Continual Semantic Segmentation (CSS) aims to continuously learn new classes while mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Existing CSS methods primarily address this challenge through knowledge distillation. While they focus on maintaining stability for old classes, this emphasis often restricts plasticity in learning new ones. In this work, we propose two plug-and-play methods to better balance stability and plasticity. First, for feature map distillation, we replace pixel-level constraints with statistical information extraction within a window, improving the learning of new classes while preserving structural integrity to overcome forgetting. Second, we use relative ranks of predictions to replace exact probabilistic values to loosen the constraints in the logit distribution of old classes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our methods outperform state-of-the-art methods when integrating into several baselines across various CSS scenarios.

Feature selection is critical for enhancing data processing efficiency and decision accuracy. In multi-scale decision information systems, a novel hypergraph-based feature selection method is proposed to address the challenge of selecting the optimal scale combination from multi-scale features. An adjacency relationship matrix is defined to induce a hypergraph, which visualizes the relationships among multi-scale features and transforms the feature selection problem into a minimal vertex cover problem within the hypergraph. This approach facilitates the selection of the optimal scale feature subset. Additionally, the algorithm incorporates a priority queue to manage the sorting of features, significantly reducing time complexity and improving solution efficiency. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

EMF-GAN:Efficient Multilayer Fusion GAN for text-to-image synthesis

Text-to-image generation is a challenging and significant research task. It aims to synthesize high-quality images that match the given descriptive statements. Existing methods still have problems in generating semantic information fusion insufficiently, and the generated images cannot represent the descriptive statements properly. Therefore, A novel method named EMF-GAN (Efficient Multilayer Fusion Generative Adversarial Network) is proposed. It uses a Multilayer Fusion Module (MF Module) and Efficient Multi-Scale Attention Module (EMA Module) to fuse the semantic information into the feature maps gradually. It realizes the full utilization of the semantic information and obtains high-quality realistic images. Extensive experimental results show that our EMF-GAN is highly competitive in image generation quality and semantic consistency. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, EMF-GAN shows significant performance improvement on both CUB (FID from 14.81 to 10.74) and COCO (FID from 19.32 to 16.86) datasets. ColorDynamic: Generalizable, Scalable, Real-time, End-to-end Local Planner for Unstructured and Dynamic Environments

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has demonstrated potential in addressing robotic local planning problems, yet its efficacy remains constrained in highly unstructured and dynamic environments. To address these challenges, this study proposes the ColorDynamic framework. First, an end-to-end DRL formulation is established, which maps raw sensor data directly to control commands, thereby ensuring compatibility with unstructured environments. Under this formulation, a novel network, Transqer, is introduced. The Transqer enables online DRL learning from temporal transitions, substantially enhancing decision-making in dynamic scenarios. To facilitate scalable training of Transqer with diverse data, an efficient simulation platform E-Sparrow, along with a data augmentation technique leveraging symmetric invariance, are developed. Comparative evaluations against state-of-the-art methods, alongside assessments of generalizability, scalability, and real-time performance, were conducted to validate the effectiveness of ColorDynamic. Results indicate that our approach achieves a success rate exceeding 90% while exhibiting real-time capacity (1.2–1.3 ms per planning). Additionally, ablation studies were performed to corroborate the contributions of individual components. Building on this, the OkayPlan-ColorDynamic (OPCD) navigation system is presented, with simulated and real-world experiments demonstrating its superiority and applicability in complex scenarios. Kernel-learning parameter prediction and evaluation in algebraic multigrid method for several PDEs

This paper explores the application of kernel learning methods for parameter prediction and evaluation in the Algebraic Multigrid Method (AMG), focusing on several Partial Differential Equation (PDE) problems. AMG is an efficient iterative solver for large-scale sparse linear systems, particularly those derived from elliptic and parabolic PDE discretizations. However, its performance heavily relies on numerous parameters, which are often set empirically and are highly sensitive to AMG’s effectiveness. Traditional parameter optimization methods are either computationally expensive or lack theoretical support. To address this, we propose a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR)-based strategy to optimize AMG parameters and introduce evaluation metrics to assess their effectiveness. Trained on small-scale datasets, GPR predicts nearly optimal parameters, bypassing the time-consuming parameter sweeping process. We also use kernel learning techniques to build a kernel function library and determine the optimal kernel function through linear combination, enhancing prediction accuracy. In numerical experiments, we tested typical PDEs such as the constant-coefficient Poisson equation, variable-coefficient Poisson equation, diffusion equation, and Helmholtz equation. Results show that GPR-predicted parameters match grid search results in iteration counts while significantly reducing computational time. A comprehensive analysis using metrics like mean squared error, prediction interval coverage, and Bayesian information criterion confirms GPR’s efficiency and reliability. These findings validate GPR’s effectiveness in AMG parameter optimization and provide theoretical support for AMG’s practical application. © 2025, CC BY.

STFF: Spatio-Temporal and Frequency Fusion for Video Compression Artifact Removal

Video compression artifact removal focuses on enhancing the visual quality of compressed videos by mitigating visual distortions. However, existing methods often struggle to effectively capture spatio-temporal features and recover high-frequency details, due to their suboptimal adaptation to the characteristics of compression artifacts. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel Spatio-Temporal and Frequency Fusion (STFF) framework. STFF incorporates three key components: Feature Extraction and Alignment (FEA), which employs SRU for effective spatiotemporal feature extraction;Bidirectional High-Frequency Enhanced Propagation (BHFEP), which integrates HCAB to restore high-frequency details through bidirectional propagation;and Residual High-Frequency Refinement (RHFR), which further enhances high-frequency information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that STFF achieves superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods in both objective metrics and subjective visual quality, effectively addressing the challenges posed by video compression artifacts. © 1963-12012 IEEE.

The natural curcumin-mediated photodynamic inactivation(PDI)was developed,and its inactivation potency against Fusarium graminearum in vitro and in vivo was systematically investigated by fluorescence probe assay,trypan blue staining,scanning electron microscope(SEM),confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM),*** showed that under the irradiation of blue LED,the photosensitizer of curcumin was excited to generate massive reactive oxygen species(ROS)in the cells of ***,and the PDI completely inactivated their mycelia and spores under the treatment of 150μM curcumin and 10.8 J/cm^(2)*** analysis found that the PDI ruptured the cellular microstructures,damaged the cell membrane by increasing its permeability and oxidizing the lipids,degraded the intracellular DNA and proteins inside the spores of ***,the PDI also potently killed>99.99%spores of *** on maize under the treatment of 200μM curcumin and 10.8 J/cm^(2)***,the PDI suppressed the production of zearalenone(ZEN),and residual ZEN could not be detected after the storage of maize for 10 ***,this study systematically explored the inactivation efficiency of curcumin-mediated PDI against both the mycelia and spores of ***,which provides a valid and promising method to control the fungal hazards in grains.

Cross-Modal Haptic Compression Inspired by Embodied AI for Haptic Communications

Haptic data compression has gradually become a key issue for emerging real-time haptic communications in Tactile Internet (TI). However, it is challenging to achieve a tradeoff between high perceptual quality and compression ratio in haptic data compression scheme. Inspired by the perspective of embodied AI, we propose a cross-modal haptic compression scheme for haptic communications to improve the perception quality on TI devices in this paper. Since multimodal fusion is routinely employed to improve the ability of system in cognition, we assume that haptic codec is guided by visual semantics to optimize parameter settings in the coding process. We first design a multi-dimensional tactile feature fusion network (MTFFN) relying on multi-head attention mechanism. The MTFFN extracts the multi-dimensional features from the material surface and maps them to infer the coding parameters. Secondly, we provide second-order difference and linear interpolation to establish an criterion for the determination of optimal codec parameters, which are customized by the material categories so as to give high robustness. Finally, the simulation results reveal that our compression scheme can efficiently make a personalized codec procedure for different materials, obtaining more than 17% improvement in terms of compression ratio with high perceptual quality at the same time. © 2025 IEEE.

Robust Self-Localization of Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks

Wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASNs), or the so-called internet of audio things (IoAuTs), have attracted increasing attention in the IoT community. As the geometry structure of WASNs is required in audio/speech processing tasks like source localization or acoustic beamforming, automatic self-localization of sensors is necessary. However, most of the existing approaches suffer from poor stability, as their constructed cost functions involve non-convex programming. To address this issue, we investigate the robust self-localization (or geometry calibration) of WASNs in this paper. Specifically, a rough self-localization (RSL) method is first presented based on measurements including time-difference-of-arrivals (TDoAs), direction-of-arrivals (DoA), and energy-rates (ERs), and its closed-form solution is further derived. As ER estimates are sensitive to acoustic environments, the performance of the RSL method is somewhat limited. Therefore, a precise self-localization (PSL) method is then developed by building a weighted (and non-convex) TDoA-DoA cost function, after regarding the RSL approach as an initialization step. As the RSL offers better initial values compared with existing initialization strategies, the combination of RSL and PSL methods (named as RSL-PSL method) shows stronger robustness and stability. In addition, computational complexity of both RSL and PSL methods are analyzed in details. Finally, the Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) of the PSL method is derived to show its theoretical lower bound. The proposed RSL-PSL method outperforms the state-of-the-arts in terms of stability and accuracy, which is confirmed by numerical real-world and simulation experiments. © 2014 IEEE.
