With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical image processing, deep learning in color fundus photography (CFP) analysis is also evolving. Although there are some open-source, labeled datasets of CFPs in the ophthalmology community, large-scale datasets for screening only have labels of disease categories, and datasets with annotations of fundus structures are usually small in size. In addition, labeling standards are not uniform across datasets, and there is no clear information on the acquisition device. Here we release a multi-annotation, multi-quality, and multi-device color fundus image dataset for glaucoma analysis on an original challenge-Retinal Fundus Glaucoma Challenge 2nd Edition (REFUGE2). The REFUGE2 dataset contains 2000 color fundus images with annotations of glaucoma classification, optic disc/cup segmentation, as well as fovea localization. Meanwhile, the REFUGE2 challenge sets three sub-tasks of automatic glaucoma diagnosis and fundus structure analysis and provides an online evaluation framework. Based on the characteristics of multi-device and multi-quality data, some methods with strong generalizations are provided in the challenge to make the predictions more robust. This shows that REFUGE2 brings attention to the characteristics of real-world multi-domain data, bridging the gap between scientific research and clinical application. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

After a large earthquake there will be series of aftershocks. The analyzed regularity of these aftershocks will be conducive to recognize the characteristics of the aftershocks and explore their formation and evolution, and also to provide theoretical support for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and multifractal methods are applied to the time-scaling properties analysis of the waiting time sequence of aftershocks (WTSAs) of the Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake occurred on Longmen mountain tectonic zone of Sichuan Province in China. The results show that the WTSAs is characterized by multifractal scaling. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Artificial intelligence enhances the performance of chaos-based wireless communication

Some new findings for chaos-based wireless communication systems have been identified recently. First, chaos has proven to be the optimal communication waveform because chaotic signals can achieve the maximum signal to noise ratio at receiver with the simplest matched filter. Second, the information transmitted in chaotic signals is not modified by the multipath wireless channel. Third, chaos properties can be used to relief inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath propagation. Although recent work has reported the method of obtaining the optimal threshold to eliminate the ISI in chaos-based wireless communication, its practical implementation is still a challenge. By knowing the channel parameters and all symbols, especially the future symbol to be transmitted in advance, it is almost an impossible task in the practical communication systems. Owning to Artificial intelligence (AI) recent developments, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with deep learning structure is being proposed to predict future symbols based on the received signal, so as to further reduce ISI and obtain better bit error rate (BER) performance as compared to that used the existing sub-optimal threshold. The feature of the method involves predicting the future symbol and obtaining a better threshold suitable for time variant channel. Numerical simulation and experimental results validate our theory and the superiority of the proposed method. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Spinal cord injury repair is one of the major challenges in medicine,as it can lead to permanent loss of function of central nervous system and damage to other function of the *** cell transplantation together with tissue engineering is increasingly becoming a potential choice of ***,direct transplantation of stem cells without scaffolds has yielded poor clinical *** we show a strategy of using mouse embryonic stem cells(ESCs)cultured within a silk fibroin(SF)based,three-dimensional scaffold with oriented channels by a directional temperature field freezing technique and *** find that the ESCs maintained proliferation and migrated in the scaffolds and the cells migrated fastest along the SF *** scaffolds contributed to ESC differentiation into neural and glial cell like cells and expressions of the neural and glial cell markers MAP2 and GFAP were greatly elevated when retinoic acid was used as an inducing *** results suggest that this approach may offer some hope in the future for spinal cord injury repair using SF scaffolds and ESCs.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE:Piper kadsura (Choisy) Ohwi (P. kadsura), locally known as "Haifengteng", is a traditional East Asian herb with over 2,000 years of ethnomedicinal use. It exhibits traditional therapeutic effects, including dispelling rheumatism, dredging meridians, and alleviating arthralgia, and is primarily used to prevent and treat rheumatic diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY:This paper reviews the research progress on the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and quality control of P. kadsura to provide a scientific basis for its rational utilization and further research. MATERIALS AND METHODS:The information on P. kadsura was obtained from books related to traditional Chinese medicine and electronic databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, and CNKI. RESULTS:P. kadsura has shown significant efficacy in preventing and treating rheumatic diseases when used alone, in herbal formulations, or in traditional Chinese medicated diets. To date, 208 compounds, including phenylpropanoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, and others, as well as 379 essential oils, have been identified in P. kadsura. Pharmacological studies have confirmed that its extracts and compounds exhibit diverse activities, including anti-platelet activating factor, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, neuroprotective effects against Alzheimer's disease, anticancer, antiviral, and harmful biological control effects. CONCLUSIONS:P. kadsura exhibits a diverse chemical composition and a wide range of pharmacological activities. Despite recent research progress, there are still some deficiencies, including limited isolation studies of new compounds, incomplete elucidation of some pharmacological mechanisms, significant gaps in pharmacokinetic research, and the need for standardized quality control measures. Future research should address these issues to fully realize its medicinal potential and value.

In this paper, with considerations of low efficiency of missile path planning (MPP) by traditional aggregation technology, it uses affinity propagation based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm with hypervolume environment selection (APMO-HV) to solve the problem of MPP after establishing the MPP model. The experimental part compares and analyzes APMO-HV with six state-of-the-art algorithms, and applies it to address the MPP problem. The experimental results show that compared with the other six algorithms, APMO-HV has achieved the best solution performance in both the GLT test suite and MPP problem. This not only validates the effect of the proposed algorithm, but also enriches and improves the research results of MPP.

Recently,many researchers have concentrated on using neural networks to learn features for Distant Supervised Relation Extraction(DSRE).These approaches generally use a softmax classifier with cross-entropy loss,which inevitably brings the noise of artificial class NA into classification *** address the shortcoming,the classifier with ranking loss is employed to *** randomly selecting a relation or heuristically selecting the highest score among all incorrect relations are two common methods for generating a negative class in the ranking loss ***,the majority of the generated negative class can be easily discriminated from positive class and will contribute little towards the *** by Generative Adversarial Networks(GANs),we use a neural network as the negative class generator to assist the training of our desired model,which acts as the discriminator in *** the alternating optimization of generator and discriminator,the generator is learning to produce more and more discriminable negative classes and the discriminator has to become better as *** framework is independent of the concrete form of generator and *** this paper,we use a two layers fully-connected neural network as the generator and the Piecewise Convolutional Neural Networks(PCNNs)as the *** results show that our proposed GAN-based method is effective and performs better than state-of-the-art methods.

In 3D surface reconstruction from normals, discontinuity preservation is an important but challenging task. However, existing studies fail to address the discontinuous normal maps by enforcing the surface integrability in the continuous domain. This paper introduces a robust approach to preserve the surface discontinuity in the discrete geometry way. Firstly, we design two representative normal incompatibility features and propose an efficient discontinuity detection scheme to determine the splitting pattern for a discrete mesh. Secondly, we model the discontinuity preservation problem as a light-weight energy optimization framework by jointly considering the discontinuity detection and the overall reconstruction error. Lastly, we further shrink the feasible solution space to reduce the complexity based on the prior knowledge. Experiments show that the proposed method achieves the best performance on an extensive 3D dataset compared with the state-of-the-arts in terms of mean angular error and computational complexity.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common retinal disease that leads to blindness. For diagnosis purposes, DR image grading aims to provide automatic DR grade classification, which is not addressed in conventional research methods of binary DR image classification. Small objects in the eye images, like lesions and microaneurysms, are essential to DR grading in medical imaging, but they could easily be influenced by other objects. To address these challenges, we propose a new deep learning architecture, called BiRA-Net, which combines the attention model for feature extraction and bilinear model for fine-grained classification. Furthermore, in considering the distance between different grades of different DR categories, we propose a new loss function, called grading loss, which leads to improved training convergence of the proposed approach. DNA strand displacement is widely used in the construction of DNA molecule computational models. In this work, nicking enzyme is used as the input of the logic calculation model for it can cut one strand of a double-stranded DNA at a specific recognition nucleotide sequences known as a restriction site. Based on this, a variety of logic gates are designed and implemented, and a multi-person voting circuit is constructed. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
