Motor imagery (MI) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) enable the direct control of external devices through the imagined movements of various body parts. Unlike previous systems that used fixed-length EEG trials for MI decoding, asynchronous BCIs aim to detect the user's MI without explicit triggers. They are challenging to implement, because the algorithm needs to first distinguish between resting-states and MI trials, and then classify the MI trials into the correct task, all without any triggers. This paper proposes a sliding window prescreening and classification (SWPC) approach for MI-based asynchronous BCIs, which consists of two modules: a prescreening module to screen MI trials out of the resting-state, and a classification module for MI classification. Both modules are trained with supervised learning followed by self-supervised learning, which refines the feature extractors. Within-subject and cross-subject asynchronous MI classifications on four different EEG datasets validated the effectiveness of SWPC, i.e., it always achieved the highest average classification accuracy, and outperformed the best state-of-the-art baseline on each dataset by about 2%. © 2024, CC BY.

Effect of different addition of L-Lysine (L-Lys) on the stability and gel properties of PSE (pale, soft, and exudative)-like chicken meat protein isolate (PPI)-sunflower oil emulsion were studied by comparing pure PPI groups, only added L-Lys groups (Lys) and sunflower oil groups (SO). Compared with PPI group, the particle size of Lys, SO and added L-Lys to the sunflower oil-PPI groups were reduced and the distribution were uniform, the absolute value of zeta potential and the stability of emulsion were increased, and the gel with higher elastic (G′), better stability and more compact micro-structure was formed. Especially when 0.2% L-Lys was added to the emulsion system, the particle size of emulsion was reduced by 76.16%, the emulsion gel strength was increased by 286.84%, the centrifugal loss was reduced by 51.98% (P © 2024, The Authors. When a large number of distributed power and renewable energy are connected to the smart grid, the volatility and intermittency of renewable energy bring some challenges to the smart grid. Therefore, accurate medium-term load forecasting is essential because it is conducive to the stability of the power grid and can provide data support for the power generating plan. Many factors affect medium-term load forecasting and the real-time electricity price is a very important factor among them. In this paper, a multi-scale model based on LSTM model is proposed to extracts features from 3 different time scales including half-hourly time scale, daily time scale and monthly time scale. At first, the half-hourly data is processed by a half-hourly data processing layer to extract the half-hourly features. Then, its output is concatenated with the daily load data and is input into a daily data processing layer. Finally, the daily features are concatenated with the monthly load data and they are input into a monthly data processing layer to extract the monthly features and get the final forecasting results. The case study results demonstrate that the proposed multi-scale model has better performance than the single-scale models.

Device-to-Device (D2D) communications under-laying Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with its mobility extend the coverage and improve system capacity and flexible networking capabilities. However, the energy-efficiency are major challenge in UAV-assisted D2D networks. In this paper, the joint power and channel optimization problem has been investigated to maximize the system energy efficiency. Using the properties of objective function, the original optimization problem is transformed into two sub-problems. In the first step, the optimal power allocation problem is solved by using the Nash balance point of non-cooperative Game theory. In the second step, the channel allocation problem is constructed into a Bipartite graph, and then the Hungarian algorithm is used to find the best matching. The numerical simulation results show that the proposed scheme not only improves the energy efficiency of the system but also enhances the spectral efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Csp-Net: Common Spatial Pattern Empowered Neural Networks for Eeg-Based Motor imagery Classification

Electroencephalogram-based motor imagery (MI) classification is an important paradigm of non-invasive brain-computer interfaces. Common spatial pattern (CSP), which exploits different energy distributions on the scalp while performing different MI tasks, is very popular in MI classification. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have also achieved great success, due to their powerful learning capabilities. This paper proposes two CSP-empowered neural networks (CSP-Nets), which integrate knowledge-driven CSP filters with data-driven CNNs to enhance the performance in MI classification. CSP-Net-1 directly adds a CSP layer before a CNN to improve the input discriminability. CSP-Net-2 replaces a convolutional layer in CNN with a CSP layer. The CSP layer parameters in both CSP-Nets are initialized with CSP filters designed from the training data. During training, they can either be kept fixed or optimized using gradient descent. Experiments on four public MI datasets demonstrated that the two CSP-Nets consistently improved over their CNN backbones, in both within-subject and cross-subject classifications. They are particularly useful when the number of training samples is very small. Our work demonstrates the advantage of integrating knowledge-driven traditional machine learning with data-driven deep learning in EEG-based brain-computer interfaces. © 2024, The Authors. Existing coupled distributed estimation and motion control strategies of mobile sensor networks present limitations in velocity-varying target tracking. Therefore, a velocity-varying target tracking algorithm based on flocking control is proposed herein. The Kalman-consensus filter is utilized to estimate the position, velocity and acceleration of a target. The flocking control algorithm with a velocity-varying virtual leader enables the position of the center of the mobile sensor network to converge to that of the target. By applying an effective cascading Lyapunov method, stability analysis is performed. Simulation results are provided to validate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

Complementary Learning Subnetworks for Parameter-Efficient Class-Incremental Learning

In the scenario of class-incremental learning (CIL), deep neural networks have to adapt their model parameters to non-stationary data distributions, e.g., the emergence of new classes over time. However, CIL models are challenged by the well-known catastrophic forgetting phenomenon. Typical methods such as rehearsal-based ones rely on storing exemplars of old classes to mitigate catastrophic forgetting, which limits real-world applications considering memory resources and privacy issues. In this paper, we propose a novel rehearsal-free CIL approach that learns continually via the synergy between two Complementary Learning Subnetworks. Our approach involves jointly optimizing a plastic CNN feature extractor and an analytical feed-forward classifier. The inaccessibility of historical data is tackled by holistically controlling the parameters of a well-trained model, ensuring that the decision boundary learned fits new classes while retaining recognition of previously learned classes. Specifically, the trainable CNN feature extractor provides task-dependent knowledge separately without interference;and the final classifier integrates task-specific knowledge incrementally for decision-making without forgetting. In each CIL session, it accommodates new tasks by attaching a tiny set of declarative parameters to its backbone, in which only one matrix per task or one vector per class is kept for knowledge retention. Extensive experiments on a variety of task sequences show that our method achieves competitive results against state-of-the-art methods, especially in accuracy gain, memory cost, training efficiency, and task-order robustness. Furthermore, to make the non-growing backbone (i.e., a model with limited network capacity) suffice to train on more incoming tasks, a graceful forgetting implementation on previously learned trivial tasks is empirically investigated. Road obstacle detection is an important problem for vehicle driving safety. In this paper, we aim to obtain robust road obstacle detection based on spatio-temporal context modeling. Firstly, a data-driven spatial context model of the driving scene is constructed with the layouts of the training data. Then, obstacles in the input image are detected via the state-of-the-art object detection algorithms, and the results are combined with the generated scene layout. In addition, to further improve the performance and robustness, temporal information in the image sequence is taken into consideration, and the optical flow is obtained in the vicinity of the detected objects to track the obstacles across neighboring frames. Qualitative and quantitative experiments were conducted on the Small Obstacle Detection (SOD) dataset and the Lost and Found dataset. The results indicate that our method with spatio-temporal context modeling is superior to existing methods for road obstacle detection. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A2J-Transformer: Anchor-to-Joint Transformer Network for 3D Interacting Hand Pose Estimation from a Single RGB image

3D interacting hand pose estimation from a single RGB image is a challenging task, due to serious self-occlusion and inter-occlusion towards hands, confusing similar appearance patterns between 2 hands, ill-posed joint position mapping from 2D to 3D, etc.. To address these, we propose to extend A2J-the state-of-the-art depth-based 3D single hand pose estimation method-to RGB domain under interacting hand condition. Our key idea is to equip A2J with strong local-global aware ability to well capture interacting hands’ local fine details and global articulated clues among joints jointly. To this end, A2J is evolved under Transformer’s non-local encoding-decoding framework to build A2J-Transformer. It holds 3 main advantages over A2J. First, self-attention across local anchor points is built to make them global spatial context aware to better capture joints’ articulation clues for resisting occlusion. Secondly, each anchor point is regarded as learnable query with adaptive feature learning for facilitating pattern fitting capacity, instead of having the same local representation with the others. Last but not least, anchor point locates in 3D space instead of 2D as in A2J, to leverage 3D pose prediction. Experiments on challenging InterHand 2.6M demonstrate that, A2J-Transformer can achieve state-of-the-art model-free performance (3.38mm MPJPE advancement in 2-hand case) and can also be applied to depth domain with strong generalization.
