Cascade control for supply air temperature in a variable air volume system

Most supply air temperature in variable air volume systems is typically set at 55F(13 °C) that is design value in these systems. However, sometimes the load of cooling varies greatly in different zones, and it means the indoor temperature of low-load zones is lower than comfortable value, even if the supply air damper is at the minimum value that is not closed for minimum outside air requirement. Meanwhile, in transition season, the indoor temperature is also lower due to low outdoor temperature. These factors provided an opportunity to apply higher supply air temperature to reduce air handling unit (AHU) cooling load and box reheating. In this paper, a cascade control method is used to raise the supply air temperature. The external control loop controls the setting value of supply air temperature with the minimum supply air volume as the control target. And the internal control loop controls the supply air temperature by regulating valve. The cascade structure can solve the problem that the time constant of the system is too large. The simulation results show that the quality of control is good and the reheating can be cancelled.

Most existing research on routing guidance only pays attention to the average value of path travel time, which fails to consider travel time variability (TTV) and travel time reliability preferences by different travelers. In this study, a convolution-based modified genetic algorithm (CMGA) is proposed to find the reliable shortest path in stochastic road networks. By accounting for traveler risk tolerance, the algorithm enables the provision of personalized routing guidance for individual travelers. To support online applications in a large-scale network, reasonable heuristic constraints are imposed to help reduce the computational workload and accelerate the convergence speed of the search process. Numerical case studies based on a grid network with random offsets are provided, and the results help verify that the algorithm has the potential to solve reliable shortest path searching problems in a large-scale network with desirable efficiency. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

WISERNet: Wider Separate-then-reunion Network for Steganalysis of Color Images

Until recently, deep steganalyzers in spatial domain have been all designed for gray-scale images. In this paper, we propose WISERNet (the wider separate-then-reunion network) for steganalysis of color images. We provide theoretical rationale to claim that the summation in normal convolution is one sort of "linear collusion attack" which reserves strong correlated patterns while impairs uncorrelated noises. Therefore in the bottom convolutional layer which aims at suppressing correlated image contents, we adopt separate channel-wise convolution without summation instead. Conversely, in the upper convolutional layers we believe that the summation in normal convolution is beneficial. Therefore we adopt united normal convolution in those layers and make them remarkably wider to reinforce the effect of "linear collusion attack". As a result, our proposed wide-and-shallow, separate-then-reunion network structure is specifically suitable for color image steganalysis. We have conducted extensive experiments on color image datasets generated from BOSSBase raw images and another large-scale dataset which contains 100,000 raw images, with di_erent demosaicking algorithms and downsampling algorithms. The experimental results show that our proposed network outperforms other state-of-the-art color image steganalytic models either hand-crafted or learned using deep networks in the literature by a clear margin. Specifically, it is noted that the detection performance gain is achieved with less than half the complexity compared to the most advanced deeplearning steganalyzer as far as we know, which is scarce in the literature. It has been worthy of notice that the number of scientific researchers has experienced a rapid growth in China. Meanwhile, the strict restriction to the total number and the position structure of researchers has exerted great pressure on the Chinese researchers. The decision makers have noticed this dilemma and a quantitative predicting result for decision support is in need. This paper puts forward a data-driven dynamic programming model to estimate the research position demand gap based on the thought of dynamic programming. This model fully considers the real practice of human resource management in scientific management in China. In the empirical study, the personnel data from 2006 to 2014, which are abstracted from the Academia Resource Planning system of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, are applied to the empirical analysis to estimate the human resource demand gap in the 13th Five Year Plan. The results show that there is a big demand gap of the research position on the whole in the next five years. © 2017, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Geant4 simulation of multi-sphere spectrometer response function and the detection of 241Am–Be neutron spectrum

This paper is aimed at detecting the neutron spectrum of^(241)Am–Be, a widely used neutron source, with the SP9 ~3He proportional counter, which is a multi-sphere spectrometer system of eight thermal neutron detectors embedded in eight polyethylene(PE) spheres of varying diameters. The transport processes of a neutron in the multi-sphere spectrometer are simulated using the Geant4 code. Two sets of response functions of the PE spheres are obtained for calculating the^(241)Am–Be neutron *** Function 1 utilizes the thermal neutron scattering model G4 Neutron HPThermal Scattering for neutron energies of ≤4 eV, and Response Function 2 has no thermal treatment. Neutron spectra of an^(241)Am–Be neutron source are measured and compared to those calculated by using the response functions. The results show that response function with thermal treatment is more accurate and closer to the real spectrum.

Many Zintl phases are promising thermoelectric materials owning to their features like narrow band gaps, multiband behaviors, ideal charge transport tunnels, and loosely bound cations. Herein we show a new Zintl phase NaCdSb with exceptional intrinsic thermoelectric performance. Pristine NaCdSb exhibits semiconductor behaviors with an experimental hole concentration of 2.9×10 18 cm −3 and a calculated band gap of 0.5 eV. As the temperature increases, the hole concentration rises gradually and approaches its optimal one, leading to a high power factor of 11.56 μW cm −1 K −2 at 673 K. The ultralow thermal conductivity is derived from the small phonon group velocity and short phonon lifetime, ascribed to the structural anharmonicity of Cd−Sb bonds. As a consequence, a maximum zT of 1.3 at 673 K has been achieved without any doping optimization or structural modification, demonstrating that NaCdSb is a remarkable thermoelectric compound with great potential for performance improvement.

Understanding adversarial attacks on deep learning based medical image analysis systems

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have become popular for medical image analysis tasks like cancer diagnosis and lesion detection. However, a recent study demonstrates that medical deep learning systems can be compromised by carefully-engineered adversarial examples/attacks with small imperceptible perturbations. This raises safety concerns about the deployment of these systems in clinical settings. In this paper, we provide a deeper understanding of adversarial examples in the context of medical images. We find that medical DNN models can be more vulnerable to adversarial attacks compared to models for natural images, according to two different viewpoints. Surprisingly, we also find that medical adversarial attacks can be easily detected, i.e., simple detectors can achieve over 98% detection AUC against state-of-the-art attacks, due to fundamental feature differences compared to normal examples. We believe these findings may be a useful basis to approach the design of more explainable and secure medical deep learning systems. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Detecting Difference Between Coefficients in Linear Model Using Jackknife Empirical Likelihood

Empirical likelihood has been found very useful in many different occasions. It usually runs into serious computational difficulties while jackknife empirical likelihood （JEL） is shown to be effective when applied to some complicated statistics. In this paper, to test the difference between coefficients of two linear regression models, the authors apply JEL to construct the confidence regions. Based on the 3EL ratio test, a version of Wilks＇ theorem is developed. Furthermore, to improve the coverage accuracy of confidence regions, a Bartlett correction is applied. Simulation studies are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed method in aspects of coverage accuracy. A real data set is analyzed with the proposed method as an example.

The etching process is an important item in the advanced semiconductor process. After each layer of film and photolithography, it must be etched. Under the current large-scale use of single-wafer processing machines, the PM frequency of the etching machine is greatly increased; so many equipment engineers have serious problems. For cumulative ergonomics injury, under the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of Taiwan, each semiconductor factory must implement an effective ergonomics injury prevention plan. Therefore, based on the aforementioned problems, this study hopes to use AI methods to assist company management to reduce ergonomics injury, the situation allows workers to work with more peace of mind. However, this study is mainly based on visual recognition technology to perform the operation recognition of PM etching personnel, and compares the recognition results with the cloud system calculation, and the calculation method mainly uses CNNs. The results found that the use of visual recognition technology in this study can effectively identify 95% of unsafe actions. When it is compared with the default alert and alarm values, the APP signal can be transmitted to the site manager with the WiFi connection from cloud system. For the operation the non-conformity rate has been reduced from 40% at the beginning to 15%, for the reduction from 38% to about 15%, the improvement trend is in line with wafer operations, which is an important contribution of this study.
