Cosmic rays are high-energy charged particles that come from outer space. They play an important role in the evolution of our Galaxy. Gamma-ray emission produced by cosmic rays is a direct probe of cosmic rays and their accelerators. As a key sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), KM2A is the most sensitive gamma-ray detector at ultra-high energy (UHE, >100 TeV) band. Here, we report four of the brightest UHE sources measured by LHAASO, LHAASO J1825-1326, LHAASO J1908+0621, LHAASO J2108+5157 and LHAASO J2226+6057. The morphology and spectral energy distribution of these sources are studied respectively using the KM2A data collected from December 2019 to December 2020. The origin of the UHE gamma-ray emission is also discussed taking into account the implications from multi-wavelength observations. © Copyright owned by the author(s).

In this study, We present a comprehensive analysis of an unidentified point-like ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray source, designated as 1LHAASO J1740+0948u, situated in the vicinity of the middle-aged pulsar PSR J1740+1000. The detection significance reaches 17.1σ (9.4σ) above 25 TeV (100 TeV).The energy spectrum of the source extends up to 300 TeV and is well-described by a log-parabola function with N0 = (1.93 ±0.23) ×10−16 TeV−1 cm−2 s−1, α = 2.14±0.27, and β = 1.20±0.41 at E0 = 30 TeV. The associated pulsar, PSR J1740+1000, resides at a high Galactic latitude and powers a bow-shock pulsar wind nebula (BSPWN) with an extended X-ray tail. The best-fit position of the gamma-ray source appears to be shifted by 0.2◦ with respect to the pulsar position. As the (i) currently identified pulsar halos do not demonstrate such offsets, and (ii) centroid of the gamma-ray emission is approximately located at the extension of the X-ray tail, we speculate that the UHE γ-ray emission may originate from re-accelerated electron/positron pairs that are advected away in the bow-shock tail. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

In the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), the main physics objective of the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is to survey the gamma-ray sky continuously in the energy range from 100 GeV to PeV. The Water Cherenkov detector array, covering an area of about 78,000 m2 area, is constituted by 3120 detector units divided into 3 separate arrays. In the second and third array are installed 2220 20" PMTs instead of the 8 PMT used in the first 150 × 150m2 array. This type of PMT has large sensitive area, high quantum efficiency (QE), and large peak-to-valley (P/V) ratio for single photoelectron detection. The one square kilometer array (KM2A), a sub-array of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) experiment, consists of 5195 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs), has been built over three-quarters scale. Its main scientific goal is to search gamma-ray sources at energies above 100 TeV. Offline calibration method has been used to calibrate thousands of EDs to guarantee the key performances of the array such as angular resolution and pointing accuracy within 0.1° during long-term operation. The experimental results of the 3/4 array show that this method can be used to determine the detector time offset with an accuracy of 0.5 ns and the particle number density with an accuracy of a few percent. Furthermore, we monitor the calibration parameters during the array operation and update the calibration results regularly to ensure the data quality of the detector. © 2022 Sissa Medialab Srl. Identification of proton and gamma plays an essential role in ultra-high energy gamma-ray astronomy with LHAASO-KM2A. In this work, two neural networks (deep neural networks (DNN) and graph neural networks (GNN)) are applied to distinguish proton and gamma in the LHAASOKM2A simulation data. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are used to evaluate the quality of the model. The core-collapse supernova remnant (SNR) Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is one of the brightest galactic radio sources with an angular radius of ∼ 2.5′. Although no extension of this source has been detected in the γ-ray band, using more than 1000 days of LHAASO data above ∼ 0.8 TeV, we find that its spectrum is significantly softer than those obtained with Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and its flux near ∼ 1 TeV is about two times higher. In combination with analyses of more than 16 years of Fermi-LAT data covering 0.1 GeV − 1 TeV, we find that the spectrum above 30 GeV deviates significantly from a single power-law, and is best described by a smoothly broken power-law with a spectral index of 1.90 ± 0.15stat (3.41 ± 0.19stat) below (above) a break energy of 0.63 ± 0.21stat TeV. Given differences in the angular resolution of LHAASO-WCDA and IACTs, TeV γray emission detected with LHAASO may have a significant contribution from regions surrounding the SNR illuminated by particles accelerated earlier, which, however, are treated as background by IACTs. The KM2A is a major ground-based array for the researches on cosmic rays around the "knee" region and the ultra high energy gamma-ray astronomy, which depends heavily on its performance. The half array of the KM2A has been operated from December 27, 2019 to November 30, 2020. The cosmic ray Moon shadow, which moves between ±25◦ of declination and is observed with significance up to -25 standard deviation each month, is used as an unique and powerful source to test the array’s performance. Through the observation of the characteristics of the Moon shadow, including the position displacement, shape, deficit, and their variation with the time and energy, we test the pointing error, angular resolution, long-term stability of the KM2A and the absolute energy scale of the primary cosmic-ray particles. In particular, the pointing errors for showers from different declinations are discussed in this work. © Copyright owned by the author(s).

On October 9, 2022, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the observation of the very early TeV afterglow of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A, recording the highest photon statistics in the TeV band ever obtained from a Gamma-ray burst. We use this unique observation to place stringent constraints on an energy dependence of the speed of light in vacuum, a manifestation of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) predicted by some quantum gravity (QG) theories. Our results show that the 95% confidence level lower limits on the QG energy scales are EQG,1 > 10 times of the Planck energy EPl for the linear, and EQG,2 > 6 × 10−8EPl for the quadratic LIV effects, respectively. Our limits on the quadratic LIV case improve previous best bounds by factors of 5–7. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charge or at least three leptons without any charge requirement. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹ of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Multiple signal regions are defined, targeting several SUSY simplified models yielding the desired final states. A single control region is used to constrain the normalisation of the WZ + jets background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, yielding exclusion limits surpassing those from previous searches. In models considering gluino (squark) pair production, gluino (squark) masses up to 2.2 (1.7) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. © The Author(s) 2024.

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter established by observations with ground-based gamma-ray detectors. Here we report the long-term monitoring of M87 from 2021 to 2024 with Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). M87 has been detected by LHAASO with a statistical significance ∼ 9σ. The observed energy spectrum extends to 20 TeV, with a possible hardening at ∼ 20 TeV and then a clear softening at higher energies. Assuming that the intrinsic spectrum is described by a single power law up to 20 TeV, a tight upper bound on the extragalactic background light (EBL) intensity is obtained. A strong VHE flare lasting eight days, with the rise time of τrrise = 1.05 ± 0.49 days and decay time of τddecay = 2.17 ± 0.58 days, was found in early 2022. A possible GeV flare is seen also in the Fermi-LAT data during the VHE flare period. The variability time as short as one day seen in the LHAASO data suggests a compact emission region with a size of ∼ 3 × 1015δ cm (δ being the Doppler factor of the emitting region), corresponding to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central supermassive black hole in M87. The continuous monitoring of the source reveals a duty cycle of ∼ 1% for VHE flares with a flux above 10−11 erg cm−2 s−1 Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
