El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO) is the strongest interannual signal that is producedby basinscale processes in the tropical Pacific,with significant effects on weather and climate *** the past,extensive and intensive international efforts have been devoted to coupled model developments for ENSO studies.A hierarchy of coupled ocean-atmo sphere models has been formulated;in terms of their complexity,they can be categorized into intermediate coupled models(ICMs),hybrid coupled models(HCMs),and fully coupled general circulation models(CGCMs).ENSO modeling has made significant progress over the past decades,reaching a stage where coupled models can now be used to successfully predict ENSO events 6 months to one year in ***,ENSO exhibits great diversity and complexity as observed in nature,which still cannot be adequately captured by current state-of-the-art coupled models,presenting a challenge to ENSO *** primarily reviewed the long-term efforts in ENSO modeling continually and steadily made at different institutions in China;some selected representative examples are presented here to review the current status of ENSO model developments and applications,which have been actively pursued with noticeable progress being made *** ENSO simulations are very sensitive to model formulations and process representations etc.,dedicated efforts have been devoted to ENSO model developments and ***,different ocean-atmosphere coupled models have been available in China,which exhibit good model performances and have already had a variety of applications to climate modeling,including the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6).Nevertheless,large biases and uncertainties still exist in ENSO simulations and predictions,and there are clear rooms for their improvements,which are still an active area of researches and ***,model performances of ENSO simulations are assessed in terms of advantages and disadvantage

Warm water cooling has been regarded as a promising method to improve the energy efficiency of water-cooled datacenters. In warm water-cooling systems, hot spots occur as a common problem where the hybrid cooling architecture integrating thermoelectric coolers (TECs) emerges as a new remedy. Equipped with this architecture, the inlet water temperature can be raised higher, which provides more opportunities for heat recycling. However, currently, the heat absorbed from the server components is ejected directly into the water without being recycled, which leads to energy wasting. In order to further improve the energy efficiency, we propose Heat to Power (H2P), an economical and energy-recycling warm water cooling architecture, where thermoelectric generators (TEGs) harvest thermal energy from the “used” warm water and generate electricity for reusing in datacenters. Specifically, we propose some efficient optimization methods, including an economical water circulation design, fine-grained adjustments of the cooling setting and dynamic workload scheduling for increasing the power generated by TEGs. We evaluate H2P based on a real hardware prototype and cluster traces from Google and Alibaba. Experiment results show that TEGs equipped with our optimization methods can averagely generate 4.349 W, 4.203 W, and 3.979 W (4.177 W averagely) electricity on one CPU under the drastic, irregular and common workload traces, respectively. The power reusing efficiency (PRE) can reach 12.8%~16.2% (14.23% averagely) and the total cost of ownership (TCO) of datacenters can be reduced by up to 0.57%.

Chest X-ray images are currently the best available visual media for diagnosing pneumonia, which plays a crucial role in clinical care. Medical images diagnosing can be error-prone for inexperienced radiologists, while tedious and time-consuming for experienced radiologists. To address these issues, we study automatically detect pneumonia in Chest X-ray images. However, this task exists several challenges. First, abnormal regions of pneumonia are difficult to identify due to the noise interference from other tissue and lesions. Second, the features of lung regions are usually essential information for diagnosis. With the pneumonia disease happens in lung areas, only training CNNs using global image may be affected by the irrelevant noisy regions. Third, the appearance of pneumonia in X-ray images is often vague, can overlap with other diagnoses. To cope with these challenges, we first introduce a lung segmentation network, which segments the lung from the original images. Then, develop a feature extraction model, which incorporates global and local features for pneumonia classification. Finally, build a cooperative learning framework, which merges bounding boxes (localization of pneu-monia) from two cooperative models. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods on the Kaggles RSNA Pneumonia Detection Challenge dataset and reaches excellent performance with the level of the top 1% in this competition. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

XTQA: Span-Level Explanations for Textbook Question Answering

Textbook Question Answering (TQA) is the task of correctly answering diagram or non-diagram questions given large multi-modal contexts consisting of abundant essays and diagrams. In real-world scenarios, an explainable TQA system plays a key role in deepening humans’ understanding of learned knowledge. However, there is no work to investigate how to provide explanations currently. To address this issue, we devise a novel architecture towards span-level eXplanations for TQA (XTQA). In this paper, spans are the combinations of sentences within a paragraph. The key idea is to consider the entire textual context of a lesson as candidate evidence, and then use our proposed coarse-to-fine grained Explanation Extracting (EE) algorithm to narrow down the evidence scope and extract the span-level explanations with varying lengths for answering different questions. The EE algorithm can also be integrated into other TQA methods to make them explainable and improve the TQA performance. Experimental results show that XTQA obtains the best overall explanation result (mIoU) of 52.38% on the first 300 questions of CK12-QA test splits, demonstrating the explainability of our method (non-diagram: 150 and diagram: 150). The results also show that XTQA achieves the best TQA performance of 36.46% and 36.95% on the aforementioned splits respectively. Most existing popular methods for learning graph embedding only consider fixed-order global structural features and lack structures hierarchical representation. To address this weakness, we propose a novel graph embedding algorithm named GraphCSC that realizes classification based on skeleton information using fixed-order structures learned in anonymous random walks manner, and component information using different size subgraphs. Two graphs are similar if their skeletons and components are both similar, thus in our model, we integrate both of them together into embeddings as graph homogeneity characterization. We demonstrate our model on different datasets in comparison with a comprehensive list of up-to-date state-of-the-art baselines, and experiments show that our work is superior in real-world graph classification tasks. © 2021, CC BY.

Severe temperature rise of mass concrete caused by cement hydration can lead to thermal cracks which further reduce the durability of concrete. In this study, three types of hydration heat controlling materials (HHCMs) respectively containing pure hydroxyl (polyvinyl alcohol, PVA), carboxyl (polyacrylic acid, PAA) and ester groups (maleic acid-ethylene glycol ester, P(MA-EG)) were synthesized and mixed with cement-based materials, and the hydration heat and setting time of cement pastes and the adiabatic temperature rise and strength of mortars were tested. The results showed that PAA and P(MA-EG) reduced the peak value of hydration heat release rate of cement paste by 77.45% and 62.28% respectively, and prolonged 54.14h and 15.56h respectively. The cumulative heat release within 72h decreased by 42.42% and 64.50% respectively, and the central temperatures of mortars containing PAA and P(MA-EG) decreased by 11.9 °C and 18.5 °C respectively. The mechanism of HHCMs was further revealed in terms of adsorption capacity, hydrodynamic radius, and conductivity and hydration products of cement pastes. The HHCMs containing carboxyl or hydroxyl groups, adsorbed on cement particles by Ca 2+ complexation, while the HHCMs containing ester groups, i.e. P(MA-EG), continuously hydrolyzed to carboxyl groups in alkaline cement pastes, which hydrolysis rate changed with the hydration temperature of cement-based materials to further regulate the hydration process. This study aims to provide technical feasibility and theoretical basis for exploring new avenues of synthesizing HHCMs with different functional groups. These novel HHCMs with great potentials can be as new admixtures to reduce thermal cracks in concrete. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Short text classification methods have achieved significant progress and wide application on text data such as Twitter and Weibo. However, the extremely short chinese texts like tax invoice data are different with traditional short texts in lackness of contextual semantic information, feature sparseness and extremely short length. The existing short text classification methods are difficult to achieve a satisfactory performance in these texts. To address these problems, this paper proposes a text classification method based on bidirectional semantic extension for extremely short texts like Chinese tax invoice data. More specifically, firstly, the Chinese knowledge graph is introduced for extending bidirectional semantic of texts and label data to expand the extremely short texts and ease the problem of feature sparseness;secondly,the hash vectorization is used to avoid the semantic problem caused by the lackness of contextual information. Experimental results conducted the real tax invoice dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Corn is the largest grain crop in China. With the increasing use of transgenic corn in agricultural production, accurately identifying transgenic corn varieties has become crucial for ensuring food safety and quality. This study combines terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) technology with a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify five transgenic corn varieties. First, the time-domain spectra of transgenic corn were collected, and the frequency-domain spectra and absorption coefficient spectra were calculated. Next, abnormal data were removed using the isolation forest algorithm. The data were then preprocessed using the first derivative (FD) and principal component analysis (PCA) to extract effective spectral features. Based on these features, classification models were constructed using support vector machine (PCA-SVM), grid search optimized SVM (PCA-GS-SVM), particle swarm optimization SVM (PCA-PSO-SVM), and hippopotamus optimization SVM (PCA-HO-SVM). Additionally, a one-dimensional CNN (1D-CNN) model was built using the full-band spectral data. The results indicate that the performance of the 1D-CNN model with FD preprocessing was significantly improved, with an accuracy of 96.68 % and a misclassification rate of only 3.32 %. The study effectively classifies transgenic corn with high accuracy, showing potential for widespread application in quality detection. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
