The Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) is a well-known metric for evaluating instance-level long-tail learning problems. In the past two decades, many AUC optimization methods have been proposed to improve model performance under long-tail distributions. In this paper, we explore AUC optimization methods in the context of pixel-level long-tail semantic segmentation, a much more complicated scenario. This task introduces two major challenges for AUC optimization techniques. On one hand, AUC optimization in a pixel-level task involves complex coupling across loss terms, with structured inner-image and pairwise inter-image dependencies, complicating theoretical analysis. On the other hand, we find that mini-batch estimation of AUC loss in this case requires a larger batch size, resulting in an unaffordable space complexity. To address these issues, we develop a pixel-level AUC loss function and conduct a dependency-graph-based theoretical analysis of the algorithm’s generalization ability. Additionally, we design a Tail-Classes Memory Bank (T-Memory Bank) to manage the significant memory demand. Finally, comprehensive experiments across various benchmarks confirm the effectiveness of our proposed AUCSeg method. The code is available at https://***/boyuh/AUCSeg. © 2024, CC BY.

AMHF-TP: Multifunctional therapeutic peptides prediction based on multi-granularity hierarchical features

Multifunctional therapeutic peptides(MFTP) hold immense potential in diverse therapeutic contexts, yet their prediction and identification remain challenging due to the limitations of traditional methodologies, such as extensive training durations, limited sample sizes, and inadequate generalization capabilities. To address these issues, we present AMHF-TP, an advanced method for MFTP recognition that utilizes attention mechanisms and multi-granularity hierarchical features to enhance performance. The AMHF-TP is composed of four key components: a migration learning module that leverages pretrained models to extract atomic compositional features of MFTP sequences; a convolutional neural network and selfattention module that refine feature extraction from amino acid sequences and their secondary structures; a hypergraph module that constructs a hypergraph for complex similarity representation between MFTP sequences; and a hierarchical feature extraction module that integrates multimodal peptide sequence features. Compared with leading methods,the proposed AMHF-TP demonstrates superior precision, accuracy, and coverage, underscoring its effectiveness and robustness in MFTP recognition. The comparative analysis of separate hierarchical models and the combined model, as well as with five contemporary models, reveals AMHF-TP's exceptional performance and stability in recognition tasks.

Dual-axial self-attention network for text classification

Text classification is an important task in natural language processing and numerous studies aim to improve the accuracy and efficiency of text classification models. In this study, we propose an effective and efficient text classification model which is based on self-attention solely. The recently proposed multidimensional self-attention significantly improved the performance of self-attention. However, existing models suffer from two major limitations:(1) the previous multi-dimensional self-attention models are quite timeconsuming;(2) the dependencies of elements along the feature axis are not taken into account. To overcome these problems, in this paper, a much more computational efficient multi-dimensional self-attention model is proposed, and two parallel self-attention modules, called dual-axial self-attention, are applied to capture rich dependencies along the feature axis as well as the text axis. A text classification model is then *** experimental results on eight representative datasets show that the proposed text classification model can obtain state-of-the-art results and the proposed self-attention outperforms conventional self-attention models.

Reversible Data Hiding with Flexible Extraction for Thumbnail-Preserving Encryption

Storing images in the cloud not only facilitates consumers management of their images, but also alleviates the storage burden on local consumer electronic devices, a convenience that often comes at the expense of privacy. Traditional image encryption protects image privacy from disclosure, but sacrifices the visual usability of the images. Thumbnail-preserving encryption (TPE) is a recently proposed encryption scheme that harmonizes the privacy and usability of images. However, most existing TPE schemes ignored the non-visual usability of the images, i.e., the ability to embed additional information into the TPE images, which resulted in insufficient usability of the TPE images. To this end, we propose a TPE scheme for flexible extraction of reversible data hiding (RDH), which utilizes the histogram shifting technique to achieve embedding and lossless extraction of information at different stages before and after permutation encryption. Importantly, the encrypted image can be recovered losslessly. Meanwhile, we integrate a chaotic system into the encryption and decryption processes, thereby significantly reducing computational time and enhancing overall efficiency. Experiments show that our proposed scheme not only embeds additional information in TPE images, but also recovers the original images losslessly. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, AI technology has been widely applied in various industries, including education. In English teaching, AI technology provides teachers with objective and instructive feedback, offers students a more personalized learning experience, helping them improve their English language skills, etc., and brings new development opportunities and challenges to English teaching as well. However, there are still some problems that need to be solved in college English teaching in our university. For this reason, based on the application of AI technology in college English teaching, this paper mainly explores the impact and application countermeasures of AI on college English teaching from the following four aspects: individuals with differences, teaching management, classroom teaching and teaching evaluation. The identification of disease modules has attracted increasing attention due to the importance in comprehending pathogenesis of complex diseases. Most of the existing methods were based on the protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks with the incompleteness and incorrectness of the interactome, which results in many disease-related proteins and pathways not within their disease modules. In this paper, we propose a method named IDMCSS to effectively identify disease modules by adding some potential interactions and removing some incorrect interactions in the existing human PPI network. Firstly, the connective similarity and semantic similarity are calculated between the known disease proteins and each of their neighbors. Then, the network is adjusted by adding the interactions with large connective and semantic similarity, and removing those with small connective and semantic similarity. Further, the proteins are sorted in the descending order according to the similarity to the known disease proteins, and the sorted proteins are added into a candidate node set one by one until a certain biological information is not enriched in the candidate node set. Finally, the connected subnetwork with the largest number of nodes in the candidate node set is selected as the disease module. The disease modules identified by IDMCSS involve crucial biological processes of related diseases and can predict 12 targets for drug intervention. The experimental results on asthma demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison to existing algorithms for disease module identification. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Community detection is widely used in network analysis, which seeks to divide network nodes into distinct communities based on the topology structure and attribute information of the network. Due to its interpretability, nonnegative matrix factorization becomes an essential method for community detection. However, it decomposes the adjacency matrix and attribute matrix separately, which do not tightly incorporate topology and attributes. And in the problem of division inconsistency based on topology and attributes caused by the mismatch between the topology similarity and attribute similarity of paired nodes, it ignores the difference in the matching degree of each attribute and each node. In this paper, we propose a nonnegative matrix factorization algorithm for community detection (MTACD) based on the matching degree between topology and attribute. First, we employ an attribute embedding mechanism to enhance the node-attribute relationship. Second, we design an attribute matching degree and a node topology-and-attribute matching degree in order to resolve the mismatch between topology and attribute similarity. Speech-to-text translation (ST) is a cross-modal task that involves converting spoken language into text in a different language. Previous research primarily focused on enhancing speech translation by facilitating knowledge transfer from machine translation, exploring various methods to bridge the gap between speech and text modalities. Despite substantial progress made, factors in speech that are not relevant to translation content, such as timbre and rhythm, often limit the efficiency of knowledge transfer. In this paper, we conceptualize speech representation as a combination of content-agnostic and content-relevant factors. We examine the impact of content-agnostic factors on translation performance through preliminary experiments and observe a significant performance deterioration when content-agnostic perturbations are introduced to speech signals. To address this issue, we propose a Speech Representation Purification with Supervision Enhancement (SRPSE) framework, which excludes the content-agnostic components within speech representations to mitigate their negative impact on ST. Experiments on MuST-C and CoVoST-2 datasets demonstrate that SRPSE significantly improves translation performance across all translation directions in three settings and achieves preeminent performance under a transcript-free setting. Global climate change leads to increasing frequency and severity of urban flood disasters, which restricts human sustainable development. So far, many studies have explored the potential of fusing remote sensing images and social media data for monitoring urban flood disasters. However, the SAR flooded characteristics of different land cover in complex urban environment are generally ignored. In this paper, we develop a new method for the fusion of heterogeneous SAR images and social media data by using domain adaptation and land cover information. The 2017 Houston flood event is taken as a case study for evaluation. According to our experiments, compared with traditional methods of optimal transport and geographic optimal transport, the proposed method can align the geo-tagged tweets with location uncertainty to nearby flooded areas of low-, medium-, and high-intensity developed areas with more remarkable performance.
