time per global iteration is long. Further, the extension to heterogeneous clients with different data size and working time is discussed regarding to the optimal dynamic pricing and recruitment threshold. We prove monotonicity in multiple client-type choice and a linear algorithm is proposed to find the optimal recruitment threshold and client-type choice for total cost minimization. Interventional Multi-Instance Learning with Deconfounded Instance-Level Prediction

When applying multi-instance learning (MIL) to make predictions for bags of instances, the prediction accuracy of an instance often depends on not only the instance itself but also its context in the corresponding bag. From the viewpoint of causal inference, such bag contextual prior works as a confounder and may result in model robustness and interpretability issues. Focusing on this problem, we propose a novel interventional multi-instance learning (IMIL) framework to achieve deconfounded instance-level prediction. Unlike traditional likelihood-based strategies, we design an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm based on causal intervention, providing a robust instance selection in the training phase and suppressing the bias caused by the bag contextual prior. Experiments on pathological image analysis demonstrate that our IMIL method substantially reduces false positives and outperforms state-of-the-art MIL methods. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. This paper addresses the global consensus problem for multi-input multi-output saturated systems within a sampled-data framework, aiming to advance global consensus, manage heterogeneous actuator saturation across components, and preserve distributed characteristics by using sampled-data feedback. We propose a distributed control algorithm that incorporates a redesigned saturation function, represented as decentralized dynamic saturation levels. These levels for each agent’s dimensions are autonomously updated through an adaptive strategy, which mitigates heterogeneous saturation by carefully selecting constant and time-varying saturation parameters in it. Lyapunov analysis proves that global consensus can be achieved under the proposed control law, provided the sampling periods of all agents remain below a calculated threshold. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Coordinated Guiding Vector Field Design for Ordering-Flexible Multi-Robot Surface Navigation

We design a distributed coordinated guiding vector field (CGVF) for a group of robots to achieve ordering-flexible motion coordination while maneuvering on a desired two-dimensional (2D) surface. The CGVF is characterized by three terms, i.e., a convergence term to drive the robots to converge to the desired surface, a propagation term to provide a traversing direction for maneuvering on the desired surface, and a coordinated term to achieve the surface motion coordination with an arbitrary ordering of the robotic group. By setting the surface parameters as additional virtual coordinates, the proposed approach eliminates potential singularity of the CGVF and enables both the global convergence to the desired surface and the maneuvering on the surface from all possible initial conditions. The ordering-flexible surface motion coordination is realized by each robot to share with its neighbors only two virtual coordinates, i.e. that of a given target and that of its own, which reduces the communication and computation cost in multi-robot surface navigation. Molecular representation learning is widely used in the field of drug discovery, due to its ability to accurately capture the complex features of compounds in high-dimensional space. However, existing molecular representation learning models are prone to be influenced by spurious parts during distribution shifts (also known as out-of-distribution, or OOD), which results in models mistakenly treating these spurious parts as crucial features of molecules, thereby limiting the generalization capability of the models. To tackle this issue, a novel invariant molecular representation learning model, called Causal Invariant Hierarchical Molecular Representation Graph Neural Networks (CHiMoGNN), is proposed for OOD molecular property prediction. In CHiMoGNN, a Feature Enhancement (FE) module is designed to leverage the multi-level molecular parts to enhance the expression of invariant features, thereby enhancing the model’s capability to capture key molecular information. In addition, a Cartesian Product based Environmental Impact (EI) module is adopted to generate counterfactual samples with environmental diversity. Consequently, these samples are utilized to train a classifier that maintains consistent performance across various environments. Extensive experiments on seven real-world datasets demonstrate that CHiMoGNN outperforms 9 state-of-the-art models, achieving a 5.73% increase in average ROC-AUC, and the results also show that CHiMoGNN can effectively maintain generalization in various distribution shifts. AdaFuse: Adaptive Medical image Fusion Based on Spatial-Frequential Cross Attention

Multi-modal medical image fusion is essential for the precise clinical diagnosis and surgical navigation since it can merge the complementary information in multi-modalities into a single image. The quality of the fused image depends on the extracted single modality features as well as the fusion rules for multi-modal information. Existing deep learning-based fusion methods can fully exploit the semantic features of each modality, they cannot distinguish the effective low and high frequency information of each modality and fuse them adaptively. To address this issue, we propose AdaFuse, in which multimodal image information is fused adaptively through frequency-guided attention mechanism based on Fourier transform. Specifically, we propose the cross-attention fusion (CAF) block, which adaptively fuses features of two modalities in the spatial and frequency domains by exchanging key and query values, and then calculates the cross-attention scores between the spatial and frequency features to further guide the spatial-frequential information fusion. The CAF block enhances the high-frequency features of the different modalities so that the details in the fused images can be retained. Moreover, we design a novel loss function composed of structure loss and content loss to preserve both low and high frequency information. Extensive comparison experiments on several datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of both visual quality and quantitative metrics. This paper proposes a joint gain and input design method for observer-based asymptotic active fault diagnosis, which is based on a newly-defined notion named the excluding degree of the origin from a zonotope. Using the excluding degree, a quantitative specification is obtained to characterize the performance of set-based robust fault diagnosis. Furthermore, a single gain design method and a joint gain and input design method are proposed, respectively. This is the first work to achieve a joint observer gain and input design for set-based active fault diagnosis. Compared with the existing methods that design gains and input separately, the proposed joint gain and input design method has advantages to exploit the fault diagnosis potential of observer-based schemes. Commonsense question answering (CSQA) aims to answer questions which require the system to understand related commonsense knowledge that is not explicitly expressed in the given context. Recent advance in neural language models (e.g., BERT) that are pre-trained on a large-scale text corpus and fine-tuned on downstream tasks has boosted the performance on CSQA. However, due to the lack of domain knowledge (e.g., in social situations), these models fail to reason about specific tasks. In this work, we propose an approach to incorporate domain knowledge and semantic information into language model based approaches for better understanding the related commonsense knowledge. Firstly, we extract the knowledge from existing resources by jointly learning to ask and answer as well as semantic role labeling based answering. These two tasks are correlated and can reinforce each other to discover the domain knowledge. Then, we utilize Semantic Role Labeling to enable the system to gain a better understanding of relations among relevant entities. Experimental results on several CSQA benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

OadTR: Online action detection with transformers

Most recent approaches for online action detection tend to apply Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to capture long-range temporal structure. However, RNN suffers from non-parallelism and gradient vanishing, hence it is hard to be optimized. In this paper, we propose a new encoder-decoder framework based on Transformers, named OadTR, to tackle these problems. The encoder attached with a task token aims to capture the relationships and global interactions between historical observations. The decoder extracts auxiliary information by aggregating anticipated future clip representations. Therefore, OadTR can recognize current actions by encoding historical information and predicting future context simultaneously. We extensively evaluate the proposed OadTR on three challenging datasets: HDD, TVSeries, and THUMOS14. The experimental results show that OadTR achieves higher training and inference speeds than current RNN based approaches, and significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both mAP and mcAP.
