Intensified risk to ecosystem productivity under climate change in the arid/humid transition zone in northern China

Assessing the climate change risk faced by the ecosystems in the arid/humid transition zone(AHTZ)in northern China holds scientific significance to climate change *** simulated the net primary productivity(NPP)for four representative concentration pathways(RCPs)using an improved Lund-Potsdam-Jena *** a method was established based on the NPP to identify the climate change risk *** the midterm period(2041–2070)to the long-term period(2071–2099),the risks indicated by the negative anomaly and the downward trend of the NPP gradually extended and *** higher the scenario emissions,the more serious the *** particular,under the RCP8.5 scenario,during 2071–2099,the total risk area would be 81.85%,that of the high-risk area would reach 54.71%.In this high-risk area,the NPP anomaly would reach–96.00±46.95 gC·m-2·a-1,and the rate of change of the NPP would reach–3.56±3.40 gC·m-2·*** eastern plain of the AHTZ and the eastern grasslands of Inner Mongolia are expected to become the main risk concentration *** results indicated that the management of future climate change risks requires the consideration of the synergistic effects of warming and intensified drying on the ecosystem.

Heat Health Risk and Adaptability Assessments at the Subdistrict Scale in Metropolitan Beijing

Against the background of global climate change, the increasing heat health risk from the combined effect of changes in high temperature, exposure, vulnerability, and other factors has become a growing *** the low number of temperature observation stations is insufficient to represent the complex changes in urban heatwaves, and subdistrict-scale(town, township, neighborhood committee, and equivalent) heat health risk and adaptability assessments are still limited. In this study, we built daytime and nighttime high-temperature interpolation models supported by data from 225 meteorological stations in *** models performed well at interpolating the cumulative hours of high temperature and the interpolation quality at night was better than that during the day. We further established a methodological framework for heat health risk and adaptability assessments based on heat hazard, population exposure, social vulnerability, and adaptability at the subdistrict scale in Beijing. Our results show that the heat health risk hotspots were mainly located in the central urban area,with 81 hotspots during the day and 76 at night. The average value of the heat health risk index of urban areas was 5.60 times higher than that of suburban areas in the daytime,and 6.70 times higher than that of suburban areas in the night. Greater population density and higher intensity of heat hazards were the main reasons for the high risk in most heat health risk hotspots. Combined with a heat-adaptive-capacity evaluation for hotspot areas, this study suggests that 11high-risk and low-adaptation subdistricts are priority areas for government action to reduce heat health risk in policy formulation and urban development.

Anthropogenic adaptation measures expand suitable area for highland barley in Tibetan Plateau

Understanding the driving mechanisms of crop suitability is critical for ensuring global food security, particularly in promoting the sustainable development of alpine agriculture and alpine civilizations. In contrast to climate factors, how anthropogenic adaptation measures affect crop suitability remains largely unknown. This overlooked mechanism may explain why climate-driven model simulations underestimate the upper altitude limit for highland barley compared with observed records. Here, we used two decades of site-based phenological observations on the Tibetan Plateau and biophysical modeling, finding that anthropogenic adaptation measures can expand suitable cropping limits. These measures mainly involve breeding genotypes with lower thermal units, which enhance the adaptability of highland barley phenology to cold climates. Such adaptation mechanisms clarify the conflict between thermal niche model predictions and the observed distribution of highland barley up to an altitude of 5000 m. Considering these mechanisms, we developed an explainable framework to predict the potential habitat of highland barley under current climates. Results showed that anthropogenic adaptation measures expanded the suitable cropping area for highland barley by 27 × 104 km2 and the upper altitude limit for highland barley could reliably increase by approximately 50 m. This observation-based evidence underscores the crucial roles of anthropogenic adaptation measures in expanding suitable cropping limits of crops and highlights its importance for supporting food security and simulating accurate crop suitability. © 2025 Science China Press

Effects of climate and land use changes on runoff,sediment,nitrogen and phosphorus losses in the Haihe River Basin

Investigating the impacts of climate and land use changes on the hydrological cycle and water environment at the basin scale is important for providing scientific evidence to manage the trade-offs and synergies among water resources,agricultural production and environmental *** used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)with various spatiotemporal data to quantify the contributions of climate and land use changes to runoff,sediment,nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)losses in the Haihe River Basin since the *** results showed that 1)climate and land use changes significantly increased evapotranspiration(ET),transport loss,sediment input and output,and organic N and P production,with ET,sediment input and organic N affected the most;2)runoff,sediment and ammonia N were most affected by climate and land use changes in the Daqing River Basin(217.3 mm),Nanyun River Basin(3917.3 tons)and Chaobai River Basin(87.6 kg/ha),respectively;3)the impacts of climate and land use changes showed explicit spatiotemporal *** the Daqing,Yongding and Nanyun River Basins,the contribution of climate change to runoff and sediment kept increasing,reaching 88.6%-98.2%and 63%-77.2%,*** the Ziya and Chaobai River Basins,the contribution of land use was larger,reaching 88.6%-92.8%and 59.8%-92.7%,*** the Yongding,Chaobai,Ziya and Daqing River Basins,the contribution of land use to N and P losses showed an increasing trend over the past 40 years(maximum 89.7%).By contrast,in Nanyun and Luanhe River Basins,the contribution of climate change to N and P losses increased more(maximum 92.1%).Our evaluation of the impacts of climate and land use changes on runoff,sediment,and N and P losses will help to support the optimization of land and water resources in the Haihe River Basin.

Snow avalanches can repeatedly occur along the same track under diferent snowpack and meteorological conditions during the snow season in areas of snow avalanche *** snowfall,air temperature,and snow cover can change dramatically in a warming climate,causing signifcant changes in the snow avalanche *** how the risk of snow avalanche activity during the snow season will change under a warming climate remains an open *** on the observed meteorological and snowpack data from 1968 to 2021 and the snow avalanche activity data during the 2011–2021 snow seasons along a transportation corridor in the central Tianshan Mountains that has a typical continental snow climate,we analyzed the temporal distribution of the snow avalanche activity and the impacts of climate change on *** results indicate that the frequency of the snow avalanche activity is characterized by a Gaussian bimodal distribution,resulting from interactions between the snowfall,air temperature,and snowpack *** addition,the active period of wet snow avalanches triggered by temperature surges and high solar radiation has gradually moved forward from the second half to the frst half of March with climate *** frequency and size of snowfall-triggered snow avalanches showed only a slight and insignifcant *** fndings are important for rationally arranging snow avalanche relief resources to improve the risk management of snow avalanche disasters,and highlight the necessity to immediately design risk mitigation strategies and disaster risk policies to improve our adaptation to climate change.

Risk assessment of typhoon storm surge based on a simulated annealing algorithm and the least squares method: a case study in Guangdong Province, China

Under global warming, the risk level of storm surge disasters in coastal areas has substantially increased. Guangdong Province is among the provinces most affected by typhoon storm surges in China. The typhoon risk characteristics of this region play an important role in regional development and disaster prevention and mitigation. Based on the theory of disaster risk, this study constructs a risk assessment model based on the regional characteristics of Guangdong Province and an indicator system selected in previous work. It optimizes the model using a simulated annealing algorithm and the least squares method. The optimization model was used to assess the hazard, vulnerability, disaster resilience, and risk capability of cities in Guangdong Province from 2001 to 2014. The results indicate that the hazard is related to the typhoon landing area for a single typhoon storm surge disaster. The hazard in the typhoon landing areas is undoubtedly higher than in the regions far away from the typhoon, but their risk capability is not proportional to the risk level. For many years of average typhoon storm surge disasters, cities' hazard, vulnerability, and risk capability levels have increased from inland to coastal areas. The level of resilience is not related to the location but to the city's development indicators.
