Dense vegetation as a natural buffer: Mitigating and decelerating drought propagation

Effective management of soil drought requires a comprehensive understanding of drought propagation dynamics, particularly in the context of increasing vegetation. This study investigates the relationship between meteorological and soil droughts in the Red River Basin (RRB), Southwest China, using monthly Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and Soil Moisture Index (SMI) data from 2000 to 2021. A novel peak backtracking method was developed to quantify key propagation metrics: propagation time (PT), triggering threshold (TR), and propagation rate (PR). Granger causality analysis was applied to identify factors driving these dynamics. The key findings are as follows: (1) The average drought propagation rate in the RRB is 64.64 %, with a mean propagation time of 3.3 months and a triggering threshold of approximately -0.72. (2) Vegetation factors, particularly NDVI, are the dominant driver of changes in drought propagation characteristics, demonstrating stronger explanatory power than NPP. (3) Enhanced vegetation cover intensifies the decoupling between soil moisture and meteorological droughts, leading to slower propagation rates. High-vegetation areas experience a 13 % decrease in propagation rate and a 0.34-month increase in propagation time compared to low-vegetation areas. (4) The turning points in non-linear analysis results occurred at NDVI value of 0.419 and 0.514 respectively. Alleviation can only appear when the vegetation cover surpasses the turning point. These findings underscore the role of vegetation restoration in improving soil properties such as water retention and porosity, thereby mitigating drought propagation. They highlight the importance of afforestation and sustainable land management in reducing drought risks, particularly in ecologically sensitive regions like Southwest China.

The 5.5 cal ka BP climate event, population growth, circumscription and the emergence of the earliest complex societies in China

The emergence of complex society is a milestone in the history of human society evolution. China is one of the few regions in the world where the earliest complex society appeared; however, its driving mechanisms remain unresolved. On the base of available evidence from both archaeology and Holocene climate, in combination with agency theory, this study attempts to address the driving mechanisms for the simultaneous emergence of complex societies in multiple areas of China around 5.5 cal ka BP. It is hypothesized that three factors, including climate change, population growth, and circumscription, jointly act and cause regional population-resource imbalance and trigger inter-group conflicts and wars. Such competitions provide the opportunity for some power-pursuing agents to break the restriction of social leveling mechanism and to become the centralized decision-making leaders, which further lead to the emergence of incipient large-scale complex societies. Increase in extreme climate events during 6.0–5.0 cal ka BP cooling period causes frequent occurrence of resource stress and increase in the frequency of inter-group competitions, which creates conditions for the legitimation, institutionalization, and persistence of centralized leadership, and finally leads to the formation of persistent institutionalized inequity. Our research result can explain not only the process and mechanism of complex society formation, but also two phenomena which cannot be reasonably explained by previous theories, that are, why the earliest complex societies in China emerge around 5.5 cal ka BP, and why they appear simultaneously in multiple regions.

With the urgent need to implement the EU countries pledges and to monitor the effectiveness of Green Deal plan, Monitoring Reporting and Verification tools are needed to track how emissions are changing for all the sectors. Current official inventories only provide annual estimates of national CO2 emissions with a lag of 1+ year which do not capture the variations of emissions due to recent shocks including COVID lockdowns and economic rebounds, war in Ukraine. Here we present a near-real-time country-level dataset of daily fossil fuel and cement emissions from January 2019 through December 2021 for 27 EU countries and UK, which called Carbon Monitor Europe. The data are calculated separately for six sectors: power, industry, ground transportation, domestic aviation, international aviation and residential. Daily CO2 emissions are estimated from a large set of activity data compiled from different sources. The goal of this dataset is to improve the timeliness and temporal resolution of emissions for European countries, to inform the public and decision makers about current emissions changes in Europe. © 2022, CC BY.

Rural land use transition of mountainous areas and policy implications for land consolidation in China

The cultivation of mountainous land results in water loss and soil erosion. With rapid urbanization and industrialization in China, labor emigration relieves the cultivation of mountainous areas in regions with high poverty and leads to a significant land use transition. This research built an analysis framework for 'land use transition – driving mechanism – effects –responses' for mountainous areas of China undergoing land use transition and then proposed the direction of mountainous land consolidation. The results showed that the turning point of land use morphology was the core of rural land use transition in mountainous areas. The expansion of cropland and the contraction of forestland have transitioned to the abandonment of cropland and the expansion of forestland;this transition was the main characteristic of the dominant land use change. land marginalization and land ecological functional recovery were the main characteristics of the recessive land use transition in mountainous areas. Socioeconomic factors were the primary driving forces during land use transition in mountainous areas, with labor emigration being the most direct force. The rising costs of farming and the challenging living conditions causing labor emigration were fundamental driving forces. Rural land use transition in mountainous areas reduced the vulnerability of the ecological function of land ecosystems. The advantages and disadvantages of the socioeconomic effects should focus on rural development of mountainous areas as well as the livelihood of farmers;this should be further supported by empirical and quantitative research. Rural land use transition of mountainous areas improves natural restoration and is related to socioeconomic development. Rural land consolidation of mountainous areas should conform to land use transition,with the goal of shifting from the increase of cultivated land to the synergies of ecological and environmental protection.

We used the particle swarm optimization algorithm to make comparisons between five two-parameter runoff models, two empirical models, LCM and SCS;and three physical models, GA, GAML and GAF, in calculating rainfall-runoff yield. The comparison results show that the qualified rate and coefficient of determination of the LCM, SCS, and GAF models were higher than 83% and 0.89, respectively. GA and GAML models can simulate the mean value of data;however, they performed poorly in describing the relationship between rainfall and runoff yield. The qualified rate and coefficient of determination of the GA and GAML models were lower than 50% and 0.50, respectively. In conclusion, LCM and SCS models can be used to calculate the runoff yield of small ungauged watersheds. Small watersheds with gauged data can use GAF model, which has high accuracy and physically meaningful parameters, to calculate runoff yield.

The risk posed by natural disasters can be largely reflected by hazard and *** analysis of long-term hazard series can reveal the mechanisms by which risk *** disasters are one of the main types of disaster in the Tibet Region (TR) of *** this study,using statistical drought disasters data in the TR from 1912 to 2012 and socio-economic statistics for five periods between 1965 and 2015,and adopting standard statistical analyses,a wavelet analysis,and a risk assessment model,we first construct the index system for drought disaster risk assessment,and then assess the risk of drought disasters and analyze the mechanisms of changes in *** results showed that the occurrence of drought in the TR had three distinct cycles during this study periods,with durations of 5,15,and 27 years *** frequency of drought in the TR showed increasing trends,and the cycle of drought had been *** 1965 to 2015,the risk of drought disaster in the TR is significantly increased with the growth rate of 6.8% in high-risk *** addition,the severity of drought had enhanced,especially in *** increased vulnerability locally and significantly enhanced hazard of drought disaster,with a shrinkage of 16.3% in the low-value area and an expansion of 7.4% in the high-value area,being the determinants of drought disaster ***,agricultural areas of the TR are the focal locations where risk of drought disaster needs to be managed.

A gradient analysis on urban sprawl and urban landscape pattern between 1985 and 2000 in the Pearl River Delta, China

Urbanization is an irreversible trend worldwide, especially in rapidly developing China. Accelerated urbanization has resulted in rapid urban sprawl and urban landscape pattern changes. Quantifying the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban land use and landscape pattern not only can reveal the characteristics of social transfer and economic development, but also can provide insights into the driving mechanisms of land use changes. In this study, we integrated remote sensing (RS), geographic information system (GIS), landscape metrics, and gradient analysis to quantitatively compare the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use, urban sprawl, and landscape pattern for nine cities in the Pearl River Delta from 1985aEuro'2000. For the whole study region, urbanization was obvious. The results show an increase in urban buildup land and shrinkage of cropland in the Pearl River Delta. However, the nine cities differed greatly in terms of the process and magnitude of urban sprawl for both the spatial and temporal dimensions. This was most evident for the cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Gradient analysis on urban landscape changes could deepen understanding of the stages of urban development and provide a scientific foundation for future urban planning and land management strategies in China.

Resolving regional carbon budgets is critical for informing land-based mitigation policy. For nine regions covering nearly the whole globe, we collected inventory estimates of carbon-stock changes complemented by satellite estimates of biomass changes where inventory data are missing. The net land–atmospheric carbon exchange(NEE) was calculated by taking the sum of the carbon-stock change and lateral carbon fluxes from crop and wood trade, and riverine-carbon export to the ocean. Summing up NEE from all regions, we obtained a global ‘bottom-up’ NEE for net land anthropogenic CO2uptake of –2.2 ± 0.6 Pg C yr-1consistent with the independent top-down NEE from the global atmospheric carbon budget during 2000–2009. This estimate is so far the most comprehensive global bottom-up carbon budget accounting, which set up an important milestone for global carbon-cycle studies. By decomposing NEE into component fluxes, we found that global soil heterotrophic respiration amounts to a source of CO2of 39 Pg C yr-1with an interquartile of 33–46 Pg C yr-1—a much smaller portion of net primary productivity than previously reported.

Study region: The Tibetan Plateau in China, the Third Pole of the *** focus: Accurate descriptions of spatial variation in evapotranspiration (ET) and its components on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are crucial for understanding the dynamics of the regional water cycle and energy balance. However, how various environmental factors affect ET and its components remains unclear. This study addresses this gap using observational data from 14 sites and employing the Shuttleworth-Wallace-Hu (SWH) model to examine the spatial relationships between ET, its components, and underlying *** hydrological insights for the region: The SWH model parameters were optimized using the Monte Carlo method, achieving a satisfactory model performance with an average R² of 0.75. The ratio of transpiration to ET was generally higher in alpine meadows (0.55) than alpine steppes (0.39). Across the TP, precipitation and the leaf area index together shaped spatial variation in ET and transpiration. Precipitation emerged as the primary driver of interannual variation in ET, while the leaf area index strongly regulated the proportion of ET accounted for by transpiration. Furthermore, above aridity index values of 0.73, grassland ecosystems transitioned from water to energy. This finding is significant as it challenges the common application of an aridity index value of 0.65 to distinguish arid from humid regions. It suggests that TP grasslands, with an AI of 0.65-0.73, remain primarily water-limited. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Natural variation has caused disaster on human society since the human beings appeared on the earth [1,2].Especially,more significant changes in environmental elements have been occurred under global change [3,4],which further increases the stress on social economic [5].The World Economic Forum reported that the annual global death count from natural disasters is about 60,000, or 0.1% of global death.
