Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) has been proved to be a standard solution to most cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The surgical simulator provides the trainees a new vehicle to learn this skill much more conveniently and effectively. The blood vessel model is at the core of the virtual environment. In this paper, a robust and semi-automatic approach to segment the abdominal aorta from the computed tomography angiography (CTA) is developed. The proposed approach employs the geodesic active contours method as the main component. The edge potential map is generated by applying nonlinear mapping function. The initial contours are evolved by applyging the fast marching method. The surface information representing the vessel is extracted by the marching cubes method. This approach has been proved successful for the construction of 3-D surface model of the aorta based on the CTA series.

With increased market competition and advances in modern manufacturing technologies, requirements on customer orders and manufacturing conditions have become more diversified. This paper addresses a dynamic production planning problem for a steel plate fabrication plant with practical flexibility of both customers and manufacturing, such as steel slab-plate matching rules, plate substitution options, production line assignment. These flexibility factors can provide the decision maker with auxiliary options to satisfy customer requirements through realizable production planning. The steel slab-plate matching rules combined with plate substitution options are visualized by a networked graph and formulated by a set based design. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model that incorporates various manufacturing constraints and the flexibility is proposed to simultaneously optimize production strategy and provide practical managerial information such as backlogging/inventory level, capacity availability, and also steel slab demand. Linearization methods are used to transform the original MINLP problem into mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model resulting in easier and quicker solutions. A real industrial steel plate fabrication plant is used as a case and illustrates the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.

Crustal movement simulation takes the very essential effect in the research on water cycle and related land surface processes. In this paper, a crustal movement simulation system (CMSS) is presented. The system enables researchers investigate the effects of crustal movement on rivers and lakes in the laboratory environment. The CMSS proposed consists of twelve sets of parallel mechanism supported by four serial chains with three degree of freedoms (DOFs). The kinematics analysis of the parallel mechanism with four serial chains is provided. To solve the coplanar problem of four screws, a control method based on linear interpolation with parabola transition is introduced. Surface fitting algorithm based on geometric relations is used to simulate the land surface. Experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the system and the methods proposed.

In this paper, a linear unbiased minimum-variance filtering problem is considered for a class of systems with randomly multi-step sensor delays. A new mathematical model is established for the multi-step sensor delays. Different from the augmented method for dealing with delayed systems, a linear unbiased minimum-variance filter design method is proposed without augmenting the state vector, which effectively reduces the filter dimensions. A recursive algorithm for calculating the filter gain matrix is developed. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Face perception is one of the most important tasks in robot vision especially for service robots. The spatially enhanced local binary pattern histogram (eLBPH) method has been proved to be effective for facial image representation and analysis, but the expression factor isn't considered and the region-dividing method is rough. In this paper, inspired by the biological mechanism of human memory and face perception, we improve the eLBPH and propose a new method, expressionspecific weighted local binary pattern histogram (EWLBPH). Accordingly, the new method introduces a semantic division process and an extended modulation process into the classical eLBPH. What's more, for the facial expression recognition, we propose a novel method which utilizes the convolutional deep belief network (CDBN) to extract discriminative information and represent them effectively. Finally, through experiments we verify the rationality and effectiveness of the improvement and two psychophysical findings.

Real-time pose estimation and reliable motion control are two crucial tasks for a quadrotor UAV. In order to obtain accurate and robust pose estimation, an estimation algorithm based on Cubature Kalman Filter (CKF) is adopted in this paper. Considering the limitation of a quadrotor working in GPS-denied indoor environments, a sparse optical flow algorithm is utilized in our work to estimate the quadrotor's velocity and position. After acquiring the quadrotor's real-time pose information, the pose and position control of a micro quadrotor are accomplished by using PID and PI-D controller. A series of experiments are performed on a home-made quadrotor UAV named Smart-QR. The experimental results show the validity and practicability of the proposed approach.
