The earth observation satellite scheduling has always been critical for the maximum use of limited satellite resources, which basically includes scheduling ground target observation and observation data downloading. Due to the complexity of the mathematical model and its NP-hardness, current research usually splits it into two problems to simplify the model. In this paper, we propose a model of the integrated scheduling problem of satellite observation and data downloading (ISP-SODD) based on the decentralized partially observable Markov decision process (Dec-POMDP), treating each satellite as an agent with autonomous decision-making capability. A multi-agent deep reinforcement learning-based (MADRL-based) algorithm is proposed to solve it. A series of simulation experiments of different scales validate the effectiveness of the method and its advantages compared with the traditional heuristic algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to apply multi-agent reinforcement learning to a multi-satellite scheduling scenario with downloading considerations. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate the distributed optimization problem for heterogeneous linear multi-agent systems with unknown disturbances. By applying the primal-dual method and the time-scale separation technique, a distributed dynamic controller without using any disturbance information is proposed. Based on the optimal condition, the relationship between the optimal solution and the equilibrium point of the system is established, and it is shown that the distributed optimization problem is solved provided that the closed-loop system is stable. Then, inspired by the nonsingular perturbation analysis, it is proved that the closed-loop system is exponentially input-to-state stable with respect to the derivative of the disturbance. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the theoretical results. © 2024 IEEE.

HyRSM++: Hybrid relation guided temporal set matching for few-shot action recognition

Few-shot action recognition is a challenging but practical problem aiming to learn a model that can be easily adapted to identify new action categories with only a few labeled samples. However, existing attempts still suffer from two drawbacks: (i) learning individual features without considering the entire task may result in limited representation capability, and (ii) existing alignment strategies are sensitive to noises and misaligned instances. To handle the two limitations, we propose a novel Hybrid Relation guided temporal Set Matching (HyRSM++) approach for few-shot action recognition. The core idea of HyRSM++ is to integrate all videos within the task to learn discriminative representations and involve a robust matching technique. To be specific, HyRSM++ consists of two key components, a hybrid relation module and a temporal set matching metric. Given the basic representations from the feature extractor, the hybrid relation module is introduced to fully exploit associated relations within and cross videos in an episodic task and thus can learn task-specific embeddings. Subsequently, in the temporal set matching metric, we carry out the distance measure between query and support videos from a set matching perspective and design a bidirectional Mean Hausdorff Metric to improve the resilience to misaligned instances. Furthermore, we extend the proposed HyRSM++ to deal with the more challenging semi-supervised few-shot action recognition and unsupervised few-shot action recognition tasks. Experimental results on multiple benchmarks demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance under various few-shot settings. Pneumoconiosis, as the most prevalent and severe occupational disease in China, is categorized into four stages based on the area of small shadows in lungs. Previous diagnostic methods have limited accuracy for identifying different stages due to complex and diverse lesions of pneumoconiosis, as well as the difficulty of collecting rich X-ray images of patients. To address the issues, a novel diagnostic method based on adaptive feature fusion and multi-class loss function is proposed. First, the prototype network is introduced to establish a diagnostic model under the insufficient images, with the purpose of distinguishing the disease stage by the distance between the features of various samples. Following that, the multi-channel and multi-level feature fusion modules are proposed, respectively. These modules incorporate a gate-based adaptive selection mechanism to efficiently integrate the most important features from different channels and levels. Finally, the multi-class loss function is designed to train the diagnostic model of pneumoconiosis. The experimental results on a self-built dataset of chest X-ray radiographs demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms ten comparative methods in terms of comprehensive performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Multitask learning (MTL) is a promising field in machine learning owing to its capability to improve the generalization performance of all tasks by sharing knowledge among the related tasks. MTL has attracted a large amount of attention in the multitask-related community. In recent years, with the rapid development of distributed machine learning, MTL in a distributed environment becomes a hot research topic. Although MTL can reap great fruit in a distributed environment, the sensitive information, such as photos and voice recordings of the owner, in distributed data may be leaked during training. Consequently, in the distributed settings, one prominent challenge of MTL is to prevent the disclosure of sensitive private data. In this article, we propose a novel approach, federated multitask learning (FMTL), which applies federated learning to MTL in a distributed environment in order to protect the MTL model from being leaked and to better optimize the utility of the MTL model. In FMTL, all the participants independently train their local models on their own dataset in parallel and only transmit their model updates to the central server for aggregation at every epoch. As a result, their learning accuracy is enhanced beyond what is achieved only on their own training data. In this manner, it can achieve the best tradeoff between the utility and privacy: participants not only preserve the privacy of their own data, but also benefit from the models of other participants. The experimental results on annotated facial landmarks in the wild (AFLW) and annotated faces in the wild (AFW) benchmark datasets verify the effectiveness of our framework. © 2020 IEEE.

Predicting the future trajectory of a target becomes particularly challenging while dealing with occlusion conditions, where current information is unavailable, and historical data becomes the only basis for prediction. In this paper, we propose a trajectory prediction model that utilizes scaled dot product attention mechanism, a convolution neural network, and a bidirectional long short term memory network. The scaled dot product attention mechanism gauges the impact of historical sequences, while the convolution neural network extracts intricate feature information from these sequences. Subsequently, these data is fed into the bidirectional long short term memory network to forecast the target's navigation path. Experimental results highlight that the Attentive CNN-BiLSTM (ACBL) network which we proposed has lower root mean square error (RMSE) by 23 % on average than current methods. © 2024 Technical Committee on control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Industrial surveillance videos capture subsequent video frames and deliver them to processing servers for video analytics. In such a case, image compression is a promising technology in industrial scene understanding due to its reduced transmission burden. Existing works focus on establishing macroscopic visual feature maps that contain compact image information. In this article, a cross-modality guided multi-scale feature representation based image compression method is proposed for understanding industrial scenes. Firstly, an image compressing framework with multi-grained representation (MGRIC) is proposed for industrial scene understanding, which builds image patch, structure, semantic, and signal levels feature maps. Secondly, an encoder-decoder architecture is designed for image compression with diverse granularities. Thirdly, an interaction policy between different levels is developed to ensure the subsequent level’s decoding. Experiments on the CUB-200-2011 dataset demonstrate that the proposed MGRIC method achieves competitive performance, which verifies its effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.
