The first search for scalar leptoquarks produced in τ-lepton–quark collisions is presented. It is based on a set of proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The reconstructed final state consists of a jet, significant missing transverse momentum, and a τ lepton reconstructed through its hadronic or leptonic decays. Limits are set on the product of the leptoquark production cross section and branching fraction and interpreted as exclusions in the plane of the leptoquark mass and the leptoquark-τ-quark coupling strength.

A search for the production of a top quark in association with a photon and additional jets via flavor changing neutral current interactions is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The search is performed by looking for processes where a single top quark is produced in association with a photon, or a pair of top quarks where one of the top quarks decays into a photon and an up or charm quark. Events with an electron or a muon, a photon, one or more jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate signal and standard model background processes. No significant deviation is observed over the predicted background. Observed (expected) upper limits are set on the branching fractions of top quark decays: B(t→uγ)<0.95×10−5 (1.20×10−5) and B(t→cγ)<1.51×10−5 (1.54×10−5) at 95% confidence level, assuming a single nonzero coupling at a time. The obtained limit for B(t→uγ) is similar to the current best limit, while the limit for B(t→cγ) is significantly tighter than previous results.

A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying in the CMS muon system is presented. A data sample is used corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. Decay products of long-lived HNLs could interact with the shielding materials in the CMS muon system and create hadronic and electromagnetic showers detected in the muon chambers. This distinctive signature provides a unique handle to search for HNLs with masses below 4 GeV and proper decay lengths of the order of meters. The signature is sensitive to HNL couplings to all three generations of leptons. Candidate events are required to contain a prompt electron or muon originating from a vertex on the beam axis and a displaced shower in the muon chambers. No significant deviations from the standard model background expectation are observed. In the electron (muon) channel, the most stringent limits to date are set for HNLs in the mass range of 2.1–3.0 (1.9–3.3) GeV, reaching mixing matrix element squared values as low as 8.6(4.6)×10−6.

The observation of WWγ production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 is presented. The observed (expected) significance is 5.6 (5.1) standard deviations. Events are selected by requiring exactly two leptons (one electron and one muon) of opposite charge, moderate missing transverse momentum, and a photon. The measured fiducial cross section for WWγ is 5.9±0.8(stat)±0.8(syst)±0.7(modeling) fb, in agreement with the next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics prediction. The analysis is extended with a search for the associated production of the Higgs boson and a photon, which is generated by a coupling of the Higgs boson to light quarks. The result is used to constrain the Higgs boson couplings to light quarks.

The first observation of the decay Ξb−→ψ(2S)Ξ− and measurement of the branching ratio of Ξb−→ψ(2S)Ξ− to Ξb−→J/ψΞ− are presented. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment at s=13 TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The branching fraction ratio is measured to be B(Ξb−→ψ(2S)Ξ−)/B(Ξb−→J/ψΞ−)=0.84−0.19+0.21(stat)±0.10(syst)±0.02(B), where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of the Ξb(5945)0 baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using the Ξb−π+ final state, where the Ξb− baryon is reconstructed through the decays J/ψΞ−, ψ(2S)Ξ−, J/ψΛK−, and J/ψΣ0K−. Finally, the fraction of Ξb− baryons produced from Ξb(5945)0 decays is determined.

The results of a search for stealth supersymmetry in final states with two photons and jets, targeting a phase space region with low missing transverse momentum (pTmiss), are reported. The study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. As LHC results continue to constrain the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the low pTmiss regime is increasingly valuable to explore. To estimate the backgrounds due to standard model processes in such events, we apply corrections derived from simulation to an estimate based on a control selection in data. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified stealth supersymmetry models with gluino and squark pair production. The observed data are consistent with the standard model predictions, and gluino (squark) masses of up to 2150 (1850) GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level.

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) decaying in the CMS muon detectors is presented. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1, recorded at the LHC in 2016–2018, is used. The decays of LLPs are reconstructed as high multiplicity clusters of hits in the muon detectors. In the context of twin Higgs models, the search is sensitive to LLP masses from 0.4 to 55 GeV and a broad range of LLP decay modes, including decays to hadrons, τ leptons, electrons, or photons. No excess of events above the standard model background is observed. The most stringent limits to date from LHC data are set on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay to a pair of LLPs with masses below 10 GeV. This search also provides the best limits for various intervals of LLP proper decay length and mass. Finally, this search sets the first limits at the LHC on a dark quantum chromodynamic sector whose particles couple to the Higgs boson through gluon, Higgs boson, photon, vector, and dark-photon portals, and is sensitive to branching fractions of the Higgs boson to dark quarks as low as 2×10−3.

A search for electroweak production of a single vectorlike T quark in association with a bottom (b) quark in the all-hadronic decay channel is presented. This search uses proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The T quark is assumed to have charge 2/3 and decay to a top (t) quark and a Higgs (H) or Z boson. Hadronic decays of the t quark and the H or Z boson are reconstructed from the kinematic properties of jets, including those containing b hadrons. No deviation from the standard model prediction is observed in the reconstructed tH and tZ invariant mass distributions. The 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction of a T quark produced in association with a b quark and decaying via tH or tZ range from 1260 to 68 fb for T quark masses of 600–1200 GeV.

The first observation of the concurrent production of two J/ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead (pPb) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb−1. The two J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ+μ− decay channels with transverse momenta pT>6.5 GeV and rapidity |y|<2.4. Events where one of the J/ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The pPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ(pPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X)=22.0±8.9(stat)±1.5(syst) nb. A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J/ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σSPSpPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X=16.5±10.8(stat)±0.1(syst) nb and σDPSpPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X=5.4±6.2(stat)±0.4(syst) nb, respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σeff>1.0 mb at 95% confidence level.

详细信息
A search for the production of long-lived particles in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC is presented. The search is based on data collected by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. This search is designed to be sensitive to long-lived particles with mean proper decay lengths between 0.1 and 1000 mm, whose decay products produce a final state with at least one displaced vertex and missing transverse momentum. A machine learning algorithm, which improves the background rejection power by more than an order of magnitude, is applied to improve the sensitivity. The observation is consistent with the standard model background prediction, and the results are used to constrain split supersymmetry (SUSY) and gauge-mediated SUSY breaking models with different gluino mean proper decay lengths and masses. This search is the first CMS search that shows sensitivity to hadronically decaying long-lived particles from signals with mass differences between the gluino and neutralino below 100 GeV. It sets the most stringent limits to date for split-SUSY models and gauge-mediated SUSY breaking models with gluino proper decay length less than 6 mm.
