This paper deals with switching controller design that includes several linear time-invariant (LTI) controllers-all of them capable of stabilizing a specific LTI plant-in such a way that the H∞control performance of the closed-loop system is guaranteed for any switching sequence. It is shown that it is possible to find realizations for these controller transfer matrices so that the closed-loop system remains H∞control performance under arbitrary switching. © 2015 Technical Committee on control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Multi-parameter simultaneously sensing based on an optimized concatenated FBG with LPG

We analyze an optical fiber sensor based on a concatenated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with long period grating (LPG) with transfer matrix method and experiment. First, we optimize parameters of concatenated structure in the method of simulation and discuss the influence that the lengths, periods and dc induced index changes of FBG and LPG and length of optical fiber between LPG and FBG has to influence reflection spectrum. Second, based on the optimized parameters for concatenated structure, fabricate such structure and use it to monitor concentration and temperature simultaneously. Simulation result proves that increasing the lengths of FBG and LPG properly, and length of optical fiber between LPG and FBG fixed in 20 mm, more clearly reflection spectrum can be obtained. Experiment result shows a novel optical fiber sensor based on a concatenated strong fiber Bragg grating with a weak long period grating (CLBG) device can be used to monitor concentration and temperature simultaneously. The result of research has reference value in multi-parameter simultaneously sensing. © 2015 by De Gruyter.

To improve the accuracy and interactivity of soft tissue delormatlon simulation, a new plate spring model based on physics is proposed. The model is parameterized and thus can be adapted to simulate different organs. Different soft tissues are modeled by changing the width, number of pieces, thickness, and length of a single plate spring. In this paper, the structural design, calcula- tion of soft tissue deformation and real-time feedback operations of our system are also introduced. To evaluate the feasibility of the system and validate the model, an experimental system of haptic in- teraction, in which users can use virtual hands to pull virtual brain tissues, is built using PHANTOM OMNI devices. Experimental results show that the proposed system is stable, accurate and promising for modeling instantaneous soft tissue deformation.

This paper proposes an adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) approach that allows Industrial Wireless Sensor networks (IWSNs) to cognitively switch working channels for high transmission reliability. Assuming the communication spectrum state follows a Markov Process (MP), we build a theoretical AFH framework based on the theory of Markov Decision Process (MDP). With this decision-theoretic framework, we can achieve an AFH strategy that maximizes the expected cumulative transmission reliability over a finite horizon. Judging the high computational complexity of the proposed MDP model, we further propose a myopic AFH with reduced complexity by assuming that each channel evolves independently. Without additional computation burdens or control messages exchange between sensors, the proposed AFH strategies are centrally computed by the network manager. Simulations finally demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed AFH strategies.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. The data replica management scheme is a critical component of cloud storage system. In order to enhance its scalability and reliability at the same time improve system response time, the multiple data replica scheme is adopted. When a cloud user issues an access request, a suitable replica should be selected to respond to it in order to shorten user access time and promote system load balance. In this paper, with network status, storage node load and historical information of replica selection considered comprehensively, a PGSA (Plant Growth Simulation Algorithm) based data replica selection scheme for cloud storage is proposed to improve average access time and replica utilization. The proposed scheme has been implemented based on CloudSim and performance evaluation has been done. Simulation results have shown that it is both feasible and effective with better performance than certain existent scheme. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.
