The k-means method is widely utilized for clustering. Its simplicity, efficacy, and swiftness make it a favored choice among clustering algorithms. It faces the challenge of sensitivity to the initial class center. The enhancement strategy for the k-means algorithm focuses on refining the initial selection of cluster centroids, no longer using its random selection of initial class center points, but starting from the entire dataset, choosing the most distant point to serve as the starting cluster centroid. This can also prevent the local optimization problem of the k-means algorithm. The improved algorithm proposed in this article is an effective method that can select the initial class center point from a global perspective and reduce computation time. The suggested approach has undergone rigorous testing and comparative analysis across multiple datasets, yielding commendable outcomes. © 2025 IEEE.

Recently, many compression algorithms are applied to decrease the cost of video storage and transmission. This will introduce undesirable artifacts, which severely degrade visual quality. Therefore, Video Compression Artifacts Removal (VCAR) aims at reconstructing a high-quality video from its corrupted version of compression. Generally, this task is considered as a vision-related instead of media-related problem. In vision-related research, the visual quality has been significantly improved while the computational complexity and bitrate issues are less considered. In this work, we review the performance constraints of video coding and transfer to evaluate the VCAR outputs. Based on the analyses, we propose a Spatial-Temporal Attention-Guided Enhancement Network (STAGE-Net). First, we employ dynamic filter processing, instead of conventional optical flow method, to reduce the computational cost of VCAR. Second, we introduce self-attention mechanism to design Sequential Residual Attention Blocks (SRABs) to improve visual quality of enhanced video frames with bitrate constraints. Both quantitative and qualitative experimental results have demonstrated the superiority of our proposed method, which achieves high visual qualities and low computational costs. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper aims to develop a holistic evaluation method for piano sound quality to assist in purchasing decisions. Unlike previous studies that focused on the effect of piano performance techniques on sound quality, this study evaluates the inherent sound quality of different pianos. To derive quality evaluation systems, the study uses subjective questionnaires based on a piano sound quality dataset. The method selects the optimal piano classification models by comparing the fine-tuning results of different pre-training models of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). To improve the interpretability of the models, the study applies Equivalent Rectangular Bandwidth (ERB) analysis. The results reveal that musically trained individuals are better able to distinguish between the sound quality differences of different pianos. The best fine-tuned CNN pre-trained backbone achieves a high accuracy of 98.3% as the piano classifier. However, the dataset is limited, and the audio is sliced to increase its quantity, resulting in a lack of diversity and balance, so we use focal loss to reduce the impact of data imbalance. To optimize the method, the dataset will be expanded, or few-shot learning techniques will be employed in future research. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This study addresses the complexities of orchestrating multi-target transportation tasks within multi-agent systems, constrained by load capacity. The primary objective is to engineer an advanced path planning framework that assures collision avoidance and optimal load distribution. Diverging from conventional single-path strategies, this research incorporates load factors and requires continuous dynamic multi-target point and path planning to ensure agents can efficiently navigate through a series of predetermined key points. To address this complex requirement, a two-stage multi-agent task allocation and path planning method is proposed. First, an initial solution is obtained using a suboptimal algorithm, followed by optimization iterations using the large neighborhood search algorithm to improve task allocation. In the second stage, an accelerated algorithm based on priority search is used to plan optimal paths for each agent in a predetermined order. The proposed algorithm's effectiveness is comprehensively evaluated through a series of experimental evaluations and comparisons with the commercial solver Gurobi within a limited time. The results show that the proposed method achieves optimality in both running time and minimum path cost while ensuring the load balance of agents. © 2024 IEEE.

A New Machine-Learning Extracting Approach to Construct a Knowledge Base: A Case Study on Global Stromatolites over Geological Time

Within any scientific disciplines, a large amount of data are buried within various literature depositories and archives, making it difficult to manually extract useful information from the datum swamps. The machine-learning extraction of data therefore is necessary for the big-data-based studies. Here, we develop a new text-mining technique to reconstruct the global database of the Precambrian to Recent stromatolites, providing better understanding of secular changes of stromatolites though geological time. The step-by-step data extraction process is described as below. First, the PDF documents of stromatolite-containing literatures were collected, and converted into text formation. Second, a glossary and tag-labeling system using NLP(Natural Language processing) software was employed to search for all possible candidate pairs from each sentence within the papers collected here. Third, each candidate pair and features were represented as a factor graph model using a series of heuristic procedures to score the weights of each pair feature. Occurrence data of stromatolites versus stratigraphical units(abbreviated as Strata), facies types, locations, and age worldwide were extracted from literatures, respectively, and their extraction accuracies are 92%/464, 87%/778, 92%/846, and 93%/405 from 3 750 scientific abstracts, respectively, and are 90%/1 734, 86%/2 869, 90%/2 055 and 91%/857 from 11 932 papers, respectively. A total of 10 072 unique datum items were identified. The newly obtained stromatolite dataset demonstrates that their stratigraphical occurrences reached a pronounced peak during the Proterozoic(2 500 – 541 Ma), followed by a distinct fall during the Early Phanerozoic, and overall fluctuations through the Phanerozoic(541–0 Ma). Globally, seven stromatolite hotspots were identified from the new dataset, including western United States, eastern United States, western Europe, India, South Africa, northern China, and southern China. Mode division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication technology enhances bandwidth utilization and communication capacity to address the increasing demand for high-capacity data transmission in the era of rapid network traffic growth. For MDM optical fiber communication systems affected by various impairments, optical performance monitoring (OPM) can effectively characterize the impairments in received optical signals, directly reflecting the transmission signal state and channel conditions, and help ensure efficient and stable network operation. In this paper, we propose a multi-task convolutional neural network (MT-CNN) aided OPM method for MDM signals. The proposed MTCNN combines convolutional neural networks and a multi-task learning framework to extract the transmission link information and predict the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of few-mode channels synchronously. Simulation results show that the proposed MT-CNN-based OPM scheme can achieve accurate OSNR performance evaluation for MDM fiber transmission signals. © 2025 SPIE.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most common and non-invasive auxiliary diagnostic technique for heart disease. However, the ECG signal is susceptible to various noises during the collection process, which will impact subsequent analysis and diagnosis. Therefore, ECG signal denoising has become the primary task after signal acquisition. ECG signal denoising aims to remove noise interference from the collected noisy signals for clarify abnormal waveforms in it, and thus diagnose diseases more accurately. In this paper, to obtain high-quality and high-fidelity denoised ECG signals, we propose a novel diffusion model with self-attention module for ECG signal denoising (DMAM-ECG). Specifically, the DMAM-ECG contains two main branches used to extract features of input noise signal observations and potential variables, respectively. Each branch consists of 6 designed Convolution-Instancenormal-LeakyReLU Filter Blocks (CIL-Filter Blocks). Meanwhile, DMAM-ECG introduces the self-Attention Module Fusion Blocks (SAM-Fusion Blocks) to further extract features for the first branch, and then fuse the output features with the second branch. Besides, we use a multi-shot reconstruction strategy to further improve signal denoising. Quantitative and qualitative results on the QT database show that the proposed DMAM-ECG performs better than the existing 5 state-of-the-art ECG signal denoising methods, especially for strong noise interference ECG signal removal. To sum up, our DMAM-ECG introduces self-attention module into the diffusion model to improve the grasp of global information and achieve high-quality information preservation for extremely noise removal of ECG signal. In particular, it uses only 3-shot reconstruction gets much better denoised results than that of the best baseline with 10-shot. Image dehazing is an important research topic and hotspot in the fields of image processing and computer vision. Therefore, evaluating the performance of image dehazing algorithms has become an import research issue. However, current image quality assessment (IQA) algorithms only judge the final dehazed image and do not give an analysis of the capabilities of the image dehazing algorithm. In order to fill this gap, we propose an image dehazing quality assessment method that integrated the dark channel prior with image depth estimation. The proposed method first uses the dark channel prior to estimate the absolute amount of haze removed from each pixel as an indication of the performance of dehazing. Then, a dual-scale variance ratio method is introduced to estimate the scene depth of the image. Finally, the relative dehazing is calculated from the obtained absolute dehazing and the image depth to represent the capability of the dehazing algorithm. The method proposed in this paper first introduces the concepts of relative and absolute dehazing quantities, along with pioneering a pixel-level evaluation of dehazing outcomes. Extensive experiments show that the algorithm proposed in this paper is more in line with human subjective judgment than other IQA algorithms. © 2024, Taiwan Ubiquitous information CO LTD.
