A gradient analysis on urban sprawl and urban landscape pattern between 1985 and 2000 in the Pearl River Delta, China

Urbanization is an irreversible trend worldwide, especially in rapidly developing China. Accelerated urbanization has resulted in rapid urban sprawl and urban landscape pattern changes. Quantifying the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban land use and landscape pattern not only can reveal the characteristics of social transfer and economic development, but also can provide insights into the driving mechanisms of land use changes. In this study, we integrated remote sensing (RS), geographic information system (GIS), landscape metrics, and gradient analysis to quantitatively compare the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use, urban sprawl, and landscape pattern for nine cities in the Pearl River Delta from 1985aEuro'2000. For the whole study region, urbanization was obvious. The results show an increase in urban buildup land and shrinkage of cropland in the Pearl River Delta. However, the nine cities differed greatly in terms of the process and magnitude of urban sprawl for both the spatial and temporal dimensions. This was most evident for the cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Gradient analysis on urban landscape changes could deepen understanding of the stages of urban development and provide a scientific foundation for future urban planning and land management strategies in China.

The well-facilitated farmland projects (WFFPs) involve the typical sustainable intensification of farmland use and play a key role in raising food production in China. However, whether such WFFPs can enhance the nitrogen (N) use efficiency and reduce environmental impacts is still unclear. Here, we examined the data from 502 valid questionnaires collected from WFFPs in the major grain-producing area, the Huang-Huai-Hai Region (HHHR) in China, with 429 samples for wheat, 328 for maize, and 122 for rice. We identified gaps in N use efficiency (NUE) and N losses from the production of the three crops between the sampled WFFPs and counties based on the statistical data. The results showed that compared to the county-level (wheat, 39.1%; maize, 33.8%; rice, 35.1%), the NUEs for wheat (55.2%), maize (52.1%), and rice (50.2%) in the WFFPs were significantly improved ( P <0.05). In addition, the intensities of ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization (9.9−12.2 kg N ha −1 ), N leaching (6.5−16.9 kg N ha −1 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions (1.2−1.6 kg N ha −1 ) from crop production in the sampled WFFPs were significantly lower than the county averages ( P <0.05). simulations showed that if the N rates are reduced by 10.0, 15.0, or 20.0% for the counties, the NUEs of wheat, maize, and rice in the HHHR will increase by 2.9−6.3, 2.4−5.2, or 2.6−5.7%, respectively. If the N rate is reduced to the WFFP level in each county, the NUEs of the three crops will increase by 12.9−19.5%, and the N leaching, NH 3 , and N 2 O emissions will be reduced by 48.9−56.2, 37.4−42.9, and 46.0−66.5%, respectively. Our findings highlight that efficient N management practices in sustainable intensive farmland have considerable potential for reducing environmental impacts.

Building on near-real-time and spatially explicit estimates of daily carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, here we present and analyze a new city-level dataset of fossil fuel and cement emissions. Carbon Monitor Cities provides daily, city-level estimates of emissions from January 2019 through December 2021 for 1500 cities in 46 countries, and disaggregates five sectors: power generation, residential (buildings), industry, ground transportation, and aviation. The goal of this dataset is to improve the timeliness and temporal resolution of city-level emission inventories and includes estimates for both functional urban areas and city administrative areas that are consistent with global and regional totals. Comparisons with other datasets (i.e. CEADs, MEIC, Vulcan, and CDP) were performed, and we estimate the overall uncertainty range to be ±21.7%. Carbon Monitor Cities is a near-real-time, city-level emission dataset that includes cities around the world, including the first estimates for many cities in low-income countries. Bowen ratio (β) is the ratio of sensible heat (H) to latent heat (LE), which reflected the energy balance and partitioning process between soil, vegetation, and atmosphere. Revealing the spatial patterns of β would benefit understanding the variation of energy partitioning in terrestrial ecosystems and its reciprocal relationship with environmental change. Here, we calculated β by integrating sensible and latent heat flux values from 80 flux observation sites based on eddy covariance method in ChinaFLUX to analyze the spatial pattern and dominant factors of β in China. Results showed that terrestrial ecosystems in China had an average β of 0.64±0.47, suggesting the strong regulating effect of ecosystems on the radiative warming in China. β significantly varied with ecosystem types in which desert has the highest β (2.08) while wetland showed the lowest β (0.37). β of terrestrial ecosystems in China showed a significant latitudinal pattern, increasing linearly with the increase of latitude, and showed specific patterns in forest and cropland ecosystems. However, β did not present a clear longitudinal and vertical pattern in different ecosystems except cropland. The spatial pattern of β was dominated by vegetation factors including gross primary productivity (GPP). However, the dominant role of vegetation factors varied with the climate and soil conditions, which showing that the dominant role of GPP gradually decreased from the hot and humid subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest region to the low temperature arid temperate desert region. These findings demonstrated the spatial variation and its mechanism of terrestrial ecosystems β and provided insight into the future of vegetation mitigation of global climate change. © 2023, The Authors. Regional differentiation of ecological conservation and its zonal suitability at the county level in China

China＇s investments, financial incentives and deductions in terms of ecological conservation are based at the county level. Therefore, the monitoring and assessment of the effects of ecological conservation at the county level is important to provide a scientific basis for the assessment of the ecological and environmental quality at the county scale. This paper quantitatively estimated the dynamics of high-quality ecosystems and vegetation coverage over the past 15 years, and their relationships with the number of ecological conservation programs at the county level were analyzed. Then, the effects of ecological conservation measures on ecological changes at the county level and their regional suitability were as- sessed and discussed. The results showed that counties with a percentage of high-quality ecosystems greater than 50% were primarily distributed in northeastern China, southern subtropical China and the southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and those with a percentage lower than 20% were mostly distributed in northwestern China, the southwestern karst region and the North China Plain. In recent decades, ecological conservation has focused on ecol- ogically fragile regions; more than five ecological conservation programs have been imple- mented in most counties of the Three River Source Region in Qinghai Province, southeastern Tibet, western Sichuan, the Qilian Mountains, southern Xinjiang and other western regions, while only one or zero have been implemented in the eastern coastal area of China. Over the past 15 years, the proportional area of high-quality ecosystems has increased in approxi- mately 53% of counties. The vegetation coverage of counties in the Loess Plateau, Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei （Jing-Jin-Ji）, Sichuan-Guizhou-Chongqing, and Guangdong-Guangxi provincial-level areas has increased significantly. Characteristic of tradeoffs between timber production and carbon storage for plantation under harvesting impact: A case study of Huitong National Research Station of Forest Ecosystem

The tradeoffs and optimizations of ecosystem services are the key research fields of ecology and *** is necessary to maximize the overall benefit of timber production and carbon storage for forest ecological development in *** selected the Huitong National Research Station of Forest Ecosystem as our study area,and used In VEST model to evaluate timber production and carbon storage *** results showed that:(1)While timber production increased with harvesting intensity over the planning horizon,carbon storage *** were tradeoffs between timber production and carbon storage according to the significant negative relationship.(2)While the overall benefit of timber production and carbon storage increased with harvesting intensity,the value of tradeoffs decreased.T1 and T2 scenarios,with harvesting intensity of 10%–20% every 10 years,are the optimum management regimes for the two ecosystem services to gain more benefit and less tradeoffs.(3)The current harvesting intensity in Huitong County was slightly higher than the optimum harvesting *** practical dimension,these findings suggested that obvious objectives are needed to formulate the corresponding countermeasures of tradeoffs,in order to realize the improvement of ecosystem services and the optimization of ecosystem structures.

With the urgent need to implement the EU countries pledges and to monitor the effectiveness of Green Deal plan, Monitoring Reporting and Verification tools are needed to track how emissions are changing for all the sectors. Current official inventories only provide annual estimates of national CO2 emissions with a lag of 1+ year which do not capture the variations of emissions due to recent shocks including COVID lockdowns and economic rebounds, war in Ukraine. Here we present a near-real-time country-level dataset of daily fossil fuel and cement emissions from January 2019 through December 2021 for 27 EU countries and UK, which called Carbon Monitor Europe. The data are calculated separately for six sectors: power, industry, ground transportation, domestic aviation, international aviation and residential. Daily CO2 emissions are estimated from a large set of activity data compiled from different sources. The goal of this dataset is to improve the timeliness and temporal resolution of emissions for European countries, to inform the public and decision makers about current emissions changes in Europe. © 2022, CC BY.

Resolving regional carbon budgets is critical for informing land-based mitigation policy. For nine regions covering nearly the whole globe, we collected inventory estimates of carbon-stock changes complemented by satellite estimates of biomass changes where inventory data are missing. The net land–atmospheric carbon exchange(NEE) was calculated by taking the sum of the carbon-stock change and lateral carbon fluxes from crop and wood trade, and riverine-carbon export to the ocean. Summing up NEE from all regions, we obtained a global ‘bottom-up’ NEE for net land anthropogenic CO2uptake of –2.2 ± 0.6 Pg C yr-1consistent with the independent top-down NEE from the global atmospheric carbon budget during 2000–2009. This estimate is so far the most comprehensive global bottom-up carbon budget accounting, which set up an important milestone for global carbon-cycle studies. By decomposing NEE into component fluxes, we found that global soil heterotrophic respiration amounts to a source of CO2of 39 Pg C yr-1with an interquartile of 33–46 Pg C yr-1—a much smaller portion of net primary productivity than previously reported.
