Multimedia event extraction aims to jointly extract event structural knowledge from multiple modalities, thus improving the comprehension and utilization of events in the growing multimedia content (e.g., multimedia news). A key challenge in multimedia event extraction is to establish cross-modal correlations during training without multimedia event annotations. Considering the complexity and cost of annotation across modalities, the multimedia event extraction task only provides parallel annotated data for evaluation. Previous works attempt to learn implicit correlations directly from unlabeled image-text pairs, but do not yield substantially better performance for event-centric tasks. To address this problem, we propose a cross-modal multi-task learning framework X-MTL to establish cross-modal correlations at the task level, which can simultaneously address four key tasks of multimedia event extraction: trigger detection, argument extraction, verb classification, and role classification. Specifically, to process inputs from different modalities and tasks, we utilize two separate modality-specific encoders and a modality-shared encoder to learn joint task representations, and introduce textual and visual prompt learning methods to enrich and unify task inputs. To resolve task conflict in cross-modal multi-task learning, we propose a pseudo label based knowledge distillation method, combined with dynamic weight adjustment method, which can effectively lift the performance to surpass the separately-trained models. On the MultiMedia Event Extraction benchmark M2E2, experimental results show that X-MTL surpasses the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods by 4.1% for multimedia event mention and 8.2% for multimedia argument role. Federated learning, an emerging distributed learning framework, has gained prominence recently. However, two challenges arise when applying federated learning to medical data. The first challenge stems from the inability of model-generating nodes to ensure computational fairness. The second challenge involves the potential leakage of private information through gradient differences. This paper introduces a federated learning system that leverages Software Guard Extensions (SGX) and blockchain technology to enhance the fairness and security of federated learning for analyzing chest imaging data. The modeling of imaging factors for chest radiography data can effectively regulate the data quality of semi-trusted nodes. A blockchain smart contract is employed for data quality-aware proof, and the quality-aware block undergoes a two-stage rewriting process across distinct nodes. A notary membership model achieves notarized cluster consensus for imaging informatics data. The multi-channel layer model quantifies the distribution of computational workload across participating nodes within the medical consortium. Upon successful verification of the enclave command in the aggregation cycle, traceable and packaged signatures are generated to support computational fairness. To ensure robust information security, SGX remote authentication is used between downstream and upstream nodes. The federated learning system, built upon SGX and blockchain, has been implemented using the Fabric federated chain platform. The ResNet model underwent training through cross-sectional federated learning to effectively classify novel coronavirus lung medical image data. Following this, multiple experimental control and security analyses were conducted, revealing that the time loss incurred due to crossing channels is approximately 21.31%, while the time overhead of SGX remains within 5.2%, as allowed by the number of nodes. © 2023 IEEE.

—Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as the potential aerial base stations (BSs) to improve terrestrial communications. However, the limited onboard energy and antenna power of a UAV restrict its communication range and transmission capability. To address these limitations, this work employs collaborative beamforming through a UAV-enabled virtual antenna array to improve transmission performance from the UAV to terrestrial mobile users, under interference from non-associated BSs and dynamic channel conditions. Specifically, we introduce a memory-based random walk model to more accurately depict the mobility patterns of terrestrial mobile users. Following this, we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem (MOP) focused on maximizing the transmission rate while minimizing the flight energy consumption of the UAV swarm. Given the NP-hard nature of the formulated MOP and the highly dynamic environment, we transform this problem into a multi-objective Markov decision process and propose an improved evolutionary multi-objective reinforcement learning algorithm. Specifically, this algorithm introduces an evolutionary learning approach to obtain the approximate Pareto set for the formulated MOP. Moreover, the algorithm incorporates a long short-term memory network and hyper-sphere-based task selection method to discern the movement patterns of terrestrial mobile users and improve the diversity of the obtained Pareto set. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively generates a diverse range of non-dominated policies and outperforms existing methods. Additional simulations demonstrate the scalability and robustness of the proposed CB-based method under different system parameters and various unexpected circumstances. © 2025 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) is the standard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). With the development of artificial intelligence, an increasing number of studies have begun to explore its application in cancer treatment prediction. However, the prior methods exhibit considerable variability even with slight modifications to the input data, which could potentially undermine the reliability of the results. In this paper, we proposed RP-Net, a novel multi-modal fusion-based framework that combines feature information from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and whole slide images (WSI), establishing a relationship to map the therapeutic effectiveness of nCRT for LARC. We investigated the relationship of the tumour region and its periphery tissues, and demonstrated the validity of the proposed framework that involving 11 different combinations of modalities. The experimental results revealed that it has achieved higher prediction accuracy compared to the four intra-categories single-modal combinations and outperformed the two intra-categories multi-modal combinations. When compared to the other four inter-categories multi-modal combinations, the fusion features get accuracy of 2% ∼ 6% improvement respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

Rapid acquisition of fish freshness is an important task. The traditional freshness detection of aquatic fish has the problems of damaging samples, complicated operation and long detection time. A convenient, rapid, nondestructive and accurate freshness detection method is urgently needed in production. In this study, the freshness of aquatic fish was evaluated nondestructively and rapidly by machine vision. Firstly, we select the appropriate data set, and add the attention mechanism module to the end of the MobileNetV1 with the default alpha value. Secondly, the alpha value of all models is reduced to compare the performance for subsequent deployment to the cloud and small embedded devices with limited resources. Finally, the network is trained by real data. The results show that the MobilenetV1 network with attention mechanism module can better evaluate the freshness of fish through the fisheye image. The convergence speed and accuracy of the network are improved compared with the original network, and it is more suitable for the task of determining the freshness of fish through fisheye.

Multi depot school bus routing problem (MDSBRP) refers to the school bus routing problem (SBRP) with multiple depots, which effectively reduces the service cost by adjusting the order of school buses from depot to station. In this paper, a heuristic algorithm based on simulated annealing is proposed to solve the multi depot school bus routing problem. The problem considers the constraints of school time window and school bus capacity. Through the operation adjustment of depots and stations, the number and driving distance of school buses can be effectively reduced. The existing benchmark case set and modified test cases are used to test the algorithm. The experimental results show that the use of multi depot mode can effectively reduce the number of school buses and save operating costs, which shows the effectiveness of the algorithm. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. An image privacy information protection method that does not damage the original image quality is proposed considering the risk of privacy information leakage due to the widespread use of image sensors and image sharing in social platforms. A convolutional neural network is used to detect the privacy information of the image. A generative adversarial network is then employed for the detected privacy content to protect image privacy by transforming the privacy information into non-privacy information without damaging the original image quality. Numerous studies have been conducted on real-world images., and results prove the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Lightweight Aerial Image Object Detector Based on Mask Information Enhancement

Object detection in UAV imagery is highly valuable in both military and civilian domains. However, deploying conventional detectors is challenging due to limited computing resources on UAV platforms. Additionally, UAV images often contain densely arranged objects, demanding higher accuracy from detectors. In response to these challenges, we proposed the lightweight aerial object detection method based on mask feature enhancement, named BFDet. First, to enhance the feature extraction capability of the model under limited parameters, we designed the Balanced Channel Attention Layer (BCA Layer). The BCA Layer improves the extraction of high-quality channel information during feature processing. Second, to enhance model performance while minimizing parameters, we designed a feature extraction network utilizing the Efficient Feature Extraction Module (EFEM) and the Downsampling Module (DM) as its backbone. This design reduces the number of parameters while improving the extraction of discriminative features. Third, to enrich the semantic information of features, we proposed a Progressive Space Pyramid Pooling (PSPP) module, obtaining features with rich semantic information to enhance model performance. Finally, to tackle the challenge of detecting densely packed objects, we proposed a Mask Information Enhancement Module (MIEM) to obtain the fine-grained features, enhancing the model's discriminative ability in dense scenes. The proposed BFDet underwent extensive experimentation on both the Vis-Drone and UAVDT datasets. The mAP0.5 and FPS values of BFDet reach 51.4% and 33 respectively on the VisDrone dataset, and the parameter number is only 5.6M. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Due to the exceptional performance of Transform-ers in 2D medical image segmentation, recent work has also introduced them into 3D medical segmentation tasks. For instance, Swin UNETR and other hierarchical Transformers have reintroduced prior knowledge from several convolutional networks, further enhancing the volume segmentation capabilities of models. The efficacy of these hybrid methodologies is primarily attributed to the substantial quantity of parameters and the nonlocal self-attention mechanism with a large receptive field. We argue that the behavior of these methods' large receptive fields can be simulated by employing fewer parameters through the utilization of depth-wise convolutions with large kernel. Within this manuscript, we introduce a lightweight volume segmentation model called MedX-Net, which uses convolutional network modules to simulate hierarchical Transformers for robust volume segmentation. Firstly, inspired by the hierarchical Transformer module of Swin UNETR, we investigate large-kernel depth-wise convolutions with different sizes to achieve a reduced model parameter count while maintaining a large global receptive field. Secondly, we replace the multilayer perceptron (MLP) in the hierarchical Transformer module with Inverted Bottleneck with Depthwise Convolution Enhancement(DWCE) to improve model performance with fewer activation and normalization layers, further reducing the parameter count. We validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our model for volume segmentation on three public datasets: Synapse, BTCV and ACDC. On the Synapse dataset, compared to Swin UNETR, our model achieves an improvement from 83.48% to 87.21% in Dice score. Compared to the result of 86.57% achieved by nnFormer, our model achieves superior performance while reducing the model parameter count by 64%. © 2024 IEEE.
