A thermal controlled optical attenuator based on symmetric dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide is theoretically proposed in this work. The mode effective indices, propagation lengths, and the temperature dependent characteristic are analyzed using finite-element method. The bound mode characteristics and the thermo-optical properties of the symmetric dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide are investigated. Besides, the process tolerance and the loss characteristics of the waveguides are analyzed. Finally, the optimized configuration of the attenuator is discussed. The results show that the proposed optical attenuator is easily fabricated and can be tuned efficiently with a low heating power. Such device can be used in the sub-wavelength magnitude integrated optical circuits.
