The mountainous areas of Southwest China are crucial regions for hydropower resource development. The unique geological environment and numerous constructed hydropower stations make landslides the primary geological hazard for the region. Therefore, the deformation monitoring and mechanism analysis of reservoir landslides have attracted extensive attention from the academic community. The Maoergai Reservoir (MEGR) is located in the middle reaches of the Heishui River in Sichuan Province, China. Following impoundment, numerous active slopes have arisen in the reservoir area, with the Xierguazi-Mawo landslide complex (XMLC) potentially being the most threatening. In this paper, we first acquired the surface displacement of the MEGR area, before and after impoundment, using time series Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) analysis of the ALOS-1/PALSAR-1, ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 and Sentinel-1 datasets. Then, the three-dimensional (3D) deformation field was inverted by combining multi-track InSAR observations and a topography-constrained model. Results show the presence of 47 active landslides within the 675 km2 reservoir area, a significant increase compared to the seven landslides identified prior to impoundment. Based on the derived 3D velocity vectors, we found that the motion of the XMLC exhibits heterogeneity in terms of spatial and temporal patterns. Further, the displacement time series of all detected active landslides suggests that irrigation and water level fluctuations are two major factors influencing the kinematic behaviors of landslides. Irrigation accelerates landslide movement and thus permanently alters the deformation trend, while water level fluctuations cause seasonal oscillations in the displacement time series with a time lag of approximately 100 days. Evolutionary multitasking algorithms use information exchange among individuals in a population to solve multiple optimization problems simultaneously. Negative transfer is a critical factor that affects the performance of evolutionary multitasking algorithms. In this study, we propose an innovative approach to mitigate negative transfer in evolutionary multitasking algorithms. The proposed approach is grounded in rigorous theoretical analysis, which provides valuable theoretical insights into the design of an optimal linear crossover operator for mitigating negative transfer. By identifying interpretable conditions, we establish a solid theoretical foundation to prevent negative transfer in diverse scenarios. Building upon these findings, we theoretically derive a closed-form expression for the optimal crossover operator and propose practical design methods based on approximations. Furthermore, we integrate the proposed optimal crossover operator into a fundamental evolutionary multitasking algorithm framework. The resultant algorithm is comparable or superior to other state-of-the-art methods. Empirical validation through comprehensive experiments confirms the effectiveness of our theoretical findings. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

Accurate brain tumor segmentation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images requires the integration of multimodal data in effective collaborative learning. However, clinical scenarios often face missing modalities, significantly impacting segmentation performance. In this paper, we propose the penta-encoder with medical transformer (Penta-MedTrans) for incomplete multimodal learning, which consists of four main components: a modality-specific encoder (MSE), a modality-dynamic encoder (MDE), a multimodal fusion module (MMFM) and a convolutional decoder. The MSE extracts unique features for each modality, while the MDE captures inter-modal semantics to address missing modalities. The MMFM establishes and aligns long-range correlations between modal-invariant features and global semantics of tumor regions. The convolutional decoder generates robust segmentation results by progressively upsampling and fusing modality-invariant features. We extensively validated our method on the BraTS 2020 and BraTS 2021 datasets for brain tumor segmentation. Results showed that our method outperforms SOTA for incomplete multimodal brain tumor segmentation across most subsets.

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) is widely used for the detection and diagnosis of various pathologies due to its non-invasive nature. However, its signal acquisition process is relatively slow and susceptible to motions. In order to accelerate reconstruction process, many deep learning-based methods have been developed in recent years to achieve promising results, while most of them are supervised based methods and require fully sampled data which are difficult to obtain in practical applications to train the network. Self-supervised based methods were proposed to deal with this problem to a certain extent, however, they are devoted only to conventional MRI data, ignoring the correlation between the directions of dMRI data. To address this issue, we propose a self-supervised fast reconstruction method for dMRI based on multi-directional assistance. The method better utilizes the information between dMRI data directions by Partition-Replace operation, cleverly constructing data pairs and designing effective self-supervised strategy for bi-directional prediction, which can overcome the problem of data incompleteness and guide the model to reconstruct unsampled signals in spite of the difficulty of acquiring fully sampled data. Experimental results show that our method achieves better reconstruction in the absence of fully sampled data, even with an 8-fold acceleration factor.

Efficient Meta Neural Heuristic for Multi-Objective Combinatorial Optimization

Recently, neural heuristics based on deep reinforcement learning have exhibited promise in solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems (MOCOPs). However, they are still struggling to achieve high learning efficiency and solution quality. To tackle this issue, we propose an efficient meta neural heuristic (EMNH), in which a meta-model is first trained and then fine-tuned with a few steps to solve corresponding single-objective subproblems. Specifically, for the training process, a (partial) architecture-shared multi-task model is leveraged to achieve parallel learning for the meta-model, so as to speed up the training;meanwhile, a scaled symmetric sampling method with respect to the weight vectors is designed to stabilize the training. For the fine-tuning process, an efficient hierarchical method is proposed to systematically tackle all the subproblems. Experimental results on the multi-objective traveling salesman problem (MOTSP), multi-objective capacitated vehicle routing problem (MOCVRP), and multi-objective knapsack problem (MOKP) show that, EMNH is able to outperform the state-of-the-art neural heuristics in terms of solution quality and learning efficiency, and yield competitive solutions to the strong traditional heuristics while consuming much shorter time. An Empirical Study on Information Extraction using Large Language Models

Human-like large language models (LLMs), especially the most powerful and popular ones in OpenAI’s GPT family, have proven to be very helpful for many natural language processing (NLP) related tasks. Therefore, various attempts have been made to apply LLMs to information extraction (IE), which is a fundamental NLP task that involves extracting information from unstructured plain text. To demonstrate the latest representative progress in LLMs’ information extraction ability, we assess the information extraction ability of GPT-4 (the latest version of GPT at the time of writing this paper) from four perspectives: Performance, Evaluation Criteria, Robustness, and Error Types. Our results suggest a visible performance gap between GPT-4 and state-of-the-art (SOTA) IE methods. To alleviate this problem, considering the LLMs’ human-like characteristics, we propose and analyze the effects of a series of simple prompt-based methods, which can be generalized to other LLMs and NLP tasks. ATHENA: An In-vehicle CAN Intrusion Detection Framework Based on Physical Characteristics of Vehicle Systems

With the growing interconnection between In-Vehicle Networks (IVNs) and external environments, intelligent vehicles are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated external network attacks. This paper proposes ATHENA, the first IVN intrusion detection framework that adopts a vehicle-cloud integrated architecture to achieve better security performance for the resource-constrained vehicular environment. Specifically, in the cloud with sufficient resources, ATHENA uses the clustering method of multi-distribution mixture model combined with deep data mining technology to generate the raw Payload Rule Bank of IVN CAN messages, and then improves the rule quality with the help of exploitation on the first-principled physical knowledge of the vehicle system, after which the payload rules are periodically sent to the vehicle terminal. At the vehicle terminal, a simple LSTM component is used to generate the Time Rule Bank representing the long-term time series dependencies and the periodic characteristics of CAN messages, but not for any detection tasks as in traditional usage scenarios, where only the generated time rules are the candidates for further IVN intrusion detection tasks. Based on both the payload and time rules generated from cloud and vehicle terminal, ATHENA can achieve efficient intrusion detection capability by simple rule-base matching operations, rather than using complex black-box reasoning of resource-intensive neural network models, which is in fact only used for rule logic generation phase instead of the actual intrusion detection phase in our framework. Comparative experimental results on the ROAD dataset, which is current the most outstanding real-world in-vehicle CAN dataset covering new instances of sophisticated and stealthy masquerade attacks, demonstrate ATHENA significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art IVN intrusion detection methods in detecting complex attacks. Fake news is usually disseminated in a multimodal form, which incorporates natural language, visual language, and so on. Therefore, many deep learning approaches are proposed to detect multimodal fake news. However, a drawback of existing methods is that they simply fuse unimodal features and ignore the latent semantic alignment of image and text modalities. In this paper, we propose a novel Multimodal Stacked Cross Attention Network (MSCA) to better align and fuse multimodal token-level textual and visual features for fake news detection. Experiments conducted on two publicly available datasets show that our method can significantly improve performance compared with other models. Furthermore, experimental analysis shows that MSCA can effectively align and fuse token-level features of multiple modalities.

Grasping the intricacies of human motion, which involve perceiving spatio-temporal dependence and multi-scale effects, is essential for predicting human motion. While humans inherently possess the requisite skills to navigate this issue, it proves to be markedly more challenging for machines to emulate. To bridge the gap, we propose the Human-like Vision and Inference System (HVIS) for human motion prediction, which is designed to emulate human observation and forecast future movements. HVIS comprises two components: the human-like vision encode (HVE) module and the human-like motion inference (HMI) module. The HVE module mimics and refines the human visual process, incorporating a retina-analog component that captures spatiotemporal information separately to avoid unnecessary crosstalk. Additionally, a visual cortex-analogy component is designed to hierarchically extract and treat complex motion features, focusing on both global and local features of human poses. The HMI is employed to simulate the multi-stage learning model of the human brain. The spontaneous learning network simulates the neuronal fracture generation process for the adversarial generation of future motions. Subsequently, the deliberate learning network is optimized for hard-to-train joints to prevent misleading learning. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance, significantly outperforming existing methods by 19.8% on Human3.6M, 15.7% on CMU Mocap, and 11.1% on G3D. A Low-rank Matching Attention based Cross-modal Feature Fusion Method for Conversational Emotion Recognition

Conversational emotion recognition (CER) is an important research topic in human-computer interactions. Although recent advancements in transformer-based cross-modal fusion methods have shown promise in CER tasks, they tend to overlook the crucial intra-modal and inter-modal emotional interaction or suffer from high computational complexity. To address this, we introduce a novel and lightweight cross-modal feature fusion method called Low-Rank Matching Attention Method (LMAM). LMAM effectively captures contextual emotional semantic information in conversations while mitigating the quadratic complexity issue caused by the self-attention mechanism. Specifically, by setting a matching weight and calculating inter-modal features attention scores row by row, LMAM requires only one-third of the parameters of self-attention methods. We also employ the low-rank decomposition method on the weights to further reduce the number of parameters in LMAM. As a result, LMAM offers a lightweight model while avoiding overfitting problems caused by a large number of parameters. Moreover, LMAM is able to fully exploit the intra-modal emotional contextual information within each modality and integrates complementary emotional semantic information across modalities by computing and fusing similarities of intra-modal and inter-modal features simultaneously. Experimental results verify the superiority of LMAM compared with other popular cross-modal fusion methods on the premise of being more lightweight. Also, LMAM can be embedded into any existing state-of-the-art CER methods in a plug-and-play manner, and can be applied to other multi-modal recognition tasks, e.g., session recommendation and humour detection, demonstrating its remarkable generalization ability.
