Despite the enhanced spectral efficiency brought by the integrated radar and communication technique, it poses significant risks to communication security when confronted with malicious radar targets. To address this issue, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided transmission scheme is proposed to improve secure communication in two systems, i.e., the radar and communication co-existing (RCCE) system, where a single transmitter is utilized for both radar sensing and communication, and the dual-functional radar and communication (DFRC) system. At the design stage, optimization problems are formulated to maximize the secrecy rate while satisfying the radar detection constraint via joint active beamforming at the base station and passive beamforming of RIS in both systems. Particularly, a zero-forcing-based block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is developed for the RCCE system. Besides, the Dinkelbach method combined with semidefinite relaxation is employed for the DFRC system, and to further reduce the computational complexity, a Riemannian conjugate gradient-based alternating optimization algorithm is proposed. Moreover, the RIS-aided robust secure communication in the DFRC system is investigated by considering the eavesdropper's imperfect channel state information (CSI), where a bounded uncertainty model is adopted to capture the angle error and fading channel error of the eavesdropper, and a tractable bound for their joint uncertainty is derived. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the developed RIS-aided transmission scheme to improve the secrecy rate even with the eavesdropper's imperfect CSI, and comparisons between both systems reveal that the RCCE system can provide a higher secrecy rate than the DFRC system. Semantic Communication (SC) has emerged as a novel communication paradigm in recent years, successfully transcending the Shannon physical capacity limits through innovative semantic transmission concepts. Nevertheless, extant Image Semantic Communication (ISC) systems face several challenges in dynamic environments, including low semantic density, catastrophic forgetting, and uncertain signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). To address these challenges, we propose a novel Vision-Language Model-based Cross-modal Semantic Communication (VLM-CSC) system. The VLM-CSC comprises three novel components: (1) Cross-modal Knowledge Base (CKB) is used to extract high-density textual semantics from the semantically sparse image at the transmitter and reconstruct the original image based on textual semantics at the receiver. The transmission of high-density semantics contributes to alleviating bandwidth pressure. (2) Memory-assisted Encoder and Decoder (MED) employ a hybrid long/short-term memory mechanism, enabling the semantic encoder and decoder to overcome catastrophic forgetting in dynamic environments when there is a drift in the distribution of semantic features. (3) Noise Attention Module (NAM) employs attention mechanisms to adaptively adjust the semantic coding and the channel coding based on SNR, ensuring the robustness of the CSC system. This paper explores the size-invariance of evaluation metrics in Salient Object Detection (SOD), especially when multiple targets of diverse sizes co-exist in the same image. We observe that current metrics are size-sensitive, where larger objects are focused, and smaller ones tend to be ignored. We argue that the evaluation should be size-invariant because bias based on size is unjustified without additional semantic information. In pursuit of this, we propose a generic approach that evaluates each salient object separately and then combines the results, effectively alleviating the imbalance. We further develop an optimization framework tailored to this goal, achieving considerable improvements in detecting objects of different sizes. Theoretically, we provide evidence supporting the validity of our new metrics and present the generalization analysis of SOD. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Semantic communication (SC) is an emerging intelligent paradigm, offering solutions for various future applications like metaverse, mixed reality, and the Internet of Everything. However, in current SC systems, the construction of the knowledge base (KB) faces several issues, including limited knowledge representation, frequent knowledge updates, and insecure knowledge sharing. Fortunately, the development of the large AI model (LAM) provides new solutions to overcome the above issues. Here, we propose a LAM-based SC framework (LAM-SC) specifically designed for image data, where we first apply the segment anything model (SAM)-based KB (SKB) that can split the original image into different semantic segments by universal semantic knowledge. Then, we present an attention-based semantic integration (ASI) to weigh the semantic segments generated by SKB without human participation and integrate them as the semanticaware image. Additionally, we propose an adaptive semantic compression (ASC) encoding to remove redundant information in semantic features, thereby reducing communication overhead. Finally, through simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the LAM-SC framework and the possibility of applying the LAM-based KB in future SC paradigms. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. PUGAN: Physical Model-Guided Underwater Image Enhancement Using GAN with Dual-Discriminators

Due to the light absorption and scattering induced by the water medium, underwater images usually suffer from some degradation problems, such as low contrast, color distortion, and blurring details, which aggravate the difficulty of downstream underwater understanding tasks. Therefore, how to obtain clear and visually pleasant images has become a common concern of people, and the task of underwater image enhancement (UIE) has also emerged as the times require. Among existing UIE methods, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) based methods perform well in visual aesthetics, while the physical model-based methods have better scene adaptability. Inheriting the advantages of the above two types of models, we propose a physical model-guided GAN model for UIE in this paper, referred to as PUGAN. The entire network is under the GAN architecture. On the one hand, we design a Parameters Estimation subnetwork (Par-subnet) to learn the parameters for physical model inversion, and use the generated color enhancement image as auxiliary information for the Two-Stream Interaction Enhancement subnetwork (TSIE-subnet). Meanwhile, we design a Degradation Quantization (DQ) module in TSIE-subnet to quantize scene degradation, thereby achieving reinforcing enhancement of key regions. On the other hand, we design the Dual-Discriminators for the style-content adversarial constraint, promoting the authenticity and visual aesthetics of the results. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our PUGAN outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both qualitative and quantitative metrics. The Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory is widely used in many fields of information fusion. However, counter-intuitive results may be obtained by the classical Dempster combination rule when collected evidences are highly in conflict with each other. So an optimal weighted average information fusion method is proposed. Firstly, the global distance of the weighted evidence is presented based on the distance function. Secondly, the optimal weight of every evidence body was acquired by genetic algorithm, while the global distance is the minimum. Finally, the weighted average of the masses is combined by classical Dempster's rule. Compared with existing methods, the proposed optimal method can effectively handle conflicting evidence with better performance of convergence. A Learning Convolutional Neural Network Approach for Network Robustness Prediction

Network robustness is critical for various societal and industrial networks again malicious attacks. In particular, connectivity robustness and controllability robustness reflect how well a networked system can maintain its connectedness and controllability against destructive attacks, which can be quantified by a sequence of values that record the remaining connectivity and controllability of the network after a sequence of node- or edge-removal attacks. Traditionally, robustness is determined by attack simulations, which are computationally very time-consuming or even practically infeasible. In this paper, an improved method for network robustness prediction is developed based on learning feature representation using convolutional neural network (LFR-CNN). In this scheme, higher-dimensional network data are compressed to lower-dimensional representations, and then passed to a CNN to perform robustness prediction. Extensive experimental studies on both synthetic and real-world networks, both directed and undirected, demonstrate that 1) the proposed LFR-CNN performs better than other two state-of-the-art prediction methods, with significantly lower prediction errors;2) LFR-CNN is insensitive to the variation of the network size, which significantly extends its applicability;3) although LFR-CNN needs more time to perform feature learning, it can achieve accurate prediction faster than attack simulations;4) LFR-CNN not only can accurately predict network robustness, but also provides a good indicator for connectivity robustness, better than the classical spectral measures. © 2022, CC BY.

Stacked auto encoder based Deep Reinforcement Learning for online resource scheduling in large-scale MEC networks

An online resource scheduling framework is proposed for minimizing the sum of weighted task latency for all the mobile users, by optimizing offloading decision, transmission power, and resource allocation in the mobile edge computing (MEC) system. Towards this end, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method is proposed to obtain an online resource scheduling policy. Firstly, a related and regularized stacked auto encoder (2r-SAE) with unsupervised learning is proposed to perform data compression and representation for high dimensional channel quality information (CQI) data, which can reduce the state space for DRL. Secondly, we present an adaptive simulated annealing based approach (ASA) as the action search method of DRL, in which an adaptive h-mutation is used to guide the search direction and an adaptive iteration is proposed to enhance the search efficiency during the DRL process. Thirdly, a preserved and prioritized experience replay (2p-ER) is introduced to assist the DRL to train the policy network and find the optimal offloading policy. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance while significantly decreasing the computational time compared with existing benchmarks. It also shows that the proposed framework is suitable for resource scheduling problem in large-scale MEC networks, especially in the dynamic environment. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Cancer, as a global epidemic disease, remains a significant threat to human life and health. Prevention and early diagnosis are widely recognized as effective ways to tackle cancer. With the development of big data technology, many data-driven cancer diagnosis models have been proposed. However, the accuracy and generalization ability of existing models often fail to meet practical application needs. In order to address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel and improved protocol for high-precision pan-cancer diagnosis based on five publicly available cancer datasets from the UCI database and Kaggle, covering different cancer types such as breast, lung, and glioma. To achieve feature subset selection and hyperparameter optimization, we first introduce the nutcracker optimization algorithm (NOA), and improve it by using a multi-strategy method (MSNOA) to enhance optimization performance and efficiency. In the comparative experiment phase, we compare several popular machine learning models and identify MSNOA-CatBoost as the proposed model. The experimental results show that MSNOA-CatBoost improves the accuracy of the five datasets by an average of 9.12% compared to the baseline optimal model, and outperforms existing models in terms of performance. In summary, this study presents a promising approach to achieving high-precision pan-cancer diagnosis by leveraging the power of big data and advanced machine learning techniques. The proposed MSNOA-CatBoost model shows remarkable performance improvement over existing models, and has the potential to be applied in clinical practice for cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. © 2024, The Authors.
