T³Planner: Multi-Phase Planning Across Structure-Constrained Optical, IP, and Routing Topologies

Network topology planning is an essential multi-phase process to build and jointly optimize the multi-layer network topologies in wide-area networks (WANs). Most existing practices target single-phase/layer planning, and are incapable of satisfying all rigorous topological structure constraints (e.g., dual-homing rings) defined by network standards and operators, especially in large-scale networks. These significantly limit their usability and performance in production networks. We consider a general topology planning problem with typical structure constraints over three essential phases (greenfield, reconfiguration, and site expansion) and topological layers (optical, IP, and routing topologies). We present, T3Planner, a novel practical solver to this problem in production. Specifically, we develop a structure-driven encoder based on graph neural network (GNN) for concise structure encoding, and design a new learning framework with optical-centric layer compression/reconstruction and rule-aided reinforcement learning (RL) for fast convergence and high performance. Extensive experiments on nine real topologies demonstrate that T3Planner scales to large optical networks with hundreds of sites, saves 46.6% cost, and supports $3.12\times $ more demand when compared to related existing approaches.

In systems biology, gene regulatory networks can well reveal complex biological systems and dynamic biological processes. Traditional gene regulatory network reconstruction methods ignore dynamic biological processes. A gene regulatory network reconstruction method based on transfer entropy and single-cell dynamic time series data is proposed to solve this problem. And from a theoretical point of view, the possibility and rationality of transfer entropy in the application of big data and causal reasoning are proved in detail. Firstly, the method construct pseudo-time series dynamic gene expression data based on trajectory inference. Secondly, The transfer entropy is used to calculate the directional transfer information between paired genes, and screen the major gene regulatory relationships. Finally, remove the indirect gene regulation relationship according to the data processing inequality, and construct the gene regulation network. This method takes the single cell sequencing data of early mouse embryo blood development as an example, and selects TENET and DynGENIE3 algorithms as comparisons, which proves the feasibility and effectiveness of this method from the theoretical and experimental perspectives. The experimental results not only identify the key cell development regulatory factors and regulatory relationships, but also consume less time. It can not only provide important reference value and assumptions for biological disturbance experiment, but also reduce the time cost and research cost of biological experiment. © 2023 SPIE.

Amidst global population growth and escalating food demands, real-time agricultural monitoring is crucial for ensuring food security. During the initial stages of crop growth, however, it faces significant challenges in obtaining accurate ground truth data via remote sensing, thereby impeding effective crop classification. Traditional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models, although effective in image processing and feature extraction within computer vision, are notably limited in their ability to handle the high dimensionality and complex spectral information inherent in hyperspectral non-image remote sensing data. To address this problem, we designed an enhanced CNN model, CBM-CNN. The CBM-CNN incorporates additional convolutional layers (C), batch normalization (B), and MLP(M) to convert one-dimensional data into two-dimensional data for classification, thus improving the processing efficiency of highly nonlinear data features. Building on CBM-CNN, we add multiple attention mechanisms (CBMM-CNN) to enhance feature extraction capabilities. The Siamese CBMM-CNN (SCBMM-CNN) is employed for in-depth learning of data features, with supervised learning precisely adjusting the model to improve classification performance. Experimental results on hyperspectral remote sensing datasets demonstrate that SCBMM-CNN outperforms traditional machine learning models (PCA-RF, GBDT, GMO-SVM, Random Forest, Decision Tree) and deep learning models (CNN, CNN-LSTM) in terms of accuracy, recall rate, F1 score, and kappa coefficient. These results confirm that SCBMM-CNN significantly improves crop classification accuracy and provides a novel method for early crop growth classification. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Visible-thermal Person Re-identification (VT Re-ID) is a challenging task in all-weather surveillance system. Existing methods focus on extracting the modality-shared features, ignoring the discriminative inter-modality complementary features. To tackle this issue, we propose the multi-branch modality residual complementary learning method consisting of modality residual complementary learning (MRCL) module and multi-branch feature learning (MBFL) module. The MRCL module can be easily integrated into existing CNN and Transformer baselines and drive the network to focus on both intra-modality and inter-modality information simultaneously. On one hand, we adopt the basic two-stream network to obtain the intra-modality features, on the other hand, we feed the residual image acquired by cross-modality correlation saliency erasing operation to another two-stream network to capture the inter-modality complementary features. Moreover, we employ the MBFL module to capture local spatial features and local channel features and integrate them with global features to increase the discriminability and robustness of the ultimate representations for handling intra-modality variations. The extensive experiments on RegDB and SYSU-MM01 datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method compared with state-of-the-art methods. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Throughput-oriented associated transaction assignment in sharding blockchains for IoT social data storage

Blockchain is a viable solution to provide data integrity for the enormous volume of 5G IoT social data, while we need to break through the throughput bottleneck of blockchain. Sharding is a promising technology to solve the problem of low throughput in blockchains. However, cross-shard communication hinders the effective improvement of blockchain throughput. Therefore, it is critical to reasonably allocate transactions to different shards to improve blockchain throughput. Existing research on blockchain sharding mainly focuses on shards formation, configuration, and consensus, while ignoring the negative impact of cross-shard communication on blockchain throughput. Aiming to maximize the throughput of transaction processing, we study how to allocate blockchain transactions to shards in this paper. We propose an Associated Transaction assignment algorithm based on Closest Fit (ATCF). ATCF classifies associated transactions into transaction groups which are then assigned to different shards in the non-ascending order of transaction group sizes periodically. Within each epoch, ATCF tries to select a shard that can handle all the transactions for each transaction group. If there are multiple such shards, ATCF selects the shard with the remaining processing capacity closest to the number of transactions in the transaction group. When no such shard exists, ATCF chooses the shard with the largest remaining processing capacity for the transaction group. The transaction groups that cannot be completely processed within the current epoch will be allocated in the subsequent epochs. We prove that ATCF is a 2-approximation algorithm for the associated transaction assignment problem. Simulation results show that ATCF can effectively improve the blockchain throughput and reduce the number of cross-shard transactions.

Many existing knowledge graph embedding methods learn semantic representations for entities by using graph neural networks (GNN) to harvest their intrinsic relevances. However, these methods mostly represent every entity with one coarse-grained representation, without considering the variation of the semantics of an entity under the context of different relations. To tackle this problem, we propose a method to learn multiple representations of an entity, with each emphasizing one specific aspect of information contained in the entity. During training and testing, only the representation that is most relevant to the considered relation is selected and shown to the model, leading to the relation-selective representations. To enable the selection of representations according to the relation, we first propose to incorporate a relation-controlled gating mechanism into the original GNN, which is used to decide which and how much information can flow into the next updating stage of the GNN. Then, a mixture of relation-level and entity-level negative sample generation methods is further developed to enhance semantic information contained in relation-selective entity representations under the framework of contrastive learning. Experiments on three benchmarks show that our proposed model outperforms all strong baselines. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Bilingual lexicon induction (BLI) can transfer knowledgefrom well- to under- resourced language, and has been widelyapplied to various NLP tasks. Recent work on BLI is projection-based that learns a mapping to connect source and target embedding spaces, with the isomorphism assumption. Unfortunately, the isomorphism assumption doesn't hold gener-ally, especially in typologically distant language pairs. Moreover, without supervised signals guiding, the training will further com-plicates BLI, making the performance of unsupervised methods unsatisfactory. To broke the restrict of isomorphism, we propose a semi-supervised method for distant BLI tasks, named A Semi-supervised Bilingual Lexicon Induction method in Latent Space based on Bidirectional Adversarial Model. First, two latent spaces are learned by two autoencoders for source and target domain independently to weaken the constraint of isomorphism in the embedding spaces. Then we add a few pairs of dictionary to learn the initial mapping to connect the Latent Space. Last, based on initial mapping, Cycle-Consistency is combined with Distance constraint constraint to maintain the geometry structure of both embedding spaces stable in the learning of bi-direction mapping based on adversarial model. By conducting extensive experiments, our method gets state-of-the-art results on most language pairs, especially with significant improvements on distant language pairs. © 2021 IEEE.

The task of image-guided point cloud completion aims to leverage information from images to address uncertainty issues in the completion inference of point clouds. The key challenge in this setting lies in how to effectively combine features extracted from both modalities. Due to the large domain discrepancy between the image and point cloud, existing methods that use cross-modal attention to directly fuse features have increased attention on redundant information and noise from different modalities, resulting in poor feature fusion performance. Hence, by introducing multi-modal fusion transformers that use bottleneck tokens, we enabled point cloud feature to learn image feature through information bridges, leading to improved point cloud completion performance. Our method can not only benefit from RGB images, but also from sketches with less feature information but more emphasis on edge information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method enhances the quality of point cloud completion and outperforms other state-of-the-art methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Network monitoring and measurement is an important part of realizing the network digital twin. However, it introduces the problem of high cost when obtaining the status data of physical networks. Therefore, to efficiently achieve network observability, we first introduce potential techniques and network scenarios for implementing network measurements. Then, a High-Yield Segment Routing over IPv6 based In-band Network Telemetry (HY-SRv6-INT) system is proposed in this paper. In particular, we design the HY-SRv6-INT system architecture. It consists of IPv6 switches implemented by the P4 language and a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controller containing the HY-SRv6-INT application. Next, we experimentally demonstrate a packet-level path-associated network measurement process. In addition, the performance of the HY-SRv6-INT system is also quantitatively evaluated to verify its advantages. Predicting student performance is a fundamental task in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs), by which we can learn about students’ knowledge level and provide personalized teaching strategies for them. Researchers have made plenty of efforts on this task. They either leverage educational psychology methods to predict students’ scores according to the learned knowledge proficiency, or make full use of Collaborative Filtering (CF) models to represent latent factors of students and exercises. However, most of these methods either neglect the exercise-specific characteristics (e.g., exercise materials), or cannot fully explore the high-order interactions between students, exercises, as well as knowledge concepts. To this end, we propose a Graph-based Exercise- and knowledge-Aware Learning Network for accurate student score prediction. Specifically, we learn students’ mastery of exercises and knowledge concepts respectively to model the two-fold effects of exercises and knowledge concepts. Then, to model the high-order interactions, we apply graph convolution techniques in the prediction process. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets prove the effectiveness of our proposed Graph-EKLN. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
