Abnormal resting-state EEG power and impaired inhibition control in young smokers

Exposure to nicotine during adolescence may cause neurophysiological changes and increase the risks of developing nicotine dependence;it can even lead to lifelong smoking. The intake of nicotine may also lead to abnormal patterns of oscillatory brain activity and inhibition control deficits. However, little is known about the specific relationship between oscillatory brain activity during the resting state and inhibition control capacity in young smokers. In the present study, we acquired resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) data from thirty-four young smokers and 39 age-matched non-smoking controls. Inhibition control performance was measured by a Go/NoGo task. Compared with non-smoking controls, we detected reduced low-frequency delta band activity in the frontal, central and posterior cortices of young smokers. Furthermore, young smokers committed more errors in response to infrequent NoGo trials. Notably, we demonstrated that delta absolute power in the frontal region was negatively correlated with NoGo errors and that alpha power in the central region was positively correlated with NoGo errors in non-smoking controls but not in young smokers. These findings may suggest that these inhibitory control processes were associated with alterations in oscillatory brain activity during the resting state. Our findings suggest that alterations of power spectra in delta bands may act as a useful biomarker of inhibitory control performance and provide a scientific basis for the diagnosis and treatment of nicotine addiction in adolescents. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

In this paper, we consider the `q−regularized kernel regression with 0 q−penalty term over a linear span of features generated by a kernel function. We study the asymptotic behavior of the algorithm under the framework of learning theory. The contribution of this paper is two-fold. First, we derive a tight bound on the `2−empirical covering numbers of the related function space involved in the error analysis. Based on this result, we obtain the convergence rates for the `1−regularized kernel regression which is the best so far. Image denoising algorithm based on noise detection

An efficient image denoising algorithm is introduced. Firstly, image pixels are classified into noisy pixels and noise-free pixels by four directional operators. Then an adaptive weighted median filter is designed to remove and restore the detected noisy pixels and keep the noise-free ones unchanged. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm preserves image details well while removing impulsive noise efficiently, and its filtering performance is significantly superior to the classical median filter and some other typical and recently developed improved median filters.

Background: Segment prostates from transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images plays an essential role in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. However, traditional segmentation methods are time-consuming and laborious. To address this issue, there is an urgent need to develop computer algorithms that can automatically segment prostates from TRUS images, which makes it become the direction and form of future development. Purpose: Automatic prostate segmentation in TRUS images has always been a challenging problem, since prostates in TRUS images have ambiguous boundaries and inhomogeneous intensity distribution. Although many prostate segmentation methods have been proposed, they still need to be improved due to the lack of sensibility to edge information. Consequently, the objective of this study is to devise a highly effective prostate segmentation method that overcomes these limitations and achieves accurate segmentation of prostates in TRUS images. Methods: A 3D edge-aware attention generative adversarial network (3D EAGAN)-based prostate segmentation method is proposed in this paper, which consists of an edge-aware segmentation network (EASNet) that performs the prostate segmentation and a discriminator network that distinguishes predicted prostates from real prostates. The proposed EASNet is composed of an encoder-decoder-based U-Net backbone network, a detail compensation module, four 3D spatial and channel attention modules, an edge enhance module, and a global feature extractor. The detail compensation module is proposed to compensate for the loss of detailed information caused by the down-sampling process of the encoder. The features of the detail compensation module are selectively enhanced by the 3D spatial and channel attention module. Furthermore, an edge enhance module is proposed to guide shallow layers in the EASNet to focus on contour and edge information in prostates. A high-order spatial filtering-symplectic finite difference time domain (SF-SFDTD) scheme with controllable stability condition is proposed to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). Firstly, the higher-order symplectic framework for the discretization of Schrödinger equation is described, and then the spatial filtering method is carried out to extend the stability of the standard SFDTD method. Finally, a numerical example is given to evaluate the correctness of the SF-SFDTD method in numerical solving Schrödinger equation.

Illumination Distillation Framework for Nighttime Person Re-Identification and A New Benchmark

Nighttime person Re-ID (person re-identification in the nighttime) is a very important and challenging task for visual surveillance but it has not been thoroughly investigated. Under the low illumination condition, the performance of person Re-ID methods usually sharply deteriorates. To address the low illumination challenge in nighttime person Re-ID, this paper proposes an Illumination Distillation Framework (IDF), which utilizes illumination enhancement and illumination distillation schemes to promote the learning of Re-ID models. Specifically, IDF consists of a master branch, an illumination enhancement branch, and an illumination distillation module. The master branch is used to extract the features from a nighttime image. The illumination enhancement branch first estimates an enhanced image from the nighttime image using a nonlinear curve mapping method and then extracts the enhanced features. However, nighttime and enhanced features usually contain data noise due to unstable lighting conditions and enhancement failures. To fully exploit the complementary benefits of nighttime and enhanced features while suppressing data noise, we propose an illumination distillation module. In particular, the illumination distillation module fuses the features from two branches through a bottleneck fusion model and then uses the fused features to guide the learning of both branches in a distillation manner. In addition, we build a real-world nighttime person Re-ID dataset, named Night600, which contains 600 identities captured from different viewpoints and nighttime illumination conditions under complex outdoor environments. Experimental results demonstrate that our IDF can achieve state-of-the-art performance on two nighttime person Re-ID datasets (i.e., Night600 and Knight ). Low-quality modalities contain not only a lot of noisy information but also some discriminative features in RGBT tracking. However, the potentials of low-quality modalities are not well explored in existing RGBT tracking algorithms. In this work, we propose a novel duality-gated mutual condition network to fully exploit the discriminative information of all modalities while suppressing the effects of data noise. In specific, we design a mutual condition module, which takes the discriminative information of a modality as the condition to guide feature learning of target appearance in another modality. Such module can effectively enhance target representations of all modalities even in the presence of low-quality modalities. To improve the quality of conditions and further reduce data noise, we propose a duality-gated mechanism and integrate it into the mutual condition module. To deal with the tracking failure caused by sudden camera motion, which often occurs in RGBT tracking, we design a resampling strategy based on optical flow. It does not increase much computational cost since we perform optical flow calculation only when the model prediction is unreliable and then execute resampling when the sudden camera motion is detected. Extensive experiments on four RGBT tracking benchmark datasets show that our method performs favorably against the state-of-the-art tracking algorithms. © 2020, CC BY.

Image matting is important in digital image processing. The pixel pair optimization-based methods are some of the image matting methods that have distinct advantages in spatially disconnected foreground. However, they cannot provide high-quality alpha mattes with limited computing resources which limits their computing resource-sensitive applications. To address this problem, we present a natural image matting method based on a surrogate model. The surrogate model for pixel pair optimization is established in the presented method to approximate pixel pair fitness, and its analytical optimal solution is used as the approximate optimal solution of pixel pair optimization problem, which saves a lot of computing resources. Experimental results show that the image matting method based on a surrogate model provides high-quality matting mattes with low computing resources and its image matting performance is competitive against state-of-the-art pixel pair optimization-based methods which require a lot of computational resources. © 2022, The Authors. In this paper, a coarse-to-fine framework for image noise removal is proposed. The bilateral filter is redefined by the manner of progressive refining to effectively eliminate noise, thus forming progressive refinement bilateral filter (PRBF), which estimates the pixel values of a noisy image through the method of progressive refinement with gradual recursion and its result retains more details, infinite close to the original image. PRBF is further integrated into the denoising model for the details processing again after denoising of the major part of the image. Our algorithm is evaluated and compared on two large standardized datasets and a number of selected images. The experimental results show that our algorithm consistently outperforms other approaches for image denoising and demonstrates the effectiveness of our framework for stereo matching.

A C64x-based multi-DSP real-time image processing system is introduced, which uses high performance TMS320C6414 DSP to process image and FPGA device to realize LINK port to transport image data with LVDS signal. Requirements of image processing performance and image data communication of image fusion are met. Based on the hardware system, a real time microkernel based distributed operating system is designed and implemented. At the end, its real-time performance is analyzed from three aspects. It's shown that the real time image processing system can reach the requirements of real time image processing.
