Relationship between pulmonary nodule malignancy and surrounding pleurae, airways and vessels: a quantitative study using the public LIDC-IDRI dataset

Objectives: To investigate whether the pleurae, airways and vessels surrounding a nodule on non-contrast computed tomography (CT) can discriminate benign and malignant pulmonary nodules. Materials and Methods: The LIDC-IDRI dataset, one of the largest publicly available CT database, was exploited for study. A total of 1556 nodules from 694 patients were involved in statistical analysis, where nodules with average scorings 3 were respectively denoted as benign and malignant. Besides, 339 nodules from 113 patients with diagnosis ground-truth were independently evaluated. Computer algorithms were developed to segment pulmonary structures and quantify the distances to pleural surface, airways and vessels, as well as the counting number and normalized volume of airways and vessels near a nodule. Odds ratio (OR) and Chi-square (χ2) testing were performed to assess the correlation between features of surrounding structures and nodule malignancy. A non-parametric receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted in logistic regression to evaluate discrimination ability of each structure. Results: For the benign and malignant groups, the average distances from nodules to pleural surface, airways and vessels are respectively (6.56, 5.19), (37.08, 26.43) and (1.42, 1.07) mm. The correlation between nodules and the counting number of airways and vessels that contact or project towards nodules are respectively (OR=22.96, χ2=105.04) and (OR=7.06, χ2=290.11). The correlation between nodules and the volume of airways and vessels are (OR=9.19, χ2=159.02) and (OR=2.29, χ2=55.89). The areas-under-curves (AUCs) for pleurae, airways and vessels are respectively 0.5202, 0.6943 and 0.6529. Conclusion: Our results show that malignant nodules are often surrounded by more pulmonary structures compared with benign ones, suggesting that features of these structures could be viewed as lung cancer biomarkers. © 2021, CC BY.

Sparse canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is a useful statistical tool to detect latent information with sparse structures. However, sparse CCA works only for two datasets, i.e., there are only two views or two distinct objects. To overcome this limitation, in this paper, we propose a sparse generalized canonical correlation analysis (GCCA), which could detect the latent relations of multiview data with sparse structures. Moreover, the introduced sparsity could be considered as Laplace prior on the canonical variates. Specifically, we convert the GCCA into a linear system of equations and impose 1 minimization penalty for sparsity pursuit. This results in a nonconvex problem on Stiefel manifold, which is difficult to solve. Motivated by Boyd’s consensus problem, an algorithm based on distributed alternating iteration approach is developed and theoretical consistency analysis is investigated elaborately under mild conditions. σ 54 promoters are responsible for transcriptional carbon and nitrogen in prokaryotes. However, it is costly and difficult by experimental identification of them, especially in the postgenomic era with avalanche of sequencing data. Thus, it is imperative to develop efficiently and rapidly computational algorithms to identify the σ 54 promoters. In this study, a novel predictor named SVM-Adaboost was developed to predict σ 54 promoters from sequences alone, it used the Adaboost algorithm as the core, and support vector machine (SVM) as weak base predictors. SVM-Adaboost integrated SVM predictors to construct a more powerful and robust ensemble predictor. In SVM-Adaboost, we used pseudo k-tuple nucleotide composition method to encode DNA sequences, and then a feature selection method was used to further select the discriminate features for subsequent classification. We strictly evaluate the SVM-Adaboost on a constructed gold-standard σ 54 promoter dataset using ten-fold cross validation 100 times, and achieved an average accuracy of 96.06%.

Oracle character is one kind of the earliest hieroglyphics, which can be dated back to Shang Dynasty in China. Oracle character recognition is important for modern archaeology, ancient text understanding, and historical chronology, etc. To overcome the limitation and class imbalance of training data in oracle character recognition, we propose a classification method based on deep metric learning. We use a convolutional neural network (CNN) to map the character images to an Euclidean space where the distance between different samples can measure their similarities such that classification can be performed by the Nearest Neighbor (NN) rule. Because new categories are still being discovered in reality, our model enables the rejection of unseen categories and the configuration of new categories. To accelerate NN classification, we also propose a prototype pruning method with little loss of accuracy. The proposed method exceeds the state of the art on the public dataset Oracle-20K and outperforms CNN with softmax layer on a new dataset Oracle-AYNU. © 2019 IEEE.

Driver's physical and mental states are very important factors affecting the driving states. Traffic accidents are occurred by accompanying abnormal physiological parameters. So how to monitor automatically driver's physiological parameters is an important problem. A real-time driver's physiological parameters monitoring method based on microarray camera is proposed in this paper. Firstly, we use a microarray camera to acquire videos in real time without contact. Secondly, the videos are registered and fused into a high quality video. Thirdly, deep learning framework is used to capture driver's facial data quickly. Then based on the principle of imaging photoplethysmography (IPPG) algorithm, physiological parameters such as heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ) are monitored in real time. Results of expression analysis can further support the physiological parameters monitoring results. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper can monitor the physiological parameters of drivers in real time and accurately, and it is hopeful to play an active role in improving traffic safety.

Incremental transformer with deliberation decoder for document grounded conversations

Document Grounded Conversations is a task to generate dialogue responses when chatting about the content of a given document. Obviously, document knowledge plays a critical role in Document Grounded Conversations, while existing dialogue models do not exploit this kind of knowledge effectively enough. In this paper, we propose a novel Transformerbased architecture for multi-turn document grounded conversations. In particular, we devise an Incremental Transformer to encode multi-turn utterances along with knowledge in related documents. Motivated by the human cognitive process, we design a two-pass decoder (Deliberation Decoder) to improve context coherence and knowledge correctness. Our empirical study on a real-world Document Grounded Dataset proves that responses generated by our model significantly outperform competitive baselines on both context coherence and knowledge relevance. Research and development of electroencephalogram (EEG) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have advanced rapidly, partly due to deeper understanding of the brain and wide adoption of sophisticated machine learning approaches for decoding the EEG signals. However, recent studies have shown that machine learning algorithms are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. This article proposes to use narrow period pulse for poisoning attack of EEG-based BCIs, which is implementable in practice and has never been considered before. One can create dangerous backdoors in the machine learning model by injecting poisoning samples into the training set. Test samples with the backdoor key will then be classified into the target class specified by the attacker. What most distinguishes our approach from previous ones is that the backdoor key does not need to be synchronized with the EEG trials, making it very easy to implement. The effectiveness and robustness of the backdoor attack approach is demonstrated, highlighting a critical security concern for EEG-based BCIs and calling for urgent attention to address it. In practice, there often exist some occasions where video surveillance can only be realized by using rechargeable batteries due to the high cost of power supply. In order to extend the battery life, images can only be taken at a certain interval. Obviously, image difference is an important method to obtain various changes in this case. Among these changes, foreign invasion is one of the focuses. However, due to bolt shedding, abnormal weather and other factors, the camera may have abnormal movement which may seriously affect the detection effect of image difference method. Therefore, it is an urgent issue to find an effective way to detect the abnormal movement of camera and improve the detection accuracy of foreign invasion. Considering the characteristics of this kind of image sequences, we propose an effective algorithm to detect the camera abnormal movement and foreign object invasion based on a cumulative edge distribution probability model. Since sky region is relatively simple, we only discuss changes in sky region to detect camera abnormal movement. Our algorithm has 6 basic steps: firstly, segment the sky region;secondly, extract the edge information of the current image and the preceding adjacent image in the image sequence;thirdly, determine if the edge information of two adjacent images coincide. If consistent, then go to the next step, otherwise, it indicates that the camera has abnormal movement, then alarm;fourthly, calculate the cumulative edge probability distribution model in the sky region by using the historical image sequence;fifthly, by using adaptive Parzen window, determine if foreign object invasion exists by comparing the probability model of cumulative edge distribution with edge distribution of the current image;sixthly, update the cumulative edge distribution probability model in sky region. The Commensal Radio Astronomy Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) Survey (CRAFTS) utilizes the novel drift-scan commensal survey mode of FAST and can generate billions of pulsar candidate signals. The human experts are not likely to thoroughly examine these signals, and various machine sorting methods are used to aid the classification of the FAST candidates. In this study, we propose a new ensemble classification system for pulsar candidates. This system denotes the further development of the pulsar image-based classification system (PICS), which was used in the Arecibo Telescope pulsar survey, and has been retrained and customized for the FAST drift-scan survey. In this study, we designed a residual network model comprising 15 layers to replace the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in PICS. The results of this study demonstrate that the new model can sort >96% of real pulsars to belong the top 1% of all candidates and classify > 1.6 million candidates per day using a dual-GPU and 24-core computer. This increased speed and efficiency can help to facilitate real-time or quasi-real-time processing of the pulsar-search data stream obtained from CRAFTS. In addition, we have published the labeled FAST data used in this study online, which can aid in the development of new deep learning techniques for performing pulsar searches.
