Federated Learning (FL) mitigates privacy leakage in decentralized machine learning by allowing multiple clients to train collaboratively locally. However, dynamic mobile networks with high mobility, intermittent connectivity, and bandwidth limitation severely hinder model updates to the cloud server. Although previous studies have typically addressed user mobility issue through task reassignment or predictive modeling, frequent migrations may result in high communication overhead. Addressing this challenge involves not only dealing with resource constraints, but also finding ways to mitigate the challenges posed by user migrations. We therefore propose an intertemporal incentive framework, FedCross, which ensures the continuity of FL tasks by migrating interrupted training tasks to feasible mobile devices. Specifically, FedCross comprises two distinct stages. In Stage 1, we address the task allocation problem across regions under resource constraints by employing a multi-objective migration algorithm to quantify the optimal task receivers. Moreover, we adopt evolutionary game theory to capture the dynamic decision-making of users, forecasting the evolution of user proportions across different regions to mitigate frequent migrations. In Stage 2, we utilize a procurement auction mechanism to allocate rewards among base stations, ensuring that those providing high-quality models receive optimal compensation. This approach incentivizes sustained user participation, thereby ensuring the overall feasibility of FedCross. Finally, experimental results validate the theoretical soundness of FedCross and demonstrate its significant reduction in communication overhead. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this work, we propose a no-reference image quality evaluation approach, aiming to solve the problem that the traditional convolutional neural network is insufficient to express the global information of the image. Therefore, in order to make the captured image features have the coherence of global context information, we combine a Transformer structure widely used in NLP (natural language processing) with the traditional CNN to realize the attention mechanism in the human visual perception characteristics. Firstly, the self-attention mechanism of Transformer is used to learn the global representation of the image from the multi-layer features extracted from different levels of CNN. Additionally, to forecast the ultimate image quality score, the global and local attributes are combined. Finally, the proposed algorithm is evaluated on three public datasets commonly used in CSIQ [1], TID2013 [2] and LIVE [3]. Compared with eight traditional no-reference image quality evaluation algorithms and five methods based on deep learning, the proposed algorithm achieves competitive results.

Community detection is a trendy area in research on complex network analysis and has a wide range of real-world applications, like advertising. As people become increasingly concerned about privacy, protecting participants’ privacy in distributed community detection has become a new challenge. When applied to not identically and independently distributed (Non-IID) data, most federated graph algorithms suffer from the weight divergence problem caused by diversified training of local and global models, resulting in accuracy degradation. Furthermore, the privacy protection approaches based on anonymization, such as differential privacy (DP), and cryptography, such as homomorphic encryption (HE), incur accuracy loss and high time consumption, respectively. In this paper, we propose a globally consistent vertical federated graph autoencoder (GCVFGAE) algorithm, which builds a globally consistent model among the coordinator and all participants to solve the Non-IID graph data problem. As well, an attribute blinding strategy based on security aggregation is developed to protect the network privacy of each participant without losing accuracy. Both real-world and artificial networks’ experiments show that our algorithm reaches higher accuracy than the existing vertical federated graph neural networks (GNNs) and the simple distributed graph autoencoder without federated learning and detects communities identical to those found by the standard graph autoencoder (GAE). © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Inspired by the fact that the matrix formulated by nonlocal similar patches in a natural image is of low rank, the rank approximation issue have been extensively investigated over the past decades, among which weighted nuclear norm minimization (WNNM) and weighted Schatten p-norm minimization (WSNM) are two prevailing methods have shown great superiority in various image restoration (IR) problems. Due to the physical characteristic of color images, color image restoration (CIR) is often a much more difficult task than its grayscale image counterpart. However, when applied to CIR, the traditional WNNM/WSNM method only processes three color channels individually and fails to consider their cross-channel correlations. Very recently, a quaternion-based WNNM approach (QWNNM) has been developed to mitigate this issue, which is capable of representing the color image as a whole in the quaternion domain and preserving the inherent correlation among the three color channels. Despite its empirical success, unfortunately, the convergence behavior of QWNNM has not been strictly studied yet. In this paper, on the one side, we extend the WSNM into quaternion domain and correspondingly propose a novel quaternion-based WSNM model (QWSNM) for tackling the CIR problems. Extensive experiments on two representative CIR tasks, including color image denoising and deblurring, demonstrate that the proposed QWSNM method performs favorably against many state-of-the-art alternatives, in both quantitative and qualitative evaluations. On the other side, more importantly, we preliminarily provide a theoretical convergence analysis, that is, by modifying the quaternion alternating direction method of multipliers (QADMM) through a simple continuation strategy, we theoretically prove that both the solution sequences generated by the QWNNM and QWSNM have fixed-point convergence guarantees. Federated graph learning has been widely used in distributed graph machine learning tasks. The data distribution of existing graph-based federated Spatio-temporal prediction methods is mainly segmented by graph topology. However, in the real-world Spatio-temporal traffic speed prediction task, a location will have data from different devices belonging to different companies. A node may have multi-party information in the real-world distributed traffic speed prediction scenario. The difference in multi-party information leads to the information not being fully utilized. Moreover, the direct transmission of node embedding in the federated learning process may also risk privacy leaks. Using homomorphic encryption and other encryption methods will bring a high computational overhead. Therefore we propose a new distributed privacy-preserving traffic speed prediction algorithm, which uses secure node attribute aggregation strategy(SNAAS) to apply to the multi-party collaborative traffic speed prediction scenario when the graph topology structure is public. At the same time, secret sharing technology is used in SNAAS to protect the attribute matrix and reduce the overhead of secret computing. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

TRAIL: Trust-Aware Client Scheduling for Semi-Decentralized Federated Learning

Due to the sensitivity of data, Federated Learning (FL) is employed to enable distributed machine learning while safeguarding data privacy and accommodating the requirements of various devices. However, in the context of semidecentralized FL, clients' communication and training states are dynamic. This variability arises from local training fluctuations, heterogeneous data distributions, and intermittent client participation. Most existing studies primarily focus on stable client states, neglecting the dynamic challenges inherent in real-world scenarios. To tackle this issue, we propose a TRust-Aware clIent scheduLing mechanism called TRAIL, which assesses client states and contributions, enhancing model training efficiency through selective client participation. We focus on a semi-decentralized FL framework where edge servers and clients train a shared global model using unreliable intra-cluster model aggregation and inter-cluster model consensus. First, we propose an adaptive hidden semi- Markov model to estimate clients' communication states and contributions. Next, we address a client-server association optimization problem to minimize global training loss. Using convergence analysis, we propose a greedy client scheduling algorithm. Finally, our experiments conducted on real-world datasets demonstrate that TRAIL outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, achieving an improvement of 8.7% in test accuracy and a reduction of 15.3% in training loss. © 2024, CC BY.

RGB and thermal source data suffer from both shared and specific challenges, and how to explore and exploit them plays a critical role to represent the target appearance in RGBT tracking. In this paper, we propose a novel challenge-aware neural network to handle the modality-shared challenges (e.g., fast motion, scale variation and occlusion) and the modality-specific ones (e.g., illumination variation and thermal crossover) for RGBT tracking. In particular, we design several parameter-shared branches in each layer to model the target appearance under the modality-shared challenges, and several parameter-independent branches under the modality-specific ones. Based on the observation that the modality-specific cues of different modalities usually contains the complementary advantages, we propose a guidance module to transfer discriminative features from one modality to another one, which could enhance the discriminative ability of some weak modality. Moreover, all branches are aggregated together in an adaptive manner and parallel embedded in the backbone network to efficiently form more discriminative target representations. These challenge-aware branches are able to model the target appearance under certain challenges so that the target representations can be learnt by a few parameters even in the situation of insufficient training data. From the experimental results we will show that our method operates at a real-time speed while performing well against the state-of-the-art methods on three benchmark datasets. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In recent years, microfluidic biochips have been widely applied in various fields of human society. The emergence of distributed channel-storage architecture enables fluid to be directly cached within the flow channels without being transported to the dedicated storage. However, the volume of the flow channels is limited, it is important to carefully consider the fluid volume to be cached to ensure it can be accommodated within the appropriate flow channels. In this paper, we propose a high-level synthesis method considering actual volume management and channel storage through integer linear programming, providing a rational analysis of fluid caching and the temporal relationships between different fluid-handling tasks. Experimental results conducted on multiple benchmark tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in reducing the completion time of bioassay, the number of caches, the maximum fluid caching volume, and the number of fluid-handling tasks.

Existing single-modal and multi-modal salient object detection (SOD) methods focus on designing specific architectures tailored for their respective tasks. However, developing completely different models for different tasks leads to labor and time consumption, as well as high computational and practical deployment costs. In this paper, we attempt to address both single-modal and multi-modal SOD in a unified framework called UniSOD, which fully exploits the overlapping prior knowledge between different tasks. Nevertheless, assigning appropriate strategies to modality variable inputs is challenging. To this end, UniSOD learns modality-aware prompts with task-specific hints through adaptive prompt learning, which are plugged into the proposed pre-trained baseline SOD model to handle corresponding tasks, while only requiring few learnable parameters compared to training the entire model. Each modality-aware prompt is generated from a switchable prompt generation block, which adaptively performs structural switching based on single-modal and multi-modal inputs without human intervention. Through end-to-end joint training, UniSOD achieves overall performance improvement on 14 benchmark datasets for RGB, RGB-D, and RGB-T SOD, which demonstrates that our method effectively and efficiently unifies single-modal and multi-modal SOD tasks. According to the miniaturization characteristics of step impedance resonators, a step impedance bandpass filter with a center frequency of 16.55 GHz and a bandwidth of 500MHz is designed. The effects of parameter changes such as substrate resistivity and the shape of metal via etching on the performance of the filter are studied. Finally, the filter is fabricated and its performance is tested under MEMS technology.
