Pine wilt disease (PWD) is regarded as one of the most serious conifer diseases affecting pines worldwide. Past research on the spread of pine wilt nematodes (PWNs, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) can provide the theoretical basis for the prevention and control of PWD in forests and reduce the ecological and economic losses caused by PWD. To date, an in-depth study of the driving mechanisms behind short-distance PWD spread is lacking. In this study, we collected PWD forest subcompartment data in Fushun, China, and analysed the roles of natural and human factors on the short-distance transmission of PWD;the analysed factors included the number of neighbouring PWD-infected forest subcompartments, the canopy density, the slope aspect and different traffic corridor levels. The results suggested that natural factors dominated the short-distance transmission of PWD, contributing 84% of the observed spread, while human factors contributed 16%. Among the analysed natural factors, the spatial spill-over effect of nearby PWD-infected subcompartments contributed the most to short-distance PWD transmission. With the help of a beetle medium, PWD can spread to nearby forest subcompartments, and this spatial PWD spill-over effect showed a linearly decaying trend as the distance to neighbouring subcompartments increased. Different traffic corridor levels exhibited significant PWD transmission force differences. County roadways and highways had great impacts, while other traffic corridors had relatively small impacts. For each additional 1 km of distance from a county roadway, highway, national or provincial roadway, the PWD infection risks in forest subcompartments were reduced by 16%, 12%, 5% and 3%, respectively. In agriculture, specifically livestock monitoring, drones' ability to track multiple targets is essential for advancing the field. However, limited computing resources and unpredictable drone movements often cause issues like ambiguous video frames, object obstructions, and size deviations. These inconsistencies reduce tracking accuracy, making traditional algorithms inadequate for handling drone footage. This study introduces an enhanced deep learning-based multi-target drone tracker framework that enables real-time processing. The proposed method combines object detection and tracking by leveraging consecutive frame pairs to extract and share features, enhancing computational efficiency. It employs diverse loss functions to address class and sample distribution imbalances and includes a composite deblurring module to enhance detection accuracy. Object association utilizes a dual regress bounding box technique, aiding in object identification verification and predictive motion. live tracking is achieved by predicting object locations in subsequent frames, enabling real-time tracking. Evaluation against leading benchmarks shows that the system improves precision and speed, achieving a 4.3 % increase in Multi-Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTA) and a 7.7 % boost in F1 score. © 2024 The Authors

Unveiling Amplified Cooling Effect from Increased Rice Paddy Coverage in Northeast China: Insights from a Decomposed Temperature Metric Analysis

Massive rice paddy expansion in Northeastern China has been documented to change land surface temperature (lST) through both biophysical and biochemical mechanisms. However, the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of the effects on lST, the changes along with the rice paddy proportion, and the detailed biophysical mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we analyzed the differences in lST (dlST), albedo (dAlbedo), and ET (dET) between rice paddy and adjacent dryland, using the "space-for-time" and pair-wise comparison approach based on surface parameter datasets and 10-m crop type maps in 2019. Our results showed that rice paddy expansion reduced the daytime lST (-2.02 ± 1.03℃) and albedo (-1.02 ± 1.07%) but increased the nighttime lST (0.76 ± 0.41℃) and ET (0.03 ± 1.20 mm/8 days) in Northeastern China during the growing season (May to September). The effects were stronger in spring than in summer and autumn. Spatially, Sanjiang Plain showed a daytime cooling effect in late months and a nighttime warming effect in earlier months than other regions. For every one percent increase in the proportion of rice paddies, the daytime dlST decreased by -1.32 ℃, nighttime dlST increased by 0.48 ℃, dAlbedo decreased by 0.64%, while dET showed no significant change. Further, we found that sensible heat flux and latent heat flux alternatively varied and dominated the cooling effects in the growing season. These results emphasized that spatial heterogeneity and intrinsic biophysical mechanisms of land cover changes should be considered in model simulations of land cover changes, crop plantation plans, and regional climate mitigation strategies. © 2023, The Authors. Cropland abandonment is spreading from developed countries to developing countries such as *** abandonment in China commonly occurs in mountainous areas due to their specific natural and geographical ***,due to the lack of dependable monitoring methods via medium-high-resolution remote sensing images,the scale of abandoned cropland in many mountainous areas of China is unclear,and the mechanisms driving cropland abandonment have not been clearly *** overcome these limitations,we took Zhong County of Chongqing in China as an example,and used landsat 8 OlI_TIRS remote sensing image data to develop a method for mapping abandoned cropland in mountainous areas based on annual land use change *** the same time,the ridge regression method was adopted to analyze the factors influencing cropland *** analyses showed that the cropland abandonment rate in Zhong County of Chongqing was as high as 7.86%,while the overall accuracy of identifying abandoned cropland was as high as 90.82%.Among the social and economic factors that affect cropland abandonment,the rural population,economic development,and livestock husbandry development were the most important *** the land parcel scale,large-scale cropland abandonment occurred in areas at elevations above 650 m or with slopes of more than 15°.

China is a large agricultural country, the aspect of advanced farming technology for securing food production and safety remains inadequate. Intercropping is a reliable technology in safety production from contaminated soil. A field-scale experiment was carried out to unravel how plant species and pattern affect the growth and Cd uptake of Chinese cabbage from historical Cd contaminated land. Among all the intercropping systems designed in this study, one row of Chinese cabbage intercropping with one row of Solanum nigrum l. is the best planting mode (high yields (2.78 kg/m2) and low Cd accumulation (0.02 mg/kg) of Chinese cabbage). Combined with the in-depth joint analysis of diverse soil physicochemical features (soil nutrient characteristics and microbial community structure), biomass yield and quality, and soil microbiological properties, we elaborated that two measures (screening hyperaccumulation types and controlling planting strip width) were the major factors in determining the growth of the aboveground and underground parts of Chinese cabbage respectively, thus directly regulating the application effectiveness of intercropping technology. The intertwined mechanisms (interspecific and intraspecific relationship) of different intercropping systems are summarized, which include better utilization of space, light and other resources in the aboveground part, bioavailability of nutrient, drive of soil bacteria and alleviated soil Cd stress in the underground part, etc. Our research outputs indicate the effectiveness and feasibility of intercropping can be improved by optimizing the streamline configuration and plant mode, which provide theory of reference and practical evidence for warranting the food safety and agricultural soil remediation simultaneously. © 2023, The Authors. Integrated health risk assessment strategies for emerging organic pollutants and heavy metals that coexist in water/soil media are lacking. Contents of perfluoroalkyl compounds and potentially toxic elements in multiple media were determined by investigating a county where a landfill and a tungsten mine coexist. The spatial characteristics and sources of contaminants were predicted by Geostatistics-based and multivariate statistical analysis, and their comprehensive health risks were assessed. The average contents of perfluorooctane acid, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, arsenic, and cadmium in groundwater were 3.21, 0.77, 1.69, and 0.14 μg l−1, respectively;the maximum content of cadmium in soils and rice highly reached 2.12 and 1.52 mg kg−1, respectively. In soils, the contribution of mine lag to cadmium was 99 %, and fertilizer and pesticide to arsenic was 59.4 %. While in groundwater, arsenic, cadmium and perfluoroalkyl compounds near the landfill mainly came from leachate leakage. Significant correlations were found between arsenic in groundwater and arsenic and cadmium in soils, as well as perfluoroalkyl compounds in groundwater and pH and sulfate. Based on these correlations, the geographically optimal similarity model predicted high-level arsenic in groundwater near the tungsten mine and cadmium/perfluoroalkyl compounds around the landfill. The combination of analytic network process, entropy weighting method and game theory-based trade-off method with risk assessment model can assess the comprehensive risks of multiple pollutants. Using this approach, a high health-risk zone located around the landfill, which was mainly attributed to the presence of arsenic, cadmium and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, was found. Overall, perfluoroalkyl compounds in groundwater altered the spatial pattern of health risks in an arsenic‑cadmium contaminated area. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Regional Differences and Dynamic Evolution of Indirect Carbon Emissions from Household Consumption in Yunnan Province

low-carbon lifestyle has emerged as one of the most significant ways for reducing carbon emissions. Indirect carbon emissions from household consumption (ICEHC) have emerged as a new area of concern in carbon emissions reduction. To gain a deeper understanding of the regional differences and dynamic evolution in ICEHC in Yunnan Province, we measure the ICEHC and ICEHC intensity of cities in Yunnan Province from 2012 to 2021 based on input-output analysis and consumer lifestyle approach. The Dagum Gini coefficient, the kernel density estimator, and the coefficient of variation method are applied to quantitatively analyze the regional disparities, dynamic evolution patterns, and convergence of ICEHC intensity in Yunnan Province. The results show that Yunnan Province's ICEHC are rising annually, but the intensity of those emissions is decreasing, with an average annual decline rate of 4.19%. Northwest Yunnan has the lowest carbon emission intensity, west Yunnan has the highest, and the central Yunnan region is closest to the overall average value of Yunnan Province. Regarding the regional differences of the ICEHC intensity in Yunnan Province, it presents a spatial distribution pattern of "high in the south and west, and low in the north and east". The overall Gini coefficient of ICEHC intensity gradually declines, with intra-regional differences in ICEHC intensity primarily coming from central and northwest Yunnan. In terms of dynamic evolution, the dispersion degree of ICEHC intensity is declining in Yunnan Province as a whole and in each region, and there is no obvious multipolar differentiation, but the ICEHC intensity in central Yunnan is significantly higher than that in other regions. Finally, in terms of convergence characteristics, the ICEHC intensity in each region of Yunnan Province is consistent with σ-convergence characteristics, and the mean value of the overall coefficient of variation is 0.35 and shows a trend of gradually decreasing variation. © 2023, T

Carbon Neutral Winter Olympics 2022 Ascribe to Carbon Reduction Measures, Afforestation, and Covid-19 Restrictions

The 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing claims to be carbon neutral by embedding green measures at all phases of the event, even under the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic. Here based on a comprehensive framework of 27 indicators to systematically evaluate the total carbon emission before, during, and after the Games, we found that the 2022 Winter Olympic Games is beyond carbon neutrality, as a carbon sink of 2316 (2093-2538 at 95% confidence) ktons, largely due to carbon reduction from reusing old venues and the fewer audience due to China’s strict COVID-19 restrictions by 1721 and 326 ktons CO2 respectively. Besides, the carbon sink from afforestation is 1709 (1404–2013) ktons. Recycling measures, especially reusing sports venues, contributed much higher to carbon neutrality than low-carbon technologies, suggesting optimal pathways of emission reduction are crucial. The study demonstrated the potential of broader carbon-neutral activities in China. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
