Policy gradient methods are one of the most successful methods for solving challenging reinforcement learning problems. However, despite their empirical successes, many SOTA policy gradient algorithms for discounted problems deviate from the theoretical policy gradient theorem due to the existence of a distribution mismatch. In this work, we analyze the impact of this mismatch on the policy gradient methods. Specifically, we first show that in the case of tabular parameterizations, the methods under the mismatch remain globally optimal. Then, we extend this analysis to more general parameterizations by leveraging the theory of biased stochastic gradient descent. Our findings offer new insights into the robustness of policy gradient methods as well as the gap between theoretical foundations and practical implementations. © 2025, CC BY.

In vehicular networks, caching service content on edge servers (ESs) is a widely accepted strategy for promptly responding to vehicle requests, reducing communication overhead, and improving service experience. However, implementing such an architecture requires addressing the challenges associated with ES response data reliability and communication security. In this study, to tackle the ES response data reliability issue, a blockchain-assisted threshold signature scheme for cache-based vehicular networks is proposed. The scheme utilizes a threshold mechanism to sign the data broadcast by the ES, incorporates blockchain to trace malicious signers, and avoids the shortcomings and limitations associated with idealized assumptions for the ES in existing data-sharing schemes. Moreover, considering the communication security and high-speed mobility of vehicles, using the non-interactive signatures of knowledge based on the Σ-protocol, a secure and efficient message authentication scheme for vehicles and ESs is provided. Through rigorous security proofs and comprehensive analyses, our scheme satisfies the communication security requirements of vehicular networks. By leveraging the JPBC library for performance analysis, the proposed scheme demonstrates advantages as concerns both computation and communication overheads compared to related schemes. Moreover, we implemented the proposed scheme on an Ethereum test network (i.e., Goerli) to validate its feasibility. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

Centrality measures are essential for identifying important nodes and edges in networks. In this paper, we focus on two forest-based centrality measures on undirected graphs: forest node centrality (FNC) and forest edge centrality (FEC), which capture the influence of nodes and edges through their participation in spanning forests. Both centrality measures can be represented using entries of the forest matrix. To address the challenge of computing the two measures on large networks, we propose two scalable algorithms from different perspectives. The first algorithm IFGN combines two variance reduction techniques to approximate the entries of the forest matrix, applicable to both FNC and FEC. The second algorithm FECE incorporates a new physical interpretation of FEC, allowing for a better overall estimation. We provide error guarantees for both algorithms and demonstrate their efficiency and effectiveness through extensive experiments on various real-world networks. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) provides important insights into the metabolic mechanisms of different biological processes. Although PPIs in some organisms have been investigated systematically, PPIs in the ocean archaea remain largely unexplored. But such species have special investigation value since their adaptation to extreme living conditions may generate unique PPIs. In this paper, we aim to characterize and predict PPIs in ocean archaea to advance understanding of their metabolic networks. First, we collect all ocean archaea PPIs with high confidence from STRING database and analyze the PPI network features, including centrality and enrichment analysis. The functional enrichment results of the largest connecting subgraph in the PPI network show most PPIs in our constructed dataset is related to the translation and transcription processes. Then, we generate an equal number of negative PPI pairs, whose members have either different subcellular locations or GO terms. We also use the generated dataset to test the performance of three pretraining methods and their ensemble methods in the binary PPI prediction task. Our results suggest the ensemble methods could be applied to further improve models’ performance. Fine-tuned models trained on the ocean archaea dataset are expected to predict the other ocean archaea PPIs that are not included in the STRING database and get more understanding about the ocean archaea PPI universe.

This work investigates the potential of exploiting movable antennas (MAs) to enhance the performance of a multiuser downlink integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. Specifically, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the transmit beampattern gain for sensing while simultaneously meeting each user’s communication requirement by jointly optimizing antenna positions and beamforming design. The problem formulated is highly non-convex and involves multivariate-coupled constraints. To address these challenges, we introduce a series of auxiliary random variables and transform the original problem into an augmented Lagrangian problem. A double-loop algorithm based on a penalty dual decomposition framework is then developed to solve the problem. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed design, demonstrating its superiority over MA designs based on successive convex approximation optimization and other baseline approaches in ISAC systems. The results also highlight the advantages of MAs in achieving better sensing performance and improved beam control, especially for sparse arrays with large apertures. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Video-based person re-identification (ReID) has become increasingly important due to its applications in video surveillance applications. By employing events in video-based person ReID, more motion information can be provided between continuous frames to improve recognition accuracy. Previous approaches have assisted by introducing event data into the video person ReID task, but they still cannot avoid the privacy leakage problem caused by RGB images. In order to avoid privacy attacks and to take advantage of the benefits of event data, we consider using only event data. To make full use of the information in the event stream, we propose a Cross-Modality and Temporal Collaboration (CMTC) network for event-based video person ReID. First, we design an event transform network to obtain corresponding auxiliary information from the input of raw events. Additionally, we propose a differential modality collaboration module to balance the roles of events and auxiliaries to achieve complementary effects. Furthermore, we introduce a temporal collaboration module to exploit motion information and appearance cues. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms others in the task of event-based video person ReID.

In this paper, we present a novel yet intuitive unsupervised feature learning approach, referred to as Minimizing Interframe Differences (MID). The idea is the following: as long as the unsupervised features successfully encode the essential information about the visual structures of the frames, the differences between the before and after frames can be minimally encoded. MID is implemented with a difference encoding module and a frame reconstruction module. The former tries to minimize the difference between frames, while the latter first maps the difference encoding to optical flow and then realizes frame reconstruction based on the learned optical flow. All the modules are jointly learned in an end-to-end way through the reconstruction loss. We verify the feasibility of MID in the image datasets by replacing the natural transformation of videos to artificially parameterized transformation for images. Experimental results show that MID is able to predict optical flow accurately based on the minimum difference coding and learn a powerful visual representation that greatly enhances other visual tasks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Global contextual dependency is of significance for semantic segmentation from light fields. However, previous works mostly exploit attention mechanisms to model spatial context dependency and angular context dependency separately, since a light field capture is very data-intensive. Considering that self-attention is resource-consuming, existing methods only use it to capture spatial contextual dependency for the central view of light fields, and employ resource-efficient attention mechanisms to model angular view dependencies instead. Inspired by the recent success of State Space Sequence model (SSM), we present a novel SSM-based encoder for light field semantic segmentation, which models spatio-angular contextual dependency together. The proposed method is evaluated on the existing light field semantic segmentation datasets, and experimental results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods. Cross-view object geo-localization (CVOGL) aims to locate an object of interest in a captured ground- or drone-view image within the satellite image. However, existing works treat ground-view and drone-view query images equivalently, overlooking their inherent viewpoint discrepancies and the spatial correlation between the query image and the satellite-view reference image. To this end, this paper proposes a novel View-specific Attention Geo-localization method (VAGeo) for accurate CVOGL. Specifically, VAGeo contains two key modules: view-specific positional encoding (VSPE) module and channel-spatial hybrid attention (CSHA) module. In object-level, according to the characteristics of different viewpoints of ground and drone query images, viewpoint-specific positional codings are designed to more accurately identify the click-point object of the query image in the VSPE module. In feature-level, a hybrid attention in the CSHA module is introduced by combining channel attention and spatial attention mechanisms simultaneously for learning discriminative features. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed VAGeo gains a significant performance improvement, i.e., improving acc@0.25/acc@0.5 on the CVOGL dataset from 45.43%/42.24% to 48.21%/45.22% for ground-view, and from 61.97%/57.66% to 66.19%/61.87% for drone-view.

Feature selection is critical for enhancing data processing efficiency and decision accuracy. In multi-scale decision information systems, a novel hypergraph-based feature selection method is proposed to address the challenge of selecting the optimal scale combination from multi-scale features. An adjacency relationship matrix is defined to induce a hypergraph, which visualizes the relationships among multi-scale features and transforms the feature selection problem into a minimal vertex cover problem within the hypergraph. This approach facilitates the selection of the optimal scale feature subset. Additionally, the algorithm incorporates a priority queue to manage the sorting of features, significantly reducing time complexity and improving solution efficiency. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
