License plate recognition (LPR) remains a challenging task in face of some difficulties such as image deformation and multi-line character distribution. Text rectification that is crucial to eliminate the effects of image deformation has attracted increasing attentions in scene text recognition. However, current text rectification methods are not designed specifically for LPR, which did not take the features of plate deformation into account. Considering the fact that a license plate (LP) can only generate perspective distortion in the image due to its rigid feature, in this paper we propose a novel perspective rectification network (PRN) to automatically estimate the perspective transformation and rectify the distorted LP accordingly. For recognition, we propose a location-aware 2D attention based recognition network that is capable of recognizing both single-line and double-line plates with perspective deformation. The rectification network and recognition network are connected for end-to-end training. Experiments on common datasets show that the proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Combined Trojan Y Chromosome strategy and sterile insect technique to eliminate mosquitoes: Modelling and analysis

Sterile insect technique has been successfully applied in the control of agricultural pests, however, it has a limited ability to control mosquitoes. A promising alternative approach is Trojan Y Chromosome strategy, which works by manipulating the sex ratio of a population through the introduction of feminized Y Y supermales that guarantee male offspring. A combined Trojan Y chromosome strategy and sterile insect technique (TYC-SIT) strategy is modeled with ordinary differential equations that allow the kinetics of the female population decline of mosquitoes to be evaluated under identical modeling conditions. The dynamical analysis leads to results on both local and global stabilities of this combined model. Optimal control analysis is also implemented to investigate the optimal mechanisms for extinction of mosquitoes. In particular, the numerical results affirm that the combined TYC-SIT enables near elimination of mosquitoes. The conclusion has great significance for pest controls. © 2021, CC BY.

In this paper, the radar clutter reconstruction model based on singularity power spectrum (SPS) and instantaneous singularity exponent (ISE) is proposed. The proposed ISE-SPS model consists of power measure channel and dimension measure channel. The multi-scale wavelet coefficients are estimated based on the coupling of the two channels to reconstruct the radar sea clutter. Experiment based on the Ice Multi-parameter Imaging X-Band (IPIX) indicates that the proposed model behaves better than the N-partitioned random multiplicative model (NRMM), with about 32% increment in terms of correlation coefficient and normalized MSE of MFS and SPS. © 2020 IEEE.

We propose a new task named Audio-driven Performance Video Generation (APVG), which aims to synthesize the video of a person playing a certain instrument guided by a given music audio clip. It is a challenging task to generate the high-dimensional temporal consistent videos from low-dimensional audio modality. In this paper, we propose a multi-staged framework to generate realistic and synchronized performance video from given music. Firstly, we provide both global appearance and local spatial information by generating the coarse videos and keypoints of body and hands from a given music respectively. Then, we propose to transform the generated keypoints to heatmap via a differentiable space transformer, since the heatmap provides more spatial information but is harder to generate directly from audio. Finally, we propose a Structured Temporal UNet (STU) to extract both intra-frame structured information and interframe temporal consistency. They are obtained via graph-based structure module, and CNN-GRU based high-level temporal module respectively for final video generation. Comprehensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

The main content of the research in this paper is the estimation of depth and pose based on monocular vision and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The usual depth estimation network and pose estimation network require depth ground truth or pose ground truth as a supervised signal for training, while the depth ground truth and pose ground truth are hard to obtain, and monocular vision based depth estimation cannot predict absolute depth. In this paper, with the help of IMU, which is inexpensive and widely used, we can obtain angular velocity and acceleration information. Two new supervision signals are proposed and the calculation expressions are given. Among them, the model trained with acceleration constraint shows a good ability to estimate the absolute depth during the test. It can be considered that the model can estimate the absolute depth. We also derive the method of estimating the scale factor during the test from the acceleration constraint, and also achieve good results as the acceleration constraint does. In addition, this paper also studies the method of using IMU information as pose network input and as selecting conditions. Moreover, it analyzes and discusses the experimental results. At the same time, we also evaluate the effect of the pose estimation of the relevant models. This article starts by reviewing the achievements and deficiencies of the work in this field, combines the use of IMU, puts forward three new methods such as a new loss function, and conducts a test analysis and discussion of relevant indicators on the KITTI data set.

Recently, the state space model Mamba has demonstrated efficient long-sequence modeling capabilities, particularly for addressing long-sequence visual tasks in 3D medical imaging. However, existing generative self-supervised learning methods have not yet fully unleashed Mamba’s potential for handling long-range dependencies because they overlook the inherent causal properties of state space sequences in masked modeling. To address this challenge, we propose a general-purpose pre-training framework called MambaMIM, a masked image modeling method based on a novel TOKen-Interpolation strategy (TOKI) for the selective structure state space sequence, which learns causal relationships of state space within the masked sequence. Further, MambaMIM introduces a bottom-up 3D hybrid masking strategy to maintain a masking consistency across different architectures and can be used on any single or hybrid Mamba architecture to enhance its multi-scale and long-range representation capability. We pre-train MambaMIM on a large-scale dataset of 6.8K CT scans and evaluate its performance across eight public medical segmentation benchmarks. Extensive downstream experiments reveal the feasibility and advancement of using Mamba for medical image pre-training. In particular, when we apply the MambaMIM to a customized architecture that hybridizes MedNeXt and Vision Mamba, we consistently obtain the state-of-the-art segmentation performance. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has become a mainstream technology for solving spatial structures of biomacromolecules, while the processing of cryo-EM images is a very challenging task. One of the great challenges is the high noise in the images. A common method is to cluster the images with close projecting angles to get mean images, which are used for 3D reconstruction. However, due to the extremely low signal-to-noise-ratio, common clustering methods often fail to obtain high-quality mean images, leading to poorly reconstructed structures. In this study, we present a new unsupervised learning framework, called NiuEM, to discriminate images captured from different angles and yield cluster-mean images. NiuEM first generates pseudo-labels and then exploits both contrastive loss and cross-entropy loss for training convolutional layers to learn feature representations. Moreover, the pseudo-labels are updated iteratively to enhance the reliability of labels. We assess the performance of NiuEM on four data sets via both visualized and quantitative experiments. Especially, two kinds of metrics are adopted to measure the performance, regarding the clustering quality and the resolution of reconstructed 3D models, respectively. The experimental results show that NiuEM achieves very competitive clustering accuracy in the comparison with the state-of-the-art image clustering methods. Moreover, the cluster mean images yielded by NiuEM lead to better initial 3D models compared with the mainstream reconstruction tools. © 2020 IEEE.

Advances in neuroscience have suggested that addiction is not only an ongoing dynamic transaction between the person, their behavior, and the environment, but a disturbance of neurotransmitters in neurons involved in reward, memory, and cognitive control. Although the neural mechanism of addiction is complex and heterogeneous, previous addiction recovery and treatment studies have proven that addiction is amenable to treatment and recovery. At present, addiction treatment faces great challenges as well as many opportunities. The field of biomedical engineering is and will be at the forefront of these accelerating disciplines based on advances in imaging, genomics, systems medicine, molecular and cellular engineering, and other biomedical sciences. Thus, we propose several perspectives to accelerate the development of advanced and scientific approaches for addiction treatment: early prevention is better than cure and addiction treatment should focus on individualized regulation, whole-body interaction and the translation of effective animal models to human. © 2023 The Authors

Given a speech clip and facial image, the goal of talking face generation is to synthesize a talking face video with accurate mouth synchronization and natural face motion. Recent progress has proven the effectiveness of the landmarks as the intermediate information during talking face generation. However, the large gap between audio and visual modalities makes the prediction of landmarks challenging and limits generation ability. This paper proposes a semantic and temporal synchronous landmark learning method for talking face generation. First, we propose to introduce a word detector to enforce richer semantic information. Then, we propose to preserve the temporal synchronization and consistency between landmarks and audio via the proposed temporal residual loss. Lastly, we employ a U-Net generation network with adaptive reconstruction loss to generate facial images for the predicted landmarks. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets LRW and GRID demonstrate the effectiveness of our model compared to the state-of-the-art methods of talking face generation.

Purpose. To assess the recognition pattern of dynamic action by visual prosthesis' wearers. Methods. Twenty volunteers (classified by gender and experience) were recruited to carried out action recognition test in simulated prosthetic vision. Twenty-three common dynamic actions video clips usually see in daily life were selected and formed the experimental action set which was divided into three parts including combined actions, simple actions and difficult actions in turn. The action animations made by 3D Studio Max were recorded by Banicam to convert to MP4 video format and processed to phosphene video clips by MATLAB in different resolutions (16 × 16, 24 × 24, 32 × 32, 48 × 48, 64 × 64, 128 × 128). Result. Comparing the recognition results, male group and female group had no significant difference. 48 × 48 resolution was the considerable latent capacity which subjects had stable performance. After a period of study, the performance of prosthesis wearers could be improved significantly.
