Photovoltaic systems greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, the microenvironmental changes of photovoltaic modules affect soil organic carbon (SOC) and improve carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems to mitigate global climate change is unclear. We analyzed the effects of different photovoltaic systems on SOC and its fractions in semi-arid grassland, and revealed the SOC formation and stability mechanisms. Tracking photovoltaic systems increased carbon stock, especially proportion of mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) in SOC by more than 10 %, and depended on the responses of plant inputs and microbial necromass to microenvironmental changes. Suitable amounts of light and water in the systems improved litter biomass and quality, and promoted MAOC accumulation by increasing the exogenous carbon supply and microbial activity. Such systems also reduced soil carbon loss by reducing heterotrophic respiration caused by low levels of organic acids and recruiting effective microorganisms such as Schizothecium and Lactobacillus. Moreover, changes in litter and root exudates promoted microbial biomass and enzyme activity, mediating the retention of microbial necromass and SOC. The contribution of bacterial necromass carbon to SOC increased by more than 8.5 %. However, fixed photovoltaic systems reduced soil carbon stock by 0.46 kg m due to water limitations that decreased both plant carbon inputs and microbial necromass. Our results revealed the importance of plant inputs and microbial necromass in regulating SOC in photovoltaic systems, and demonstrated that photovoltaic systems can achieve synergies between CO emission reduction and soil carbon sequestration. This provides new insights for formulating carbon management policy and promoting sustainable eco-economic development.

Capacity analysis of ship-tugging operations in a large container port

In this study, we deal with the simulation problem of ship-tugging operations in a large container port. First, we build a tugboat-service network using a directed graph, where the nodes consist of tugboat bases, anchorages, and berths while the arcs represent the directed links between nodes. Second, we develop a marine traffic simulation system, which can simulate maritime traffic conditions in restricted waters, such as large container ports and busy straits. The marine traffic simulation system is a customized system. Users are allowed to set their study areas and virtual traffic environment (such as traffic demand and network structure) at will. Finally, we conduct various simulations for a real tugboat-service network of Singapore Port, which includes one anchorage, one tugboat base, two berths, and two channels between the anchorage and berths. A detailed analysis of the tugging capacity is provided based on simulation results. © 2020 The Authors

With the rapid development of information technology and the explosive growth of data, the scale of storage equipment is growing rapidly. The high energy consumption storage devices have become a serious problem for data centcrs. for data storage, the model of sequential data access a storage system is commonly used. Aiming at the characteristics of a sequential data storage system, this paper, we propose a structure, named Adapted to Dynamic Load based on Redundant Array Independent Disks (ADL-RAID) which Is an effective energy-saving data layout for dynamic loads based on the existing Semi-Redundam Array independent Disks (S-RAID). ADL-RAID inherits the local parallel energy-saving strategy, uses an address mapping mechanism, and allocates storage space to satisfy the performance requirements for the user requested application. By sensing different loads, ADL-RAID allocates storage space for its dynamic loads with the appropriate parallelism. One or several data disks are used when I he load is minimized, and all the data disks are used in parallel when the toad is maximized. Experimental results show that, for 100% continuous write request ADL-RAID saves 33.6% energy consumption than S-RAID5 and improves write performance than S-RAID5 by 34.3%. Thus, ADL-RAID has higher availability and is ideal for sequential data storage applications. © 2018 CRL Publishing. All rights reserved.

MultiAdapt: A Neural Network Adaptation For Pruning Filters Base on Multi-layers Group

Deep convolutional neural networks have been widely used in various AI applications. The most advanced neural networks are becoming deeper and wider, which has caused some large convolutional neural networks to exceed the size limit of the server or application. The pruning algorithm provides a way to reduce the size of the neural network while keeping the accuracy as high as possible. The automatic progressive pruning algorithm is one of the widely used pruning algorithms. The progressive pruning algorithm prunes a certain layer of the network in each iteration to reduce the sparsity while preserving the accuracy as much as possible. In this article, we design a new automatic progressive pruning algorithm named MultiAdapt. MultiAdapt combines the combination method and the greedy algorithm. This multi-layers progressive pruning method greatly increases the search space of the greedy algorithm, making it possible to obtain a better pruning network. We use MultiAdapt to prune large neural networks VGG-16 and ResNet. The experimental results show that the MultiAdapt algorithm is better than other mainstream methods in the balance of neural network model size and accuracy. For image classification tasks on the ImageNet dataset, our method achieved 88.72% and 90.55% TOP-5 accuracy on the 50% sparsity VGG-16 and ResNet, while obtaining nearly 2×reduction in parameters and floating point numbers. The operation is reduced, and the reduction is higher than the recent popular method.

Deep policy hashing network with listwise supervision

Deep-networks-based hashing has become a leading approach for large-scale image retrieval, which learns a similarity-preserving network to map similar images to nearby hash codes. The pairwise and triplet losses are two widely used similarity preserving manners for deep hashing. These manners ignore the fact that hashing is a prediction task on the list of binary codes. However, learning deep hashing with listwise supervision is challenging in 1) how to obtain the rank list of whole training set when the batch size of the deep network is always small and 2) how to utilize the listwise supervision. In this paper, we present a novel deep policy hashing architecture with two systems are learned in parallel: A query network and a shared and slowly changing database network. The following three steps are repeated until convergence: 1) the database network encodes all training samples into binary codes to obtain whole rank list, 2) the query network is trained based on policy learning to maximize a reward that indicates the performance of the whole ranking list of binary codes, e.g., mean average precision (MAP), and 3) the database network is updated as the query network. Extensive evaluations on several benchmark datasets show that the proposed method brings substantial improvements over state-of-the-art hashing methods. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading all over the world. Medical imaging such as X-ray and computed tomography (CT) plays an essential role in the global fight against COVID-19, whereas the recently emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies further strengthen the power of the imaging tools and help medical specialists. We hereby review the rapid responses in the community of medical imaging (empowered by AI) toward COVID-19. For example, AI-empowered image acquisition can significantly help automate the scanning procedure and also reshape the workflow with minimal contact to patients, providing the best protection to the imaging technicians. Also, AI ca n improve work efficiency by accurate delination of infections in X-ray and CT images, facilitating subsequent quantification. Moreover, the computer-aided platforms help radiologists make clinical decisions, i.e., for disease diagnosis, tracking, and prognosis. In this review paper, we thus cover the entire pipeline of medical imaging and analysis techniques involved with COVID-19, including image acquisition, segmentation, diagnosis, and follow-up. We particularly focus on the integration of AI with X-ray and CT, both of which are widely used in the frontline hospitals, in order to depict the latest progress of medical imaging and radiology fighting against COVID-19.
