Two-Stage Fusion Model for Heavy Rain Removal on Single Image

Current single image derain methods cannot solve the heavy rain situation well. In this paper, based on the physical model of a rainy image, we build a two-stage network, TSF-Net, which combines model-driven and data-driven methods. The first stage gets the rain streaks, atmospheric light, and transmission map to obtain the coarse rain-free image by the physical model. The second stage is a fully convolutional neural network with the structure of U-Net. The proposed Multi-Scale Projection Fusion Block (MSPFB) module, which can perceive the spatial information across the scale of images, is employed to remove the residual rain and fuzzy parts in the first stage and obtain a refined clean image. Extensive experiments show that our TSF-Net achieves better accuracy and visual improvements against state-of-the-art methods.

DRAM is a significant source of server power consumption especially when the server runs memory intensive applications. Current power aware scheduling assumes that DRAM is as energy proportional as other components. However, the non-energy proportionality of DRAM significantly affects the power and energy consumption of the whole server system when running memory intensive applications. Thus good knowledge of server power characterization under memory intensive workloads can help better workload placement with power reduction. In this paper, we investigate the power characteristics of memory intensive applications on real rack servers of different generations. Through comprehensive analysis we find that (1) Server power consumption changes with workload intensity and concurrent execution threads. However, fully utilized memory systems are not the most energy efficient. (2) Powered memory modules of installed memory capacity, i.e. the memory capacity per processor core has significant impact on the application’s performance and server power consumption even if the memory system is not fully utilized. (3) Memory utilization is not always a good indicator for server power consumption when it is running memory intensive applications. Our experiments show that hardware configuration, workload types, as well as concurrently running threads have significant impact on a server’s energy efficiency when running memory intensive applications. Our findings presented in this paper provide useful insights and guidance to system designers, as well as data center operators for energy efficiency aware job scheduling and power reductions. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The time-varying formations are usually required in practice for multi-agent systems to track the trajectories generated by multiple leaders. The ability to maintain a stable formation property is helpful in terms of facilitating subsequent tasks such as collaborative detection, cooperative reconnaissance and performing other specific task like fetch and transport goods together as a team. However, most of existing methods, on the other hand, are fragile to the measurement noises and network sparsity. Moreover, it seems that few results are available that considering the internal and external control loop to arrive the consensus of position, the velocity and the attitude simultaneously. To overcome these limitations, in this paper, we proposed a novel scheme and developed a novel ℒ 1 gain algorithm, where the integrated two loop robot control scheme is endowed with disturbance rejection ability, and it can maintain the formation structure during motion along a pre-determined or online generated geometric path, and to follow a timing law that dominates the rate of advancement of the group. Sufficient conditions are established to guarantee the stability, the invariant set property, the ℒ 1 gain index, and also the initial tracking error bounding constraints, which are formulated and presented in terms of LMIs/BMIs and can be readily solved to obtain the controller. Extensive simulations are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the five robots as well as the three robots formulation cases are detail analysis. It turns out that, in addition to providing a novel perspective of the formulation control problem with disturbance rejection ability, the approach adopted in this paper also paves the way to several extensions in relation to control of multi-agent systems in accordance with swarm intelligence principles, such as the collision avoidance, the delayed multi-agent system control, the incorporation of multiple simultaneous objective

Currently, many cloud providers deploy their big data processing systems as cloud services, which helps users conveniently manage and process their data in clouds. Among different service providers’ big data processing services, how to evaluate and compare their scalability is an interesting and challenging work. Most traditional benchmark tools focus on performance evaluation of big data processing systems, such as aggregated throughput and IOPS, but fail to conduct a quantitative analysis of their scalability. In this paper, we propose a measurement methodology to quantify the scalability of big data processing services, which makes the cloud services scalability comparable. We conduct a group of comparative experiments on AliCloud E-MapReduce and Baidu MRS, and collect their respective scalability characteristics under Hadoop and Spark workloads. The scalability characteristics observed in our work could help cloud users choose the best cloud service platform to set up an optimized big data processing system to achieve their specific goals more successfully. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Accelerating drug repurposing for COVID-19 via modeling drug mechanism of action with large scale gene-expression profiles

The novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19, has rapidly spread worldwide. Developing methods to identify the therapeutic activity of drugs based on phenotypic data can improve the efficiency of drug development. Here, a state-of-the-art machine-learning method was used to identify drug mechanisms of action (MoA) based on the cell image features of 1105 drugs in the LINCS database. As the multi-dimensional features of cell images are affected by non-experimental factors, the characteristics of similar drugs vary considerably, and it is difficult to effectively identify the MoA of drugs as there is substantial noise. By applying the supervised information theoretic metric-learning (ITML) algorithm, a linear transformation made drugs with the same MoA aggregate. By clustering drugs to communities and performing enrichment analysis, we found that transferred image features were more conducive to the recognition of drug MoA. Image features analysis showed that different features play important roles in identifying different drug functions. Drugs that significantly affect cell survival or proliferation, such as cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, were more likely to be enriched in communities, whereas other drugs might be decentralized. Chloroquine and clomiphene, which block the entry of virus, were clustered into the same community, indicating that similar MoA could be reflected by the cell image. Overall, the findings of the present study laid the foundation for the discovery of MoAs of new drugs, based on image data. In addition, it provided a new method of drug repurposing for COVID-19. In recent years, scene parsing has captured increasing attention in computer vision. Previous works have demonstrated promising performance in this task. However, they mainly utilize holistic features, whilst neglecting the rich semantic knowledge and inter-object relationships in the scene. In addition, these methods usually require a large number of pixel-level annotations, which is too expensive in practice. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge Embedded Generative Adversarial Networks, dubbed as KE-GAN, to tackle the challenging problem in a semi-supervised fashion. KE-GAN captures semantic consistencies of different categories by devising a knowledge Graph from the large-scale text corpus. In addition to readily-available unlabeled data, we generate synthetic images to unveil rich structural information underlying the images. Moreover, a pyramid architecture is incorporated into the discriminator to acquire multi-scale contextual information for better parsing results. Extensive experimental results on four standard benchmarks demonstrate that KE-GAN is capable of improving semantic consistencies and learning better representations for scene parsing, resulting in the state-of-the-art performance.

Isospin-density dependent pairing from infinite nuclear matter to finite nuclei

The effective isospin-density dependent pairing interaction (P1) [S. S. Zhang, U. Lombardo and E. G. Zhao, Sci. Chin. Phys. Mech. Astro. 54, 236 (2011)] extracted from neutron pairing gaps for 1S0 in asymmetric nuclear matter calculations [S. S. Zhang, L. G. Cao, U. Lombardo, et al. Phys. Rev. C 81, 044313 (2010)] is employed to study the bulk properties of Ca, Ni, Zr and Sn isotopes. The odd-even mass (OEM) staggering is calculated by the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS method (SHF + BCS) with the SkP interaction. For comparison, we study two other types of isovector effective pairing interactions. One is also extracted from pairing gaps of infinite nuclear matter by the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) method but for free spectrum (P2). The other is obtained by fitting the empirical OEM (P3). An isoscalar effective pairing interaction (P4) is also adopted which is determined by fitting the empirical OEM. We find that interaction P1 can better describe the OEM staggering of Ni, Zr and Sn isotopes by 14.3%, 41%, 30.4% compared with interaction P2, in terms of root mean square deviations to the empirical OEM, respectively. On the other hand, the performance of P1 and P2 is comparable for Ca isotopes. For Ca and Ni isotopes, P1 behaves similarly as P3, but for Zr isotopes P1 is better than P3 by ∼ 34%. Among the four pairing interactions studied, P4 performs the worst. Therefore, one may conclude that for neutron pairings in finite nuclei, the isovector pairings are preferred than the isoscalar one. It is quite interesting to note that the pairing interaction P1 extracted from nuclear matter calculations can describe pairing gaps of finite nuclei as well as or even better than the interaction P3 directly fitted to finite nuclei. Tailings ponds are places for storing industrial waste. The saturation line is the key factor of quantifying the safety of tailings pond. Existing saturation line time-series prediction methods are mainly based on statistical models or shallow machine learning models. Although these models aim to capture the time dependence of the sequence data, the channel and temporal are even unavailable in principle. In this paper, we presents a two-stage forecasting method, which embeds the channel and temporal attention into a hybrid CNN-LSTM model to predict the saturation line. In the first stage, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is applied to capture the refined sequence information. In the second stage, the CNN-LSTM model is utilized to learn the basic spatial and temporal features in the time series. Furthermore, the channel and temporal attention model are embedded into CNN-LSTM model to enhance the feature extracting ability in channel and temporal dimension. Consequently, our proposed model is shown to outperform classic models on five real-world datasets. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Complete mitochondrial genome ofPelecanus crispusand its phylogeny

The Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), in the order Pelecaniformes, its habitat is distributed in Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is a large waterfowl that is of international concern. In this study, we first sequenced and described the complete mitochondrial genome and phylogeny ofP. crispus. The results showed that the whole genome ofP. crispuswas 16,131 bp in length, and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosome RNA genes, and one non-coding control region. The overall base composition of the mitochondrial DNA was 30.48% for A, 23.15% for T, 31.68% for C, and 14.69% for G, with a GC content of 46.37%. A phylogenetic tree ofP. crispusin Pelecaniformes confirmed thatP. crispuswas sister toC. occidentalis. This information will be useful in the current understanding of the phylogeny and evolution of Pelecaniformes.
