Clustering algorithms have been popularly applied in tissue segmentation in MRI. However, traditional clustering algorithms could not take advantage of some prior knowledge of data even when it does exist. In this paper, we propose a new approach to tissue segmentation of 3D brain MRI using semi-supervised spectral clustering. Spectral clustering algorithm is more powerful than traditional clustering algorithms since it models the voxel-to-voxel relationship as opposed to voxel-to-cluster relationships. In the semi-supervised spectral clustering, two types of instance-level constraints: must-link and cannot-link as background prior knowledge are incorporated into spectral clustering, and the self-tuning parameter is applied to avoid the selection of the scaling parameter of spectral clustering. The semi-supervised spectral clustering is an effective tissue segmentation method because of its advantages in (1) better discovery of real data structure since there is no cluster shape restriction, (2) high quality segmentation results as it can obtain the global optimal solutions in the relaxed continuous domain by eigen-decomposition and combines the pairwise constraints information. Experimental results on simulated and real MRI data demonstrate its effectiveness.

Adaptive feature selection and extraction approaches for image retrieval based on region

image retrieval based on region is one of the most promising and active research directions in recent year's CBIR, while region segmentation, feature selection and feature extraction of region are key issues. However, the existing approaches always adopt a uniform approach of segmentation and feature extraction for all images in the same system. In this paper, we propose adaptive image segmentation and feature extraction approach according to different category image for image retrieval system. To improve performance, we propose adaptive segmentation approach according to different category image. Textured image is segmented by Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM), while non-textured image is segmented by our proposed block-based normalized cut. To accurately describe feature of region, we propose weight assignment method for centroid pixel and its neighbor by convolution with normal distribution when image segmentation by GMM. To improve generalization, we propose adaptive number of Fourier descriptors of shape signature which depends on the energy distribution of Fourier descriptors, instead of fixed number by experience. To simply and efficiently describe the spatial relationships of multi-object or multi-region in same image, we apply simplified topological relationships. The experiments demonstrate that proposed approaches are superior to the traditional approaches. © 2010 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

In order to solve the problem of image degradation caused by dust environments, an image degradation model considering multiple scattering factors caused by dust was first established using the first-order multiple scattering method. Then, a dark channel prior principle was applied to present an image restoration algorithm based on the image degradation model. Finally, a particle swarm optimization algorithm was applied to optimize the atmospheric light and the exposure parameters. This optimization algorithm was established according to the criterion of the image evaluation based on kirsch operator with dual threshold. By using the method an optimistic result of image restoration was obtained. The experimental results have shown that the method not only enhanced luminance and contrast, but also discovered more detail edges information. The method provided a foundation for target recognition in the dust environments. © 2010 IEEE.

Randić et al. proposed a significant graphical representation for DNA sequences, which is very compact and avoids loss of information. In this paper, we build a fast algorithm for this graphical representation with time complexity O(n 2 ), and find another important advantage in the representation: no degeneracy. Moreover, we propose a new method to do similarity analysis of DNA sequences based on the representation. The approach adopts four elements of covariance matrix as a descriptor, and is illustrated on the first exon of beta-globin genes from 11 different species.

Skeleton extraction is essential for general shape representation. A typical skeletonization algorithm should obtain the ability to preserve original object's topological and hierarchical properties. However, most of current methods are high memory cost, computationally intensive, and also require complex data structures. In this paper, we propose an efficient and accurate skeletonization method for the skeleton feature points extracted from human body based on silhouette images. First, the gradient of distance transform is used to detect critical points inside the foreground. Then, we converge and simplify critical points in order to generate the most important and elegant skeleton feature points. Finally, we present an algorithm which connects the skeleton feature points and estimates the position of skeleton joints.

Spiking neural P systems (SN P systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. In this work, a discrete structure representation of SN P systems with extended rules and without delay is proposed. Specifically, matrices are used to represent SN P systems. In order to represent the computations of SN P systems by matrices, configuration vectors are defined to monitor the number of spikes in each neuron at any given configuration;transition net gain vectors are also introduced to quantify the total amount of spikes consumed and produced after the chosen rules are applied. Nondeterminism of the systems is assured by a set of spiking transition vectors that could be used at any given time during the computation. With such matrix representation, it is quite convenient to determine the next configuration from a given configuration, since it involves only multiplication and addition of matrices after deciding the spiking transition vector. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Randić et al. proposed a famous spectral graphical representation of DNA sequences, and claimed that it avoids loss of information. In this paper we build two mathematical models for this graphical representation and prove that the claim is correct, and that it also avoids degeneracy. Moreover, we propose a new method to do similarity analysis of DNA sequences based on the spectral representation. The method adopts M value to characterize a graphical representation and uses 24-component vector as descriptor. The approach is illustrated on the complete coding sequence of beta-globin genes from 7 different species.

New method in information processing for maintaining an efficient dynamic ordered set

This paper investigates how to maintain an efficient dynamic ordered set of bit strings, which is an important problem in the field of information search and information processing. Generally, a dynamic ordered set is required to support 5 essential operations including search, insertion, deletion, max-value retrieval and next-larger-value retrieval. Based on previous research fruits, we present an advanced data structure named rich binary tree （RBT）, which follows both the binary-search-tree property and the digital-search-tree property. Also, every key K keeps the most significant difference bit （MSDB） between itself and the next larger value among K＇s ancestors, as well as that between itself and the next smaller one among its ancestors. With the new data structure, we can maintain a dynamic ordered set in O（L） time. Since computers represent objects in binary mode, our method has a big potential in application. In fact, RBT can be viewed as a general-purpose data structure for problems concerning order, such as search, sorting and maintaining a priority queue. For example, when RBT is applied in sorting, we get a linear-time algorithm with regard to the key number and its performance is far better than quick-sort. What is more powerful than quick-sort is that RBT supports constant-time dynamic insertion/deletion.
