Amplified emission and lasing enabled by high-Q quasi-bound states in asymmetric dielectric metasurfaces via eigenfield perturbation

Symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum represent a distinct class of nonradiative modes in continuous media. By introducing asymmetric parameters into a symmetric metasurface, the inherent symmetry can be broken, transforming BICs—originally decoupled from external radiation channels—into high-Q quasi-BICs with controlled radiation capabilities. However, manufacturing constraints pose a significant challenge in fabricating nanostructures with ultra-small asymmetric parameters, thereby limiting the achievable Q-factor. In this work, we propose an asymmetric perforated metasurface structure that supports BICs. When the perforations are shifted along the x or y axis to a specific position, the linewidth vanishes, and simulations confirm the emergence of a BIC in the system, with a quality factor reaching up to 10 9 . Furthermore, we demonstrate that selective eigenmode perturbation can effectively transform BICs into practical quasi-BICs. Notably, for the same structure, perturbing the weak-field region yields higher Q-factors, offering a flexible approach to optimizing performance. This approach enables precise Q-factor control and enhanced radiation properties. Furthermore, we design a laser cavity structure based on these quasi-BICs, achieving amplified emission and lasing with excellent agreement between simulations and theoretical predictions. These findings expand the BIC library and offer new methods for Q-factor manipulation, paving the way for high-performance optoelectronic devices such as nanolasers, biosensors, and nonlinear harmonic generators.

The nutritional value of agricultural products is an important indicator for evaluating their quality, which directly affects people's dietary choices and overall well-being. Nutritional assessment studies provide a scientific basis for the production, processing, and marketing of food by analyzing the nutrients they contain. Traditional methods often struggle with suboptimal accuracy and can be time consuming, as well as a shortage of professionals. The progress in artificial intelligence has revolutionized dietary health by offering more accessible methods for food nutritional assessment using vision-based approaches. However, existing vision-based methods using RGB images often face challenges due to varying lighting conditions, impacting the accuracy of nutritional assessment. An alternative is the RGB-D fusion method, which combines RGB images and depth maps. Yet, these methods typically rely on simple fusion techniques that do not ensure precise assessment. Additionally, current vision-based methods struggle to detect small components like oils and sugars on food surfaces, crucial for determining ingredient information and ensuring accurate nutritional assessment. In this pursuit, we propose a novel ingredient-guided RGB-D fusion network that integrates RGB images with depth maps and enables more reliable nutritional assessment guided by ingredient information. Specifically, the multifrequency bimodality fusion module is designed to leverage the correlation between the RGB image and the depth map within the frequency domain. Furthermore, the progressive-fusion module and ingredient-guided module leverage ingredient information to explore the potential correlation between ingredients and nutrients, thereby enhancing the guidance for nutritional assessment learning. We evaluate our approach on a variety of ablation settings on Nutrition5k, where it consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), particularly coronary artery disease (CAD), remain the leading cause of global mortality, necessitating advanced diagnostic solutions. Accurate deformable image registration plays a crucial role in enhancing segmentation precision and classification performance in cardiovascular imaging. However, existing registration methods, including VoxelMorph, face limitations in computational efficiency and memory usage, restricting their real-time applicability for high-resolution cardiac imaging. This study proposes the Mamba-Optimized VoxelMorph framework, which leverages GPU-based parallelization and memory optimization to address these challenges. The framework achieves superior registration accuracy, yielding a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 0.95 and Normalized Cross-Correlation (NCC) of 0.90, while reducing computational time by 40% and memory usage to 800 MB. These advancements ensure efficient alignment of complex cardiac structures, thereby improving segmentation accuracy and classification reliability. By addressing these critical limitations, the Mamba-Optimized VoxelMorph framework significantly enhances cardiovascular imaging, enabling precise, scalable, and real-time deformable image registration for improved CAD diagnosis and treatment planning. © 2013 IEEE.

Computational music emotion recognition (MER) is an important task that aims to recognize emotional content in music tracks. Understanding the emotional content of music can help tailor therapeutic interventions to specific emotional needs, potentially improving their effectiveness. Piano music is widely used in music therapy for depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. However, comparatively little work has been done on MER in piano music, which is a challenging task due to the unique difficulties in recognizing emotions in single-timbre music without vocals, especially on valence. In this paper, we propose a novel Double-Mix-Net model that utilizes the multi-layer feature mixing and multi-modal feature mixing methods to improve classification performance. Our model uses both the title of the YouTube music video and the music context to predict the emotion of a given music track. Additionally, we make full use of different granularity features through the multi-layer feature mixing method. Our proposed model achieved state-of-the-art accuracy performance of 73.8% on the Emopia dataset and is the first multi-modal network designed for piano emotion recognition. The results of our study highlight the importance of considering the music title and utilizing multi-layer feature mixing methods in piano music emotion recognition. This work helps the emotional understanding of piano music. Our proposed model can be applied in various domains such as music recommendation systems, film scoring, and game design to enhance the emotional impact of music. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Existing evaluations of tool learning primarily focus on validating the alignment of selected tools (e.g., various APIs) for large language models (LLMs) with expected outcomes. However, these approaches rely on a limited set of scenarios where answers can be pre-determined. Furthermore, a sole emphasis on outcomes disregards the complex capabilities required for LLMs to effectively use tools. To tackle this issue, we propose ToolEyes, a fine-grained system tailored for the evaluation of the LLMs' tool learning capabilities in authentic scenarios. The system meticulously examines seven real-world scenarios, analyzing five dimensions crucial to LLMs in tool learning: format alignment, intent comprehension, behavior planning, tool selection, and answer organization. Additionally, ToolEyes incorporates a tool library boasting approximately 600 tools, serving as an intermediary between LLMs and the physical world. Evaluations involving ten LLMs across three categories reveal a preference for specific scenarios and limited cognitive abilities in tool learning. Intriguingly, expanding the model size even exacerbates the hindrance to tool learning. Bilateral Pricing for Dynamic Association in Federated Edge Learning

Devices and servers in Federated Edge Learning (FEL) are self-interested and resource-constrained, making it critical to design incentives to improve model performance. However, dynamic network conditions raise energy consumption, while data heterogeneity undermines device cooperation. Current research overlooks the interplay between system efficiency and device clustering, resulting in suboptimal updates. To address these challenges, we develop BENCH, a bilateral pricing mechanism consisting of three core rules aimed at incentivizing participation from both devices and servers. Specifically, we first design a reward allocation rule, based on the Rubinstein bargaining model, which dynamically allocates rewards. Theoretically, we derive a closed-form solution for this rule, demonstrating BENCH achieves Nash equilibrium. Secondly, we design a device partitioning rule that leverages modularity to group similar devices, facilitating personalized edge aggregation to accelerate local data adaptation. Thirdly, we design an edge matching rule that employs the Kuhn-Munkres algorithm to balance the load at edge servers, thus minimizing the congestion. Together, these three rules enable hierarchical optimization of pricing and associations, effectively mitigating the impact of dynamic costs and device heterogeneity. Extensive experiments demonstrate BENCH's effectiveness in increasing device participation by 28.81% and improving model performance by 2.66% compared to state-of-the-art baselines. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is revolutionizing the field of higher education by leveraging deep learning models to generate human-like content. However, the use of GenAI in education raises ethical concerns such as the potential impact on critical thinking skills and the unethical or dishonest use by students. This paper analyzed the main problems existing in engineering courses in Chinese universities firstly and then proposed corresponding teaching reform measures based on the comprehensive consideration of the benefits and threats of GenAI. Mitigating image defocus blur induced by the limited depth of field in imaging systems and reconstructing the three-dimensional depth of scenes represents a significant hurdle. In this paper, a method for enhancing defocus blur in three-dimensional scenes via high-speed optical axial scanning and deep learning was proposed. The optical axial scanning system functions by synchronizing a liquid electronically tunable lens and a CCD camera to capture multi-focus image sequences. The system efficiently captures real-world images with a fast acquisition time of ~50 ms per image. The multi-focus image sequences are then fused to all-in-focus images. The multi-focus images and all-in-focus images (ground truth) serve as the dataset for the deep learning neural network. Defocused images can be reconstructed using the trained deep learning network. Furthermore, by establishing a direct relationship between the focal depth and the driving current applied to the liquid electronically tunable lens, the three-dimensional depth of the scene can be rapidly determined. Experimental results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of this method. It is expected to expand the applications of image defocus enhancement in fields such as medical imaging, 3D shape measurement, and augmented reality. © 2025 SPIE.

Enhancing Network Abnormal Detection With NMF-SECNN: Leveraging Deep Feature Learning for High-Precision Traffic Analysis

Detection of abnormalities in industrial network traffic plays a crucial role in maintaining network system security. However, current abnormal detection models suffer from low precision, and extracting deep-level feature information from industrial network traffic is difficult. This leads to the loss of partial feature information during the detection process, thereby affecting detection efficiency. To address this issue, this paper proposes an abnormal traffic detection framework for industrial networks. By employing a Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF)-based method for extracting abnormal traffic features and optimizing the NMF decomposition process through constructing label consistency constraints, we facilitate effective feature extraction. Additionally, the Squeeze-and-Excitation attention mechanism is introduced into a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to construct a classifier that enhances detection precision without increasing complexity, enabling efficient identification of complex network traffic patterns. This results in the NMF-Squeeze-and-Excitation-CNN (NMF-SECNN) model, which combines effective feature extraction capability with a lightweight structural design, achieving superior detection performance in industrial network environments. The proposed method achieves a detection accuracy of 99.4%, representing a 5.6% improvement over baseline methods, and a recall rate of 98.2%, showcasing the model's capability to identify abnormalities across diverse scenarios. Various classification metrics confirm the model's robustness and effectiveness, demonstrating its significant advantages over traditional methods. © 2013 IEEE.
