Evolutionary dynamics on stochastic evolving networks for multiple-strategy games

Evolutionary game theory on dynamical networks has received much attention. Most of the work has been focused on 2×2 games such as prisoner's dilemma and snowdrift, with general n×n games seldom addressed. In particular, analytical methods are still lacking. Here we generalize the stochastic linking dynamics proposed by Wu, Zhou, Fu, Luo, Wang, and Traulsen [PLoS ONE 5, e11187 (2010)] to n×n games. We analytically obtain that the fast linking dynamics results in the replicator dynamics with a rescaled payoff matrix. In the rescaled matrix, intuitively, each entry is the product of the original entry and the average duration time of the corresponding link. This result is shown to be robust to a wide class of imitation processes. As applications, we show both analytically and numerically that the biodiversity, modeled as the stability of a zero-sum rock-paper-scissors game, cannot be altered by the fast linking dynamics. In addition, we show that the fast linking dynamics can stabilize tit-for-tat as an evolutionary stable strategy in the repeated prisoner's dilemma game provided the interaction between the identical strategies happens sufficiently often. Our method paves the way for an analytical study of the multiple-strategy coevolutionary dynamics.

As the number of vehicles in the monitoring system increases, the size of the table for storing their past data becomes very large, which brings performance troubles occurred in the systems with VLDB. To improve the data-access efficiency and keep the database stability, the original table is proposed to be partitioned. According to the functional requirements for database from the vehicle monitoring system, the range partition is suggested, with twelve partitions for one year's historical data and each partition corresponding to a separate month. Then the partitioned table is created after finishing the definitions of the partitioning function and the partitioning schema, where the former gives a rule for partitioning and the latter specifies the storage places of partitions to different file groups. Because the data in the partitioned table is separated into several file groups, the data-access is capable of parallel processing and keeps a higher efficiency. Tests show that the partitioned table works in improving the database performance and the query time is greatly reduced compared to that cost in the original table. © 2011 IEEE.

Cosmic exergy based ecological assessment for a wetland in Beijing

Wetlands research and restoration has become one of the critical concern due to their importance in providing ecosystem services. This study proposes a holistic methodology to assess the wetland ecosystem based on cosmic exergy as a thermodynamic orientor. This new approach is applied to two typical wastewater treatment facilities (an activated sludge system and a cyclic activated sludge system) and to a constructed wetland ecosystem in Beijing for comparison. Results show that the Beijing wetland ecosystem gains positive net present ecological value of 3.08E+14 J c regarding its total life cycle. Comparison with the activated sludge system and cyclic activated sludge system, shows that the wetland ecosystem has greater dependencies on local resources (22% vs. 0% vs. 0%) and renewable resources (67% vs. 38% vs. 31%) as well as a larger ecological sustainability index (0.64157 vs. 0.00005 vs. 0.00008). This implies that the wetland ecosystem is more environmentally friendly and sustainable method for water treatment .

Knowledge manufacturing system has the ability of modifying dynamically manufacturing mode rapidly when production environment factors change. It is essential to evaluate the matching degree of established manufacturing mode and changed production environment factors. In this paper, a matching decision model for self-adaptability of knowledge manufacturing system based on the fuzzy neural network is proposed. The changed production environment factors are regarded as linguistic variable inputs. A modified momentum factor B-P algorithm consisting of information feed-forward process and the error back-propagation process is used. The proposed FNN model is employed to evaluate the matching degree of a car-lamp production manufacturing mode to variable environment units. Matching result indicates adaptive degree of manufacturing system. Experiment result demonstrates the method is effective.

Payoff-based accumulative effect promotes cooperation in spatial prisoner’s dilemma

We study the effect of accumulative payoff on the evolution of cooperation in the evolutionary prisoner＇s dilemma on a square lattice. We introduce a decaying factor for the accumulative payoff, which characterizes the extent that the historical payoff is accumulated. It is shown that for fixed values of the temptation to defect, the density of cooperators increases with the value of the decaying factor. This indicates that the more the historical payoff is involved, the more favourable cooperators become. In the critical region where the cooperator density converges to zero, cooperators vanish according to a power-law-like behaviour. The associated exponents agree approximately with the two-dimensional directed percolation and depend weakly on the value of the decaying factor.

Wireless sensor networks are characterized by multihop network. Some nodes in network are required to forward a disproportionately high amount of traffic and die early, leaving the unmonitored areas in network and leading to the problem of energy hole. This paper investigates a variety of strategies to avoid the energy hole, such as communication power control, data aggregation, nonuniform energy distribution, mobile node auxiliary and clustering. The analysis and comparison of different strategies are given and the advantages and disadvantage of them are discussed in this paper.

This paper investigates the asymptotical stability for discrete-time Cohen-Grossberg neural networks with both timevarying and distributed delays. By constructing a novel Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and introducing some free-weighting matrices, one delay-dependent sufficient condition is obtained by using convex combination. The criterion is presented in terms of LMIs and the feasibility can be easily checked with the help of LMI in Matlab Toolbox. In addition, the activation function can be described more generally, which generalizes those earlier methods. Finally, the effectiveness of obtained results can be further illustrated by one numerical example in comparison with the existent ones.

Energy cost and greenhouse gas emissions of a Chinese wind farm

Wind power is considered as one of the most promising renewable energy sources in China. Presented in this study is a life cycle analysis of energy performance and greenhouse gas emission for a typical wind farm in Guangxi, with different stages of manufacturing, transportation, and installation of mechanical components, operation and maintenance, and disassemble and disposal taken into account. Results show that the nonrenewable energy cost and greenhouse gas emission to generate 1 MJ of electricity for the grid are 0.046 MJ and 0.002 kg CO2 equivalent, respectively. In consideration of the dominant power generation technology of coal combustion in China, the nonrenewable energy saving brought about by the concerned wind farm is estimated at 1.22E+7GJ during its twenty year operating period, while the reduced greenhouse gas emissions are as much as 1.03E+06 ton CO2 equivalent. It is believed that this successful example can lend solid support to a future wide use of wind power in China.

Due to FPGA's flexibility and parallelism, it is popular for accelerating image processing. In this paper, a double-parallel architecture based on FPGA has been exploited to speed up median filter and edge detection tasks, which are essential steps during image processing. The double-parallel scheme includes an image-level parallel and an operation-level parallel. The image-level parallel is a high-level parallel which divides one image into different parts and processes them concurrently. The operation-level parallel, which is embedded in each image-level parallel thread, fully explores every parallel part inside the concrete algorithms. The corresponding design is based on a DE2 Development Board which contains a CYCLONE II FPGA device. Meanwhile, the same task has also been implemented on PC and DSP for performance comparison. Despite the fact that operating frequencies of used PC and DSP are much higher than FPGA's, FPGA costs less time per computed image than both of them. By taking advantage of the double-parallel technique, the speed/frequency ratio of FPGA is 202 times faster than PC and 147 times faster than DSP. Finally, a detailed discussion about different platforms is conducted, which analyzes advantages and disadvantages of used computing platforms. This paper reveals that the proposed double-parallel scheme can dramatically speed up image processing methods even on a low-cost FPGA platform with low frequency and limited resources, which is very meaningful for practical applications.

Video-based traffic flow monitoring is a fast emerging field based on the continuous development of computer vision. A survey of the state-of-the-art video processing techniques in traffic flow monitoring is presented in this paper. Firstly, vehicle detection is the first step of video processing and detection methods are classified into background modeling based methods and non-background modeling based methods. In particular, nighttime detection is more challenging due to bad illumination and sensitivity to light. Then tracking techniques, including 3D model-based, region-based, active contour-based and feature-based tracking, are presented. A variety of algorithms including MeanShift algorithm, Kalman Filter and Particle Filter are applied in tracking process. In addition, shadow detection and vehicles occlusion bring much trouble into vehicle detection, tracking and so on. Based on the aforementioned video processing techniques, discussion on behavior understanding including traffic incident detection is carried out. Finally, key challenges in traffic flow monitoring are discussed.
